in reply to: Didn't get my TBM #40763

Just wanted to say thank you, my replacement arrived on Thursday.

I really appreciate not only the magazine itself, but the wonderful customer service and the trad-family atmosphere that you have helped introduce me to.

      A very heartfelt THANK YOU!

Thank you very much! I didn’t want to be a pain, but wanted to make sure that it wasn’t that my mailman decided to go trad…lol. I guess he did. Thanks again!

Bruce, Thank You for sharing your experience! He may just have another student soon, depending on how much Uncle Sam gives me back this year! It’s a relatively short drive from NE Oklahoma…..

I just recently saw the episode in question and noticed 2 things, first, Mr. Barta made a comment stating that he felt that he was mistaken in his previous stand on the subject and is now convinced that it was not the “slam dunk,” easy shooting that he previously thought, and second, he still only blatantly advocated the practice for those with disabilities, in an effort to empower them and let them know that their disabilities should not prevent them from getting out there & giving it a shot. For that, I commend him. Food for thought.

As near as I can tell, the only thing different between the times of Pope & Young & Bear, etc. is the definition of an “ethical” shot. The weapons we use are just as deadly (if not more so) than they were back then. Maybe in those days it was more about personal abilities & choices than what was socially acceptable. I doubt if the prey care whether they were killed from 40 or 80 yards away.

              Apologies for hijacking the thread.

It’s funny to me that so many people look down upon Tred for taking shots at running game from 40 yards, and yet Fred Bear is always highly regarded, and wrote in his field notes that it wasn’t uncommon for him to take (and miss) shots at running game at twice the distance! I highly respect both men, myself. I know for a fact that you will miss 100% of the shots that you don’t take! As for the “canned” hunt, I just hope that I find the motivation to get out & enjoy hunting (in any fashion) if I’m ever unfortunate enough to be confined to a wheelchair. I don’t think he would EVER have hunted that way before, but I can’t blame him for doing so now. My humble opinion.

I’ve just recently heard about him & his school. Since It’s so close, I’m hoping to go for a 2 day class soon. Maybe after tax returns….

The only difference I, personally, have noticed is that with my recurve, my hand is so close to the shelf, that when I shoot RW feathers, they tend to slice into my bow hand. Switching to LW fixed the problem. My longbow doesn’t seem to have a preference, since my hand sits so much lower than the shelf. I haven’t shot my “hybrid” enough to know if there’s a difference there or not.

in reply to: Your Dream Hunt #37977

I’d hafta say that my #1 choice would also be Alaska for bear & moose. A close second would be maybe Colorado for elk, because I think that elk hunting fits my “style” of hunting. Although, at this point, ANY hunt that that ends with me putting meat on the table, that I put there with my bow, would truly be a dream come true!

Have you looked at the many options available with Cat-quivers? I started with a “mini” & decided this year to get a catquiver II. It seems to be perfect for my short excursions but if I were gonna be out for more than a day, I’d look at one of the bigger ones. There are a lot of options that make them worth a look. IMHO

I saw Mike Yancey’s booth at OJAM earlier this year & he had quite an assortment of snakeskins. I believe the name of his business is “Pine Hollow Longbows” (?) Check the pages of TBM for contact info. And of course 3 Rivers sells (both real and fake!) snakeskins for bow-backing. Hope that helps!

Another shooting form aspect (that I constantly struggle with) is “follow through”. Keep aiming until the arrow hits the target. I know when I’m not hitting where I should be (usually low) if I hold my position upon release until the arrow hits, it usually starts clearing up. Apparently, your bow arm drops when you look to see where the arrow will hit, causing the arrow to go wherever it’s pointed when you release. (?!?)

Of course all of the previous advice given is great, and given by MUCH more experienced and knowledgeable people than I. But I DO know that the plastic vanes don’t move out of the way as they travel across the shelf. It may not cause huge deflection, but it does effect accuracy. Hopefully with the previously given advice and some feathered arrows you’ll get to where you wanna be. Some more feedback, on this aspect, from the other folks, please? Anyway welcome to the site and this wonderful addiction!
