in reply to: Hunting season is so close #54146
Another opening weekend is in the rear view mirror. I made my best guesses with regard to treestands, put my wife in what I thought would be the most productive one, and took something else out of the way for myself. I saw squirrels, birds, and not much else. My wife, however, made a perfect 22-yard broadside shot on her first deer ever this morning — in one lung, out the other, arrow in the dirt (full disclosure: she hunts with a compound).
Hopefully my daughter gets out of her cast soon and fills her first tag as well.
in reply to: Good Friend Gets His First! #52671Very cool! Congrats to your friend.
in reply to: Hunting season is so close #50849Good luck to you this weekend. Wisconsin season opens Saturday as well. Unfortunately, my daughter is in a cast and on crutches so she’ll miss out on opening weekend. On the upside, this will be my wife’s first season as a bowhunter. Hopefully a deer or turkey offers her a shot and gets to punch her first tag. We’ll be hunting our property north of Madison while some friends of mine hunt a buddy’s land an hour west of us. With any luck, there will be a deer or six hanging on the game pole by Sunday evening.

in reply to: I'm Goin In #43586Good luck, and shoot straight.
Last year I took my daughter on her first hunt shortly after her 14th birthday. We were trying to fill a spring turkey tag or two with our bows from the confines of a popup blind. The first morning we saw several deer, a few coyotes, two black bears (a long way out of their established range) and two huge tom turkeys beyond her bow range but well within mine. She never drew, and I never nocked an arrow. She still smiles when she talks about that weekend, and actually gave a speech in school about it last week (got an A+ on it too).
That fall was her first deer season. Opening morning she had two or three does within bow range, but a touch before first legal light. She never even took her bow off the hook; she knew to take the shot would be illegal.
This spring we again hunted turkeys with our bows and had nothing but a hen in front of the blind to show for it. Regardless, we both had a great time, even though our unfilled 2012 spring turkey tags now join our unfilled ones from 2011. As soon as she’s out of her leg cast and able to hunt, she will once again try to take her first animal with her bow…in the tail end of her second year as a bowhunter. And since my wife is taking up bowhunting this fall, I now have the pleasure of helping two new hunters attempt to take their first animal.
Maybe it will happen this year. Maybe it won’t. By design, there are no guarantees with fair chase hunting of free range animals. And all three of us wouldn’t have it any other way.
in reply to: Low percentage shots #38005In my opinion, you made the right decision. There’s a reason why they call them “low percentage shots.”
in reply to: A little bowfishing film. #37697Thanks for putting together another excellent video. It made me want to go shoot some carp.
in reply to: It is almost time! #33999Wisconsin deer and turkey season opens in two weeks and two days. My wife and I are heading up to our property this weekend to finalize a few things before opening day. In Illinois, our season opens October 1st. My friends and I finished hanging stands last weekend. Let the fun begin!

When you have that long of a draw length, trimming arrows isn’t much of an option. For me, finding arrow to accomidate a 32″ draw length can be tricky.
Why would he trim arrows, if they are too stiff spine already? He needs to add more weight to the points to soften the spine.
He wouldn’t. It was a general comment about one limitation to tuning when your draw length and maximum arrow length are basically the same. My apologies for any conufusion.

in reply to: traditional recurve bow sights #31457If you’re talking about the older style sights that taped or screwed onto the belly of the riser, I think E.W. Bateman still makes one. You could probably find them with a Google search. Aside from that, you should be able to find old sights cheap on eBay.
in reply to: the on going talk about bareshaft tuning #30432Your nock could be sliding down the serving upon release, which can result in what you’re seeing — arrow bouncing off the shelf creating in an inability to tune out nock high flight. Try adding a second nock locator a little less than 1/8″ below your arrow nock and see if you can tune it level.
in reply to: Effective range based on accuracy #27112Over the years I’ve developed a rather simple way to determine my maximum range. During several shooting sessions I see how far away I can keep all my arrows in a target the size of the heart/lung area of the species I’m hunting, then cut that distance by a third. Under the best of circumstances, that is as far as I will shoot. Within that distance, I use Don’s Justice Stewart litmus test.
in reply to: What are your plans? #25332This year will be my wife’s first bowhunting season, and my daughter’s second. My top priority is helping each of them fill a tag. Aside from that, I’ll be hunting our WI property, a friend’s place, and several other spots in IL and WI.
