After my shoulder injury I just haven’t been the same. I may have to lower the weight a while. I really don’t want to get rid of my Hill bow. To be honest, it’s my dream bow.

Kinda what I was afraid of. keep the bow and get another, but lower poundage. When I was in my 20’s I dislocated my shoulder, badly. I had to reset it myself because of where I was, and no help around, but basically, gripped a steady board, and rolled my body away from it. Since I was so young, it only took a day or so till I was back at it. Played baseball, and softball for years with it, but after about 10 years, it would flare up for a few days, but then go away.

Now at 59, it is starting to pinch nerves, and cause muscle knotting all across my back, and gives me headaches that it takes Vicodin to get rid of. My point, is do NOT keep pushing that shoulder. Do strengthening exercises that BALANCE the muscles. It will be a lot better for you in the long run if you do.

I LOVE shooting the bow, have shot a recurve since I was 10, and will as long as I am able, but we have to take care of the body that God gave us. You have a lot of years ahead of you, don’t screw em up.

Ok, now you have me making some !!!

You mean like a Sawzall blade? I don’t think they are quite wide enough. In CA they have to be over 1″ wide.

For your arrows, I made my own steel inserts so am not sure whats available comercially. It was pretty easy to hit your target weight, with steel inserts and a 180gr head.

I would get the heaviest insert you can (or have me modify some) and the field point that will get the total weight where you want it and start with full length arrows for bare shaft tuning.

By the way my little $15 Harbor Freight cut off saw does an amazing job with any type arrow shaft, wood, alum or carbon. Sure makes tuning at home a breeze.

If your avatar is accurate, you appear to be a young fellow, that being said, you could possibly have the strength to pull the 75lb, or the potential anyway.

I might venture to guess you are a bit overbowed, at least at present time. I say that because that is a heavy draw weight, and your age should allow you to build up to it, but I also would bet money you’re not there yet.

This is not meant to cut you in ANY way, just an observation, based on your comments. You freely admit the recurve is easier to shoot, and MUCH of our traditional accuracy depends on shooting bows within a draw weight we are able to control.

Just “pulling it back” isn’t controlling it. I hate to say it cause I am sure it wasn’t cheap, but you might have bought “too much bow”. Just my guess. The options are to keep working out to build up to it, and then try to tune arrows to it, or sell it. Trying to tune arrows to a bow, when your form is way off, will not work.

Great job. I can’t connect yet, and I am hunting with a rifle! I have 2 tags this season, wanting to get the first with the rifle, for the meat, and then set up with the bow for number 2.

Nice young buck, ought to be real tasty.

Tuning is a bear. I thought I had my recurve tuned and lo and behold the shafts started showing too stiff, even after adding more weight up front.

You say you have 5575 for both bows, but there is 20lb draw weight difference. You never stated what those weights were, that will help guys here help you.

May I ask why the 20lb increase? On a traditional bow that is a huge jump, and that allone cause some HUGE form problems. I suggest getting together with another trad archer, with some experience, and have him watch you shoot.

I have tried all kinds of repellents, to no avail. I finally bought s 3D camo leaf suit from Wally World, that is made from a bug netting material underneath. Hardly ever wear the pants, but the jacket is worn every time now. It has a hood, and a face cover. I cut the face cover off cause it was black, and even though it was bug free cloth, it was also just about vision free as well.

I have a mosquito head net that I wear, if they start bugging my face, but have yet to be bitten by a single one. For the most part as long as I keep my ears covered, I can leave the face mask off. My face mask is lighter in weight and a medium green, a lot easier to see through. just wear a baseball cap to keep the netting off your face.

It’s fun to watch em try to find a way in, and knowing they won’t be in my eyes or ears next. They also do not get close enough to really bother me any more now.

We have mosquitoes and those little black flies.

Are you shooting the same arrows with both bows? If so, they are probably over spined for the longbow. the “shoot around” riser requires a weaker spine.

If you ARE shooting the same arrows, try adding progressively heavier points and see if that does the trick. at least you won’t have to buy new arrows.

                      Skinner,

If you want to get some inserts for arrows like 2117’s or similar, and send them to me I can turn them down for ya, to fit the 2018’s. I have 2018’s on hand and have made my own for them from steel.

They will weigh slightly less, than new but less than 10gr difference I venture.

No charge, by the way. Just glad to help.

OK I have made up a dozen inserts, and today I made up a 300gr field point. That was because I also changed my order from 3 Rivers. I had the 170gr griz on back order, and went ahead and changed that to the 200gr, which was in stock. They should be arriving soon. Combined with the 100gr steel tapered insert, that brings me to 300gr tip weight, plus the 135gr (I think) steel inserts I made, for a total of 435gr up front on the carbon arrows. Total weight was 687gr at 31% EFOC.

I hope the Griz heads fly to same point of impact the field points do, and fly well, otherwise it’s all for naught.

Now I need to make up 4-5 more 300gr field points so I can practice, without going to get the arrow after every shot.:D At least I work off my calories that way though.:D

OK I checked today, and the aluminums are at 22% FOC and the carbons are at 31%.

And Don, I am concerned about the shooting. I have a self imposed limit of 15 yards or so. Our guides will have a rifle along in case the cat is too high or too covered up to kill with my recurve, but I would really hate for it to happen that way. What’s the average height that you’ve seen them climb to?

Time for me to start practicing those upward shots.

How the heck do you practice like that? Flu flu’s? Otherwise arrow retreival could take a long time. Remember to bend at the waist , not with just arms. G Fred said it applies either up or down.

What would you shoot AT? Pine cones, maybe?

A hunting buddy of mine took a head on shot, on a small Ca forkie. His buck ran about 30yds and fell over dead. I say it depends on how “head on” it looked to me. I suppose it would have to be more of an “angling towards” shot before I would have. A straight head on, I don’t think I would have either. With a rifle, and then a neck shot, yes not a bow.

Either way, you were uncomfortable with the shot, so you absolutely made the right choice. I will not take an iffy shot even with a rifle. I want a clean, quick, humane kill.

                                Good call.

If no more show up, at least you do not lose sleep because of the wounded deer you never found. Happens enough even with high percentage shots. No sense pressing our luck.

I went there, and that is exactly the kind of idea I was thinking. Thanks for the tip. I will surely post here if I am successful in making one.
