Nope, I’m pretty sure Doc qualifies without much deliberation. dwc
Paleo, Terrific that you have a chance to hunt in the same countryside as wolves. All we have are coyotes here, although they are wolf hybrids. I’ve only been fortunate enough to hear them howl a few times and I’ll never, ever, forget the first time. It seems like they just filled the woods with their beautiful, eerie sound, when really it was probably only a couple of them. Someday, I hope to hear wolves howl, through the woods or through the tent wall. Best of luck with your hunt. dwc
in reply to: Clay Video #10318The Winter Rabbits is fun. Charlie Chaplin could have made that one. This one is the latest, a take off on all those product commercials we all love. I think Clay was trying to set a record for a short video. Enjoy, dwc
in reply to: Winter Rove #9965Smith,
That’s a Slammer Special, RD longbow, 46# @28, 62″ by Leon Stewart. I also have a Browning Wasp, 45#, 56″, about a 1974 vintage. Leon’s work is really nice. I didn’t have any experience, really, to draw on when I got this bow, but I love it. He’s got a great reputation out this way. He’s a great guy, too. He’s been very helpful over the years with little tips that made a big difference. best, dwc
in reply to: Two Tracks String Scallops #9047I put on a pair and they work really well for me. I have them adjusted pretty much equidistant from the tips. I tried the 1/3-1/2 method and didn’t find any significant improvement. I like em. dwc
in reply to: Emergency Gear #9038Dave and Smith, I appreciate your tangents, if you want to call them that. The philosophy of all this is the part that makes it interesting. If we all just did it one way just because that’s the way it always worked, and thought one way just because that’s the way we always thought, it sure would be less interesting. Don’t think for a minute that these ramblings go off into thin are, unless that’s the air between my ears! Keep the challenges coming. Smithy, thanks cor starting this thread. You’ve shown some neat tools and neat ways to use them. Best, dwc
in reply to: Winter Rove #8910I figured it was a joke, but still I learn something! best, dwc
in reply to: Value of Reviews #8562Smith, I looked up Kevlar tee shirts, but I can’t find one with a wolf on it. Sorry, man, you’ll just have to risk it.
When I first got started with this archery stuff, the reviews on 3Rivers were a great help to me, as was their tech staff. I bought a Granberg chainsaw sharpener a few years back and one of the reviewers posted a how-to that was amazingly in depth and a really big help. I definitely like reading the reviews on things in this forum. Sharing information, if done truthfully and without agenda, is a wonderful thing. AHHHWOOOOOOO!
in reply to: Winter Rove #8555Alex, In my current set-up, I’m using 50 gr inserts for my Tuffheads, with 75 grain adapters. For the stumpers, I set up 100 gr. inserts and 125 gr adapters. I like the duct tape idea. Easy, removable. dwc
Steve, what am I missing?? I’ve seen guys say this is a buck and this is a doe, but could never see the difference. Actually, I think there’s a joke in there I’m missing, too…

in reply to: Homemade handiwork #63882Smith, that’s a great spoon. Are you going to carve out the bowl more or leave it burnt like that? Neat. dwc
in reply to: Arrow Weight for Hunting #63873Hi Letigo, in terms of kills, I’m on the low end of experience on this forum to be sure. Because of that, when I started developing my hunting arrows I turned to the experience on this forum, which was backed up by my local mentor. I’m shooting a 46# longbow, by the way. I tried to prioritize the order of things. First on the list, I wanted a high foc arrow that would be well tuned to the bow. That is a recommendation you’ll find on this site quite a bit. I got my hands on some 225 gr Tuffheads and worked backward. I ended up with a total weight of 635gr and an arrow that flies bareshaft and paper tunes correctly. I practice quite a bit normally and feel confident in hunting range out to 15 yards. I practice 5 to 30 yards and take a bunch of long shots for fun and for form.
I guess what I’m getting at is to put the arrow set up tuned to your bow first and then practice to improve you abilities. You will find you’ll need to make adjustments and with a bit of practice you will be just fine. The advantages of a heavier, higher FOC arrow seem to worth the effort. Have fun with it! Dwc

in reply to: question about stoves #63016If you need to boil water fast, the MSR is like a jet engine for that. They don’t do great for slow cooking, they can boil some water quick. D
in reply to: question about stoves #62864I’ve been using an old Coleman single burner and MSR International (multi-fuel) stoves for decades with good results. Liquid fuel can be a pain, but I never carried the bottles inside my pack. I put them in an outside pocket. Once you get to know your stove, you’ll be able to pack one bottle of the appropriate size and be good for the weekend. Pack extras in compatible fuel bottles.
I’m sure others will chime in with more up to date methods.
in reply to: "Backcountry" Monthly Article #62353Thanks. I was really glad we didn’t step on a big hole out there. I could remember from walking the dry bed how smooth it was and was happy that didn’t change a bit. peace, dwc
