Nice Doe. Love to hear about success stories, especially when switching from a high strength steel, factory manufactured cable and wheel aiming contraption (toungue-in-cheek of course as I started with a Matthews device myself 10 years ago).:D

You will have many, many more rewarding seasons, making your own tackle, and experimenting with methods to take game. Congratulations and enjoy the woods.

Well I just purchased a GFA side quiver direct from Fred’s website. I have read the reviews on 3Rivers about the quiver, and I trust that any issues that have been a problem in the past have been corrected. I have had nothing but positive experiences from all of his products in the past. I’ll be using this with my Shrew longbow this fall. There’s less than 20 days till opening day!

Hey Wexy be careful attributing Brave to the Mouse….it’s a Pixar production through and through, with many, many trips to the highlands for research and authentic culture – not to mention a wee bit ‘o the single malt culture. It’s easy to get attached to a 20 year old lassie that’s light on the peat! You will love the film!

            Blessings from old frisco town…:D

Hey Todd, I’ve hunted White Tail Deer just South of Elk City. I hunted on the old Gilmore Ranch homestead there near the Clearwater River. The Gospel Buttes area, all of that country is rich with game. My son and I both got nice Bucks who happened to be sparring each other when we spotted them. It was extra special as it was his 18th birthday at the time. I would love to go back someday, maybe in “13 or ’14 I’ll get the opportunity.

If you go, be prepared for weather. Although central Idaho had been dry and warm for the last 4 seasons, the cold weather can roll in rapidly off the Camas Prairie. Get some great wool gear from Filson and you’ll be set! Good luck if you go there this season, I’ll be looking for some nice pics.

That’s too bad R2. I had a similar experience with a Cabelas shipment a couple of weeks ago. A great deal on Easton Arrows, but when they arrived, the inner Easton box was crushed, despite being laced into a larger Cabelas box that had “obligatory” wadded up paper on each end. Looked like it had gone through a chipper machine.

Retailers and shippers know that it’s a pain in the blankety blank to return stuff to them as a consumer. Most are great at refunding/returns, but it just lengthens the purchasing process by weeks. 😥

I’ll second the Kindle, big fan of them. I got the “non commercial” black and white version and as stated by iyagooshka it lasts a week. Hey thanks btw for the info on Saxton Pope’s tome being free! I just downloaded to my kindle.

For some reason I’ve got this interest in two things as I squirm in excitement for September…One is to learn all that I can about our Wapiti friends in the high country. I just got Dave Petersen’s “Racks” with is great fun, and I am reading Valerius Geist as well. For some low drag meanderings with a Bourbon on ice, I’ll be reading “The Big Sky” by A. B. Guthrie.

I love anything about the mountains as many of you do too…

I’ve only used 5 or 5.5 shield cut feathers on my arrows, left wing, left helical using a bitzenberger. However, many of the fine choices already listed get you on the road to what you want to use. Seems like its a personal preference for most, like Bourbon.

Dave, My Shrew is 60# @ 28. I have a Hawk recurve that is 55# @ 28 and wanted something a scosh heavier so that I could send those heavies at a quicker clip.

About arrows. I like the CE250’s for hunting, but wanted to get some 2317 camohunters for plinking. You mentioned inserts to add weight, which I have never used. Is this to get over that 650 gr. hump?

I got out today and shot my Shrew Classic Hunter in Golden Gate Park and am very pleased. I’ve got the brace set at 7 1/8″ and was sending cedar shafts spined at 75-80 with 160gr field points attached. They weighed in at 590+gr. each.

The bow is very smooth. I have no string dampeners on it yet, and intend to use some cat whiskers. But the bow shoots quiet as is.

Thanks for all of the quiver info. I like a quiver on the bow and will try one of the ones listed above.

Hey All, I am jumping into this thread as I too am in receipts of a 54″ Classic Hunter. I just built a couple of dozen arrows so I can get out shooting. I’d like to carry it with me this season, and want to know what any of you are using for a quiver. I’ve read that the Kanati Slim Jim and the Eagle’s Flight are two options. Any others with good results?

I like to carry a minimum of three two-blade arrows and its always nice to have a couple of judo’s on-hand as well for Grouse…

                            Any help is appreciated.

Beautiful pic Dave. I’m 92 days from opening day in Idaho and can’t wait to check on the herd in the Copper Basin area. I’m hoping to make a scouting trip this summer, but meanwhile I am stuck in the big City. I can appreciate what you get to enjoy every day though!

I hope to catch up with this Bull that eluded an arrow that I sent his way on September 29. This year I’ll take my new Shrew Classic Hunter….not that my marksmanship will be improved by the new bow…I’ll be a little wiser this time and see what happens!

Received my new Shrew Classic Hunter long bow yesterday, and I must say that I am thrilled with the craftsmanship, service and looks of this new bow. I ordered mine 60# @28″ draw. These bows are short, 54″ long. The reviews are excellent and I can’t wait till I get some cedar and build a couple of dozen arrows to go shooting! Thanks to Ron LeClair and his team for a bow that will last a lifetime.
