in reply to: My first shot at a deer #40706
As luck would have it, haha:roll:, I had to go back into the woods today to look for my camera that I lost yesterday. I found my camera, but no deer. One of the guys that was helping me look, has been hunting for a long time said that with the ground being covered with wet leaves, that it’s possible the doe laid down and that helped the blood stop flowing. I looked again for a while today and saw nothing different. I have no intention of giving up now. Looking back, I think my biggest mistake was looking at the deer as a whole instead of focusing on a spot. I would have waited for them to come a little closer, but one of the does jumped for some reason and I thought they were going to leave. I felt confident with making the shot but I didn’t pick a spot. I have prayed for the doe, hoping that she is ok instead dying and not being found. Thanks for the words of encouragement, I will keep yall posted on my future adventures.
in reply to: A Miss and A Test of Resolve #49733I’m 44 years old and this is my first year hunting. I’ve fished my entire life but I’ve never hunted. I’m using a Black Widow that was my Father’s. He passed away a few years ago and I started practicing with it when I got the bow last november. I also got a Bear 48″ super magnum. I’ve been in the woods this season and I’ve seen several deer. I haven’t had a shot yet, but it’s been great so far. I feel like my Father is with me in the woods. As was said earlier, it’s the adventure along the way, not just the end result. Keep the faith brother.
in reply to: Opening day #17557On my day, I had four Does come within twenty to twenty five yards, I made a blunder and hit my treestand with the tip of my bow. They froze and so did I. After several minutes of trying not to breathe, they calmed down and started to move. Thats when they got spooked by a noise up the hill. They took off and all I saw was tails. It was so awesome. This is my first time hunting, it was incredible having them so close.
in reply to: HOW SHARP IS SHARP ENOUGH? #62866I sat up late last night sharpening my Bear Razorheads. The hair just pops off of the arm. This will be my first season hunting deer. I’ll be using my Dad’s Black Widow recurve and his Bear Razorheads, he passed away a few years ago. I can’t wait.
in reply to: GLOVES OR TABS??? #52590I’ve only been shooting since last November and I was using one of my Dad’s old three finger gloves. I decided to get a new glove and bought a really thin one with calf fur. It didn’t take long before I had tingling and numbness in my middle finger. I picked up a new glove with the thicker leather and it made all of the difference in the world. By the way, I shoot three under.

in reply to: good old mushroom #50094Duncan,
Where in North Carolina do you live? I’m in Charlotte. Been here my whole life except for six years in the Navy. I’m glad to hear that you have done so well since the surgery.in reply to: IS EVERYONE READY FOR TURKEY HUNTING? #42531April 10th here in North Carolina. This will be my first time Turkey hunting. I can’t wait. I’ve been practicing alot in my basement. My brother in law has some property in the mountains and were going to give that a try. I’ve also been practicing with my calls. I had a dream last night about turkey hunting. It might not be a good sign because I got busted by the turkeys in my dream. Boy can they run fast.
in reply to: WHATS EVERYONE SHOOTING? #26509I have two bows that were my Fathers. Black widow 60″ 49# @ 28″. The other one is a Bear Super Magnum 48″ 48# @ 28″. I am new to this but I’m having a great time. I can’t wait to try hunting with it for Turkeys this spring. 😀
in reply to: Tell Us About Your Username #21345Since my name is Jay, I’ve been called Jaybird for as long as I can remember. I use to work with a guy that took it upon himself to assign everyone a nickname. Instead of Jaybird, he said that I worked at the speed of a Buzzard. I thought it was pretty funny. I adapted it for my username on all the forums I am on. I am new to this site. I am also new to archery. I have two bows that were my Fathers. He passed away a few years ago. The first one is a 48″ Bear Super Magnum. The second one is a 60″ Black Widow recurve. I have been having a blast shooting in the yard. I love this site and I learn something new every time I come on here.:D
