in reply to: HAPPY THANKSGIVING #61535
Thank you! Many thanks to all of you who share their knowledge, stories and photos. Happy hunting! Dwc
in reply to: Backpacks/Daypacks #60534Stx. I carry an llbean lumbar pack i bought some years ago. Upside is i can swing it around for access without taking it off. Downside it’s not as comfy as a daypack. I don’t trek so far as many guys out west so it holds pretty much all I need and it has two main compartments so i can stay fairly organized. There’s lots to choose from so enjoy the search. Best. Dwc
in reply to: Sloooow Start, but Great Evening #59388A few years ago I decided to stay off the roof. I’m not too old, but I’m too clumsy. The roof is too steep, so I hire a guy to clean the chimney. We’re scheduled for real snow tomorrow morning. Nothing like Buffalo, but maybe several inches of snow lasting on the ground for a few days. Should all be melted by the weekend back to brown woods in time for the regular season opener. This is a reminder to get the snowblower on before it’s too late! best, dwc
in reply to: Sloooow Start, but Great Evening #59365The local roads have kept us in meat a few times now that I decided to consider free, healthy meat just that. Whether it comes from a bullet or arrow or unfortunate collision it’s a gift.
I love that John Wayne quote. A friend of mine used to say that now and then at convenient moments and I never knew it was from JW.
I love the early archery season, but I have to say it doesn’t seem quite like deer season until the mercury settles down. So many years of deer season meaning those two weeks after Thanksgiving, rifle in hand, capped and vested in orange. I still look forward to this time, but now I look at the woods and wonder, where will they go to hide from the orange herd? That’s where I want to hide and wait.
All the best for you. I hope you don’t have to spend too much time on the roof.
Best, dwc
in reply to: Sloooow Start, but Great Evening #59234I ended the early season with no shot but thanks to a generous friend and somebody’s crumpled bumper i was able to try my hand at making sausage this afternoon. Easy and quick and turned out very tasty. A basic recipe of marjerum, salt, pepper and garlic. Grilled a small pappy right as it came out of the grinder and it was delicious. Hope to make more from a hinted deer this winter. Best. Dwc
in reply to: When it rains it pours… #57797Doc, they gotta have shoots down your way. Seems like when i was thinking about a shooting school a few years back they were all down south.
Have fun! Dwc
in reply to: When it rains it pours… #57779Doc, you ought to find a used lab coat to wear to trad shoots! Dwc
in reply to: Western PA shoot #57771Smith, that’s crazy, but it reminds me of my cousin, a truck driver. One time he told me he was tired and decided he needed to pull over and get some much needed sleep. The stop was noisy with other trucks idling, so he just drove another four hours to a quieter place. That little extra four hour rin would’ve put me under! Dwc
in reply to: Western PA shoot #57157Yes, is that a club or personal woods? Very nice. Sounds like a good time. All fhe beat. Dwc
in reply to: Something to get your blood pumping.. #57153Beautiful! Thank you, dwc
in reply to: creeks and streams #53232There was a dairy farm here in the Poconos that had its pastures around a small pristine creek full of wild brook and brown trout upstream and nothing but chubs and suckers downstream. The local agency tried for years to have fences put up but met great resistance due to spoiling the farm. Later, when a younger family member took over, they fenced the creek off. The herd and farm did fine and the creek began to return to a healthy state. Everyone won but it took a change in attitude. The old fellow just didn’t want to be told what to do. Can’t blame him for that but the health of a beautiful stream was damaged for decades. Perhaps the first meeting about it was not done with the right sensitivity to all needs. Hard to say. Dwc
in reply to: A.M or P.M. ground blind or still hunting #52662As was said. Get out there and spend some time. Deer, no deer. Good for the soul and good for healing. Of course fresh, free-range meat is good for healing too! Dwc
in reply to: Cold Weather Gloves #52650Smithy, i just ordered a pair of the amer leather gloves to try on. I have wool gloves that i trimmed and wear the shooting glove inside. I’ll give it a try on the outside with these. I have a duraglove so i’ll see how it works. Thanks for the recommendation. Dwc
