I have 4 on my Fred Bear Super Mag 48, and it still makes a noise like plucking a string on a base guitar.
in reply to: Spreading the Word #26614I belong to a fly tying club that has bumper stickers for members. After I had several people waiting for me in parking lots to ask about the club, I wrote the web site address on the bumper stickers. No more people waiting for me. Don’t know how many people have hit the web site because of my bumper sticker. I would GLADLY pay $10 for TRADBOW bumper sticker, just to let people know, and having the web site address wouldn’t hurt.
in reply to: I draw the line way, way before helicopters #16999I have to say that when I bought my Rav4 I got one with 2 wheel drive, because I don’t want to intrude on the serenity of the animals, fish, or people that may be using the outdoors I am using (I’ve stopped using the private land I have permission to hunt due to excessive truck (veHICular in Dixie) traffic). With that said not a day in the WMAs I hunt goes by without a couple army helicopters (the big ones) go over in formation, and perhaps a few jets (either fighters, or transports). I accept that because they have to do it somewhere.
I have never had the time, or money for fly in hunting or fishing, and I’m not so sure I would want to. I really think that a fork horn or a 5 pound bass here in Mass is a better trophy than some monster elk from out west, or a bucket mouth from down south.
Just my humble opinion…..
I’ve already caught the 5 pound bass, the fork horn is scared.
Saturday I had one of those close encounters…
Doing the whitetail 2 step, I came to a brier patch that would have stopped brier rabbit. While I was trying to figure what way to go I saw brown through a opening in the tangle. I froze and heard, glimpsed at least 2 (I think 4 deer) amble by within 20 feet (not yards feet). All I could do is stand there frozen thinking “What can I do? What can I do?” All I could do is watch brown go by, with my heart racing. Notice I said “amble” by, no snorts, no crashing thru the underbrush waving white flags, they didn’t know I was there.
No venison on the table, but I can say that:
I CAN do the whitetail two step. If they had seen me or heard me, they would have bolted.
I don’t stink. If they had smelled me…
There ARE deer there. I’ve seen scrapes, droppings, and rubs all over, but actually seeing brown trumps all of that.
I’m thinking the rest is just luck, and the more time I spend out there the more likely I am to get a shot. With that said, I’m running out of time.
Didn’t get the chance to launch an arrow, but as I made my way out of the woods that evening, I was snickering.

Thus, a windproof layer or two are always on me. I own windproof hat, jacket, gloves and pants. I wear the jacket and gloves on above freezing windy days and all 4 on below freezing days. I always wear my insulated pac boots and insulated windproof gloves below 40 degrees.
You are more inland than we are. When I was 16 we moved to Boston and found what we called “Boston cold” the mercury said 40 but it felt colder than -10 back upstate. Then difference was the wind and the DAMP. I was out in fog this morning at 40, and with all my layers I was still shivering, until the sun came out. No wind just DAMP. Penetrated all those layers and chilled me.
in reply to: Another gift of venison #51291Great hunt Alex!!!
I grew up north of you in Granville, NY. A bit colder, a bit steeper, but not much different.
Now in Central Mass. About the same geology as the Catskills. Same glacier carved valleys, same odd ball bulders left in awkward places. Was sitting next to one of those valleys (ravine) with 2/1 pitch on the sides, If you let a deer fall down one of those every bone would be broken by the time he stopped.

The traditional journey I have been embarking on has evolved. I used to be ultra techno., uber scrutinizing of every single aspect of my “trad” gear and equipment in order to reach the outer possible threshold of “deadliest, most efficient, set up”. That path pulled me right around back into the “techno hunt” that I gave up the wheels for in the first place.
After burning out a couple times in computer rooms in the 70/80s I’ve learned to keep a tight reign on things technical. Seems it takes constant vigilance.
in reply to: Where the Bucks Go!? #50878Don’t have to see and hear, Preston I know they are there, and I know they are laughing. It is a Zen thing, you will understand when you grow up. 😆
Nice post Greg, I’ll be doing the same. Just like to watch that I am hunting above the road. Not gonna drag a deer uphill. Unfortunately the best places to hunt are the places where you would need a helicopter to get the deer out.
in reply to: Where the Bucks Go!? #38100Back to the topic…
The bucks are just out of sight, peeking between the branches, laughing at you. Happens to me all of the time.
Shotgun season started here today, and there were trucks parked on the roads along the WMAs. Audrey said she saw a group of 10 hunters with shotguns and orange vests/hats. Next week they will all be back at work, and the woods will be mine again. I’ve been out 2 days every week since Oct 20, and haven’t yet seen another deer hunter (a few bird hunters, but they stay in the fields), which is amazing since I’m huinting WMAs. Seen a lot of scrapes, does, and bucks that are too far away, and always hear snickers in the distance.
