in reply to: Wood Burning Question #11611
I burn fir alder and maple mostly and clean the flue every other year. The trick I use is to burn only dry wood and once a week heat it up to about 600F. Turns the creosote into a fine ash and makes my toes toasty. Our place is only eight hundred square feet and very well insulated. Oh, I knock most of the bark off the splits and use the barky stuff for the fire pit out back.
in reply to: Public Land hunting ethics #11607I’m still killing paper products and an occasional arrow and the dream of someday actually hunting game seems like a far distant activity. Yet, even at this early stage, I know I’ll probably never willingly hunt a predator, nor run game with a dog. I have a Plott Hound pup,but he’ll not be used on bear like his ancestors were. He might do nose work and agility. That’s just me (and him) though. I would not presume to look down my nose at anyone did hunt with hounds as that too can be an art.
It is refreshing to read a thread with no vituperative nonsense in it. Thank you.
I am annoyed with a certain Eastern Washington rancher who runs his cattle on public land and squalled to the State about recently re-introduced wolves causing WF&G to spend $50K+ to kill one of the wolves and another $20K+ to kill four more from a helo with not but dubious “proof” that the wolves killed his cow. I know this is off topic, but, I join my dogs in a howl now and then cause it feels good to do so. It feels pretty good to howl with you guys too.

in reply to: Ben Pearson Palomino #61294Hi Ben,
Welcome back. If the mineral spirits don’t work 3M used to make an adhesive release I used a lot when varnishing boats. I imagine they still do. It is a great product. Just squirt it on and let it set awhile and wipe it off. Easy as duck soup!

in reply to: First Archery Deer #57505Congratulations! I’ll be trying for my first next year(I hope)
For now it’s practice, practice, practice. Great shot of your bow and mighty TuffHead.
Cheers,

in reply to: Have You Gotten Lost? #51871My internal compass has been broke since birth. Woods, hell. I can get lost in a super market. It’s going to take a stem cell break through for me as I’d forget the batteries for the gps if I had one.
On the water is a different story. Never been lost at sea…yet

in reply to: They're OK #47650They’d be rolling around on the ground laughing at the sight of me trying to stalking them. Probably come over and pat me on the head and say “come back in a few years buddy”

in reply to: Dog Question #41015Colonel Mike’s got the right stuff. You might need some help with the getting in her head part. A couple of sessions with a good trainer could make a difference. The blood work can’t be over emphasized.

in reply to: Dog Question #40944I’m in a similar situation with my young Plott. He’s a rescue dog around 1 1/2 years old and my older Kangal Dog loves him. Unfortunately, he has a very loud voice and he uses it way to much. Dutch [Plott pup] has calmed significantly in the 5 months I’ve had him. He learns everything very fast and shows promise in agility and nose work. I don’t plan to hunt over him.
I’ve only used a shock collar once a long time ago, and gave it away. I just think there has to be a better way and I think that way is operant conditioning or clicker training.
It is truly amazing what you can do with positive reinforcement. PM me and I’ll give you some contacts if you are interested. Good luck with your pup and just be glad she isn’t a Plott Hound (Grin)
Best,
Gary
in reply to: Hello Everyone #39293Pleasure to meet you Corey. Nice buck! I’m still killing this old hay bale and occasionally searching for arrows in the woods behind it. Maybe next year though…
Gary
You’ve all made some pretty persuasive arguments about specific practices and their values. All are thought provoking and I’m going to have to chew on them awhile.
There are more than a few people on this little island I live on who take a deer from their bedroom window or porch often with out regard to season. I don’t really feel any different about what they do than what I’m trying to learn to do hunting with a trad bow. It’s all just making meat.
I do get upset with guys that just rip out the back strap and leave the rest of the animal in the ditch.
I think what I’m trying to say is that it is the individuals intention that counts and how that fits in with their own sense of right and wrong, not necessarily what society has determined to be proper. That’s what I think anyway. Great topic!
Thanks,
Gary
in reply to: Homemade Broadhead Targets #37839I’ve been using an old hayladge bale for my fp’s. Broadhead’s should be here this week so I haven’t tried them yet.
It’s a round bale you see in pastures all wrapped up in white plastic. Look like huge marshmallows out in the field. Shafts get a little dirty from the fermented hay in them, but they are packed tight enough to slow my arrows down before the feathers get boogered. Shrink wrap will hold it together if you shoot one side apart and you can just scootch it around for a new area to shoot at , or tip it over and shoot at the top or bottom. you can get the smaller one’s 500-600 lbs for 30 or 40 bucks. The farmer will load them for you and you can easily tip them out of your truck where you want to shoot at them. It’s raining here a good bit and the bale doesn’t suffer a bit so far.
Best,
Gary
in reply to: Your Dream Hunt #35486My dream hunt would be to take my brother elk hunting. He went off to Colorado eleven times trying for elk with a rifle. He never saw one. He shoots an old 1956 Bear “Kodiak” out in his yard, but he hasn’t hunted with a bow since he was 15 years old. I’d just be tickled to see him get one of these big Western Washington elk or one of the rocky transplants we have here in Skagit County.
