in reply to: First Successful HBO bow build! #9878
I think you’ll find that hickory backing will make that bow last many thousands of shots. The grain in hickory is so intertwined with itself, it is in my opinion, the absolute best backing material out there for wood bows.
Outstanding looking bow. Is that hickory on the belly of the riser also?
in reply to: Trad Transport #57324Well, I for one don’t think it’s a great idea to hand deer on the hood, or on a tailgate rack either. We have enough issues with the non hunting public to overcome as it is. Besides, I don’t want road grime added to the things I need to remove when processing it.
IF I were to hunt out of a non truck again (I doubt it) it will have a small trailer behind it. If it’s only going to be on the road, one of those $300 Harbor Freight models, even a folding one. They make one that is like 4×6. You could tow that behind ANYTHING.
It would be rigged with sides and a canvas top to cover what ever it was I had killed.
Personally, I’d rather have a truck. I have more than enough needs for one anyway.

Pretty cool idea.

Thats only because when you are like me, you don’t have ANY answers, so all the questions seem smart:D
in reply to: Gotta remember to watch my back #24510Welll took the recurve out this AM and saw a big doe (not legal here) but no bucks. No kitties either!
in reply to: Gotta remember to watch my back #23289The 4 legged kind is ALL I want to consider 😯 At least I can understand the mind of the 4 legged ones. 😀 Besides I have no interest in the others. This August we will celebrate our 40th anniversary and am happy to have the one I’ve got.
in reply to: Gotta remember to watch my back #23143Yea it’s even making local news, they are being spotted a LOT more than many years. I knew this day was coming when they banned hunting them, but those that voted that into law will NEVER see one, nor understand the threat they can be.
in reply to: Gotta remember to watch my back #22173Ha, true. Just as an example, just a few minutes ago, the dog was growling, so I too the big flashlight out to have a look see. My cat was out there and here eyes were almost touching in the light. The lions eyes were easily 3-4 times wider.
Doubt had me wondering about bobcat, but no way. Those eyes wee far apart. Two other neighbors have seen it walking around near their places. We are all within 3/4 mile of each other.
in reply to: Gotta remember to watch my back #21960Yea, I’m gonna be extra diligent at night, to make sure he (it) isn’t bothering the dog and cat. Our cat is a barn cat, and the dog sleeps in the garage (allergies) but we usually don’t put the dog in till just before we go to bed.
Interesting to hear other stories of their “boldness”. Kinda scary.
in reply to: Riser shelf design question #18580Yea I think after this season, this bow gets a remodel. I need to build a 1″ belt sander to accomplish this. Been wanting one anyway. The 1″ belt will give me more finite control.
in reply to: Splinter on recurve. Back it? #14972Great, let us know how it turns out.
in reply to: Riser shelf design question #14953I think I know of whom you talk, seems he had a tour and tuning video as well.
in reply to: Maybe it was a sign #14420So far the fingers are holding up pretty well. I have switched to a 3 finger under, and just a very slight cant, and it has made a HUGE difference in my group consistency. I have for decades shot cross dominant (left handed, right eye dominant) but will most likely make the switch after this season.
I will hopefully build a bow from an old wheel bow riser, and make it so I can switch limbs to work my right side strength up.
But with my new method I have been getting 4-6″ groups, mostly, at 25yds. NEVER did that well before.
I say mostly because occasionally I will have the goofball flier, but most of the time, even those would be in a kill zone. Assuming my target animal stays still.
Odd thing is, I have tried 3 under before, but I think I was canting the bow too much. If I were shooting RH it might not be as much an issue, but with the non dominant eye over the arrow too much cant starts stringing arrows left and right.
One reason it has sorta come to a head this season, is I have a slow developing cataract in the left eye, keeping it from being as sharp as the right. That’s why I will most likely switch to RH after this season. Not afraid of getting older, but some parts of it are not good.
in reply to: Splinter on recurve. Back it? #14392I can’t really tell from the picture, but is it sticking up away from the limb?
If so, I would use a slow set epoxy, fill the hole with it, but don’t go crazy with extra, and place clear plastic wrap over it, then apply a small piece of wood over the plastic. Then use a clamp and clamp the wood to the limb. Use a small wood piece on the belly so the clamp doesn’t mar it.
Let set overnite, then remove everything and sand away the plastic until smooth. Then sand and back the limbs as you described. It won’t come loose again.
In my experience, superglue will not stand up to limb flex very well at all.
