Steve, I just read an article today in one of the many deer hunting magazines:roll: and they talked about that very thing. The item they used was a common button. One guy went so far as to tape a button to his bow so it was a visual reminder. I thought it was pretty interesting.

        Dave,

One thousand post! Thank you for your passion and insite. Being new to hunting, and trying to take my first deer with my Fathers bow is a wonderful ride. My Father passed away a few years ago. Learning to shoot his bow connects me to him. My brother-in-law wants me to switch over to compounds, like he shoots, to make it “fair” to the deer. I’m having a hard time trying to get him to understand there is more to this than “just the kill”. Deer have been taken with traditional bows for a lot longer than they have with the wheels. I love the simplicity and the feel of the recurve in my hand. I guess the only way to show him is to take a deer with the recurve. Thanks again for your passion .

Summit makes a few models that are open in the front for bowhunting. The Broadhead SS, the Dagger SD and the Razor SD. I’m thinking about getting one for myself. I have an old climbing stand that has the bar in the front and it definetly gets in the way.

Yes, I’ll be hunting with the Ocala. I was really impressed with how quiet the bow was. The Magnum does have a place in hunting with it’s short size. I’ll have to spend some time shooting it, but I don’t know how I would do switching back and forth between the two bows. My aiming point is a lot different between the Ocala and the Magnum.

I do shoot three fingers under. I have only shot the Super Mag a few times. I was use to shooting the Black Widow and the Shakespeare feels the same to me. With only a month before opening day, I wouldn’t feel confident hunting with the Bear at this point. You are right, I do hunt from an elevated tree stand and the Bear would give me more room. Last night I put my Beaver silencers on and shot for a while. I could not believe how accurate I was and how quiet the bow was. I quess I got it tuned pretty well. I can’t wait to get up a tree and practice.

I spoke with Black Widows customer service today. They said that delaminations can’t be repaired. The Black Widow has been officially retired.:( My brother-in-law I believe has saved my deer season though. He let me borrow his Shakespeare Ocala X-17 60″ 50lb recurve.:) My Father picked this bow out for my sister to buy Rick, her future husband. So, my Father is still connected to this bow.:) It shoots very similar to my Black Widow. My brother-in-law still wants me to switch to compounds, but at least he is helping me out with his bow. I’ll keep you updated.

No, it’s not a take down bow. I’m going to contact Black Widow and see if they can do anything. We’ll see.

I found out today that some people have been running beagles on the property without permission. I also found out that has been happening for a while, the guys that hunt there regularly didn’t get any deer this past season. I’m pretty disappointed with this property. Oh well, I only have one more weekend available to hunt since the last weekend of the season I have plans with the family. I guess I’ll try some public game lands. Wish me luck.

I went friday to the property in Anson county for my first day in the turkey woods this season. I got into the woods about three o’clock and I checked my trail camera that had been there for two weeks. And to my surprise, no turkeys. I stuck it out that evening and for several hours the next day. Nothing seen or heard, not any tracks or any signs at all, I don’t get it. I think I’m snake bit when it comes to turkeys. I hope to find a place in North Carolina that’s fairly close to Charlotte. Oh well, we’ll keep trying.

Well, I got some bad news yesterday. The property we were going to hunt is not available this saturday after all. I thought my brother in law was joking when he called me. He said we are still on for the following weekend. I hope that is true. Besides the fact that I want to get a shot at a bird, I left a trail camera there. I hope the guys hunting there this weekend don’t kill or scare all of the birds away. It would be nice to find someplace that has birds. I tried some public game lands last year in Davie county. Way too many people hunting there, of course with shotguns. You should have seen the looks I got when they saw my recurve. I’ll let you know how it goes next weekend.

I’m sure the water would taste better than when using iodine drops. I used drops on an Outward Bound hiking trip a few years ago. Orange peels helped with the taste. Great find.

I own a pair of La Sportiva boots that I bought a few years ago for an Outward Bound trip I was going on. We carried about sixty pounds in our packs for four days. The salesman at REI suggested them for their strength and durability. They are a bit heavy, but they show no signs of wear.

This being my first season hunting, I had no idea what to expect. I saw alot of deer, a few bucks and a lot of does. I took one shot at a doe at about twenty three yards. I hit her low in the brisket, tracked the blood for about a hundred yards and then it stopped. I never found her. I took several shots at squirrels. I came really close and scared them all. I also took a shot at a coyote this saturday. It was so close, but the lower limb of my Black Widow recurve hit my stand when I took the shot. I should of raised the seat. All in all, I had an awesome time this season. I spent a lot of quality time in God’s creation and enjoyed every minute of it. I’m still after the squirrels and I’m going to try to get the two coyotes that live in the area.

Do you have to use a high speed arrow saw to cut carbon fiber arrows or could I use a band saw. I want to try to build some and I need to do it at home. Thanks.
