in reply to: Tendonitis? #58864
Etter: I have had the same issue. I work out with weights and shoot my bow much like you do. My pain was made worse by bicep curls while tricep exercises did not bother it at all. I finally got a cortisone shot in my elbow and laid low using only light weights and not shooting for two weeks and it went away completely. worth asking the Doc about.
in reply to: Emergency Gear #24331Smith, I love that little knife. I also collected some pine pitch this winter and some birch bark to supplement my fire starting kit. I got reacquainted with birch this past fall hunting moose in northern Quebec. We started our fire every night with birch bark, worked like a charm even though we had rain every day.
in reply to: Two Tracks String Scallops #9706I ordered a pair to try them out since experimenting to get the best setup is part of the fun. Like Alex I recently received a new SBD string with the acrylic yarn puffs and am very impressed with how much quieter my Black Widow is.
I also ordered a pair of their wool boot liners to try out.
in reply to: Winter Rove #49533Thanks for the great pictures. What a feeling it must be to walk out your back door into such a beautiful place. The snow is still too deep to stump here but it wont be long!
Some great recommendations, I just finished The Big Sky and ordered the rest of the books in the series, should be here next week. Also picked up Sacagawea’s Nickname and Wind Sand and Stars. That should keep me busy until the others come in. It was 10 below zero with a howling wind this morning. Cant wait to get back home and fire up the woodstove and get some more reading in. This going to work every day is really getting in the way of what I want to be doing.
in reply to: Wood vs. Propane in Tent #24069When truck camping in cold weather I use a 12X12 winter tent with a stove jack and use a sheet metal wood stove. Like jg suggested I put about an inch of sand in the bottom to protect the metal and it also seems to hold heat like a rock. It really does not take much wood to heat the space even in very cold conditions and will hold coals all night when damped down. Nothing like the heat of a wood stove to dry wet cloths and gear. For lightweight spike camps I use a setup similar to Bruce only mine is by Titanium Goat.
in reply to: Looking for traditional bow-folks in Upstate NY #10726TMS: I am not aware of any traditional only groups in upstate. I am fortunate that my neighbor is also a recurve shooter so we often stump together but any time I have gone to any of the local ranges its always compound only shooters. I’ll be interested to hear if you find one.
in reply to: What ya got goin? #29231Doc; Swear to God. All good things come to an end it seems. I have bow hunted my “back yard” in complete peace for 5 years and one pork chop has come in to the valley and caused havoc.
My two closest neighbors are also bow hunters and very respectful, only take what they can eat. The “new guy” came in this year with 6 (yes 6) friends during gun season and shot every dear they saw. Disgusting. By the way, he has also lined the wood with orange tape. He literally cannot tell north from south and needs the tape to find his way!
in reply to: What ya got goin? #29211Great job Alex. I am fortunate enough to live on 40 acres of hardwoods in the Finger Lakes and have still had to remove orange flagging tape put up by people marking trails across my land. I even had a new neighbor cut a trail onto my place with a bull dozer last summer and commence riding his ATV on my trails because he felt it was his right! Needless to say that did not end well.
Dave you made me laugh with the Tom Brown Jersey Devil reference. I didn’t think you western guys knew about him! I have literally met people that will not go into the pine barrens because of the JD.
Now that our season is over its time to start stumping with the orange arrows. Also I found a place with a bunch of rabbits so I’m going to try and get my first one with a bow.
in reply to: Can I get a recommendation? #19131Merino wool is the only thing worth considering. For Elk season in Colorado I normally wear a 150 weight base layer and am comfortable all day.
I however, know absolutely nothing about a Ducks nuts! You’ll have to go to upside down land for that.
in reply to: Something to get your blood pumping.. #58944Great video! Please keep them coming.
in reply to: The Hammock Seat #28809Just ordered one. Cant wait to give it a try.
in reply to: Backcountry College – Ultralight shelters #25732Another great video Clay, keep em coming.
in reply to: Garbaging for Bears #22156Good post Dave. I have never hunted bears and one reason why is that I don’t get hunting over bait. It just does not appeal to me and certainly does not seem like hunting. We all hunt over a food source, but finding there natural food source at the specific time of year is part of the challenge. That’s hunting and of course requires some level of woodsman ship. Another favorite topic.
I have been considering it as well. The incentive package is pretty nice.
