in reply to: Feeling Guilty #11937
Carey, i understand what you are saying. I don’t get as much time in the woods as I’d like, but that’s just the nature of where I’m at in life. It’s the way it needs to be and I wouldn’t have any other way. So it’s been a few years now since i killed my first and only deer with a bow. The last two years i killed two deer with a rifle. Yes it felt like cheating but it sure put some nice free range organic meat in the freezer. I live and hunt in Pa too and i learned early to try to drop the deer in its track as the hunters out numbered the deer. You made a good choice when you took a hard look at the situation. Keep practicing with your bow for the winter season. Enjoy those steaks! Best dwc
in reply to: Think what you thought you saw #10881Great story. Congrats to Caleb on a really fine deer. Nothing like a happy ending. best, dwc
Just found the stitches rotted off on the heals of my llbean boots. I was going to order a new pair but saw they wouldn’t be a availaable til February. I called in and found i can get them resewn for third the price and in a third the wait. For $1.75 they’ll put lace hooks on,too. They are not the right boot for everything but they cover a lot of ground. Best, dwc
in reply to: New Traditional Cover Scent #9576Yep. That’s the Pine Seed Bug. They invaded Eastern Pa a out the same time Lady Bugs were seeded here to help fight the Wooly Adelgig, which is killing our state tree, the hemlock. Both bugs tend to hatch right about when the windows are closed up and they really bug folks.
Good idea to cash in on them Smithhammer. I wish you great fortune! Dwc
in reply to: First Successful HBO bow build! #9175That’s a really beautiful bow. Nice work. Congratulations on rewarded persistence. Keep the photos coming. Best, dwc
in reply to: Garbaging for Bears #8578I had to call up this thread and reread it top to bottom. A good discussion. I live and grew-up in PA where baiting has been illegal and unethical since I was a kid. That said the isles of sporting good stores are lined with bait. I don’t understand why the stuff can be sold if it’s illegal to use. Actually, I do understand. It’s about the money. Sounds like a lot of it has to do with the money in states that allow baiting. Outfitters are in business because baiting is legal. Question is, would the outfitters have gone into business if not for baiting being legal. False economy?
I’m not opposed to bear hunting, I just don’t do it. I’d love to give it a try sometime, but I’ll have to spend a good amount of time learning how to do it. I just can’t imagine sitting near a food dump being a good time. I also eat what I kill. I just hate the thought of feeding venison to my family that might be snacking on chemlawn. I don’t find the idea of feeding my family bear meat that was raised up on donuts and rotten, burgerworld meat any more appealing.
Again, I wasn’t brought up that way, so it’s hard for me to imagine baiting as hunting, but I have to say, I think that’s a good thing. I suppose we’re really talking religion and politics.
All the best, dwc
in reply to: GPS Suggestions #8392Etter, I’m sure there are reliable units out there, but i have to stick to the compass. I took cub scouts on a geo cache event, organized by another leader. I had my patrol turn on the units and asked them all to point north. It looked like a porcupine. The compass always works and you will have more confidence in yourself with one. Confidence is critical, as I’m sure I don’t have to say. Have a great trip.
With kids at home, home is where I want to be, but I sure enjoy reading about your adventures afar. Best dwc

in reply to: Sloooow Start, but Great Evening #7904Don’t you just love seeing deer tracks in your old tracks. Yep, I’m sure they have a sense of humor. They are also curious and sometimes that works in our favor.
I have some gallatin range wool, pants and coat by columbia. Great stuff for pretty reasonable price. They also make bibs, which I wish I would have gotten instead of the pants.
Good luck out there! dwc
in reply to: Sloooow Start, but Great Evening #63883With the regular season two days away I took a walk to a close stand to see what tracks were made in the recent snow. I ended up moving my stand about ten yards to another vantage. We’ll see if it works. Looking forward to more time in the woods with quiet contemplation on the stand. Best. Dwc

in reply to: Cold Weather Gloves #61751The American leather gloves came and they are really nice. I got the med/large size and they are too small. They fit nice and snug, but won’t work with the duraglove. I’ll exchange for the larger size and see how they fit. They are really well made and feel like they’ll be nice and toasty. I think the price is very reasonable for the high quality. Dwc
Ps. They also threw in a nice tip protector with the gloves. Nice touch. Dwc
in reply to: HAPPY HOLIDAY #61554Had a brief walk in the snowy woods here this evening checking for tracks and seeing plenty. A few deer a few coyote, some turkey and as always a few squirrel. Looking forward to getting out monday morning.
The second turkey dinner will be ready in a few minutes and a nice evening ahead with my wonderful wife and children.
A wonderful evening to you all! Dwc
