in reply to: resolution #23095Trophies are the things that bring back the fondest memories of hard work and effort used to get them. It is not the size of the trophy that matters, but the size of the smile that the memories generate. 😉
in reply to: Just a thought (on technology)… #23021For my normal walk out of the woods I only use safety glasses to keep any branches out of my eyes. The only places I have used a flash light was a night with a new moon coming off a mountain in Oregon. There was a 500 foot drop off on a flat topped nob. If you missed the corner on the trail things would go down hill very fast.
in reply to: A different kind of pay-to-play hunting #20240“But its the governments job to develop public land and make sure private venues don’t negatively affect the ecosystems.”
Corpsman89 you nailed it with that line. The government is supposed to see to it that the citizens are not ruining what lies beyond their property line. But as we all know politicians are always “For Sale”. So exceptions to the rules are written and poof there goes the neighbor hood. There are many people that despise government regulation. We need to remind them of one thing, regulation is the result of bad behavior by either individuals or business.

in reply to: What type of arrow? #10780There are others here that have more technical knowledge that I but here are a couple things to consider.Do you like wood working? When I shot wood arrows I figured 1 to 1 1/2 hours per arrow start to finish. That was self knocks, cresting, staining ,sealing & fletching. If you want a perfect arrow without a lot of fuss go carbon. The best thing about carbon shafts is they are either straight or broken. Once you find the carbon shaft that works for you all you do is buy more when you need them. Good wood shafts are harder to find than hens teeth. The guys I used to by from got bought out and there supply liquidated. I switched to carbon because I will not shoot a crappy wood arrow.
in reply to: A different kind of pay-to-play hunting #10768I WAS a member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation for 20 years. When they started they were about habitat restoration. There mission was to create a healthy environment that benefits all species. But slowly it changed to a fund raising mentality and suck up to the boys with the cash. Big donors need special treatment, opportunities to buy hard to draw tags (auction items). So they talked state agencies into giving them special tags and they split the proceeds. Then the big boys wanted less competition so they pushed for predator elimination. Can’t waste a trophy elk on a wolf you know. Aldo Leopold would be proud???
My sons snack of choice when bird hunting with his dog is cocktail wieners. The dog shares them with him.:D
in reply to: WOODSMANSHIP ON TV? #61561I work with a guy that his son got involved with a husband & wife bowhunting team( I won’t name them). His job was to take 6 pallet loads of new stands each fall to private hunting outfitters in 6 states. Starting in July he worked with the outfitters to hang stands and set trail cameras. They then monitored what was coming and when. When something peaked their interest they would fly in and hunt couple of days. If patterns changed and they felt there was time the stand setters would find new trails while they headed to another state. In reality these two are nothing more than hired guns.
in reply to: Cougars, livestock and hunting #59960So it comes down to a very basic instinct whether Man or Beast “Survival”. When you are at the point that you must eat or die what do you have to loose?

in reply to: On TeeVee hunting heroes #54340The reason us folks from the North talk so fast is because when it is -10 and our teeth are chattern the tung has to move that fast to keep from getten chewed off.
in reply to: Are The Young Hunters Out There? #54329My son has followed me around since he was 3. Now he is 26 graduated from college. But with the job market in his field he is holding down 3 jobs trying to pay for school loans and eat. He has not bought a bow tag for 3 years. I do not think he is the only one in that bind. I know he will come back to it when life gives him the room, but others never do.
