in reply to: Building recurves/longbows, where to start? #54812
Ive never attempted glass though I work on selfbows constantly. You cant go wrong with the Bowyers Bibles. If you already have the tools, as you mentioned, you can pick up a straight grained piece of lumber for 5 – 10 bucks that will make a fine hunting bow.
It is indeed a slippery slope. I made my first one years ago for no particular reason, wasnt into hunting or archery. Now, well, hunting, archery, arrow building, string making…. It happens fast!
And no glass has piqued my interest!
in reply to: KME Broadhead sharpener, Single Bevel? #54700I use a lansky for when a blade needs a lot of work. For the finer stuff/maintenance I use some of the stones I have for my straight razor. I like the looks of the KME. Appears to correct all the flaws of the lansky.
in reply to: a dozen shafts #53361Im shooting a 53# reflexed bow I made. Ive only shot them out to 15 yards. Seems like a light spine to me as well though being in so new Im not too sure of anything.
Ill download Stus calculator, that seems to be a solid program.
Thanks

wondering what bow poundage you’re using? Never used a Judo myself, always field points.
Im shooting a 53# Bamboo backed Ipe reflexed longbow I made myself. 30.5″ arrows with a 29.5″ draw. Im confident with this bow. A week before i was using field points and had no issues.
Im gonna go with the washer idea. Back when i lived in Utah we’d put wing nuts on behind a hex nut. Worked great.
in reply to: Steel Force Traditional Heads? #52959I wasnt able to find Grizzlys anywhere so I bought some 225 Tuffheads. First time with a single bevel. I glued them up today and WOW! I am extremely impressed. Took a few attempts to find the right spine but once I did it was flying as perfect as ever.
I do think they are expensive though the craftmanship warrants the price. Also, unless you are losing arrows I cant see how you’d ruin one.
Sorry Im hijacking. Great heads, worth the price.
in reply to: Blind Olympian sets new archery record #52549Phenomenal. Simply phenomenal
in reply to: Judo lessons #49998None. It was one of the ugliest experiences I’ve had. I went back this morn this morn with two hex’s and broadhead. 4 hits and 4 retrieved. 1 was one I hit last night.
Maybe at 15 yards I’m not keeping enough KE with the judo? Doubtful as the hexes are 145. Not sure what to think about it. I’m not one to just blame equipment.
I thought maybe the shots were farther than I thought so I paced a few this morn that I estimated at 15 and turned out to be more like 18 though I don’t think that’d make a difference between a harvest or not.

Looks like your brain works better than your nose! Great point! I can smell spray paint for days after I use it in my garage. Thanks!
in reply to: So I got a ghillie #48136Thanks for the spray paint tip. Here is Southern CA we dont really get seasons, its dry. My binoculars though, Leupold Rogue arent camo’d at all. Some flat spray paint sounds perfect.
The fox was pretty sweet! Really proved to me the benefits of the suit.
I decided to take last night and the next few days off to let my little area mellow out a bit. My buddy went though and, of course, saw a 3 point come in and nibble on the SAME TREE I was posted under the night before!
A damn good buddy he is. He was about 200 yards away coming up a draw and decided not to stalk it.
Oh well.
in reply to: First "self-made" bow #47330I really like hickory a lot! Does really good in the dry climes I live in. Hickory is really tough. Unless there are some major violations on the back and the tiller is decent a backing is rarely necessary.
That said, breaking your first bow is a lot like getting dumped for the first time, you’ll be wondering what else you could’ve done to save it. A light linen backing would be fine, no need to ad lots of weight. I find that thrift stores tend to have a fair selection of women’s 100% linen pants in sizes that can back a few bows for a buck or two.
Looking forward to the pics!
in reply to: So I got a ghillie #46062Thanks Doc
I took some black and white pics as soon as i opened it. I went with a “Field Grass” color option, tans, olive green and light brown to match the local area. Southern CA is mostly desert, chapparel, pinon/juniper… In other words DRY. Ill post the pics when I get a chance. This morning I was out and though no bucks came by, a fox came within 10 yards of me. Guess I dont smell that bad
in reply to: Grizzlies tuffheads and tuskers #44646I decided on the tuffheads simply because I havent seen a poor review and they are ready to ship, unlike the grizzlies.
Thanks all
in reply to: Arrow specs and charts… NEED HELP #44641I found an app in iTunes (not all that trad!) called Spine Calculator that has the same limitations you mentioned regarding tip weight. I emailed the app creator and he got back to me rather quickly. Maybe its worth contacting him?
The site is in German but its easy to find the KONTAKT link.
By the way, just ordered my first Tuffheads today!

in reply to: Grizzlies tuffheads and tuskers #42532Thanks all. I’m leaning towards the tuffheads though the cost is a bit high. I don’t take long shots and my shafts are around 23/64 so the tuffhead seems to be the way to go.
I shoot a 53 pounder as well though the blacktails here in CA don’t need a 300gr head IMO. They could use some more antlers though:lol:
in reply to: Grizzlies tuffheads and tuskers #42111Oh yeah, I shoot wood. Make my own shafts, ash, hickory and poplar usually. Sometimes with a 2 wing ipe footing. Thanks all.
