in reply to: When Birds Squawk, Other Species Seem to Listen #38470There’s a great documentary called A Murder of Crows. It’s on Netflix for those of you who subscribe. Neat stuff. One nice thing about crows is that if you can’t find anything else you can always watch crows. Best, dwc
in reply to: Memorial Day reflections #37453Mike, thank you for starting this thread. I was also lead to this site by David Petersen, but by following web leads after reading his interview in the Sun magazine.
While I’ve never served, I have friends who have, a dad who gave three years of his life in Europe, England and Africa during WWII. I have a deep honor for those who served to protect us against aggression, hatred and greed. Some gave their lives, bodies, and health, while others would have been happy pursuing a life of love and prosperity in peace time.
This is a special time of deepest reflection. It included remembering who served and appreciating what we have here and what is worth working for now.
Thank you to all you out there who have become friends and mentors through this site. Thank you to Web Mom for making it possible and keeping us in line. peace, david

in reply to: Possibles bag #35881Those bags are nice. Mike, I thought Marines were tough enough to endure most anything, but perhaps carrying a purse is just toooo much. I’ll try to remember to wear my Sponge Bob had if I make to ETAR! dwc

in reply to: Arrow Speed/Weight Set Up-Opinions #33732Steve,
That’s a nice looking bow. I don’t think I’ve heard Eastern Red Cedar associated with a fast bow, or any bow. Does the speed come from the glass? Very nice.
I agree with you on the speed aspect. That’s why my hunting arrows came out at 630 gr. With that weight, I can also build up my judos to match.
I’d like to try my hand at a bow someday. I’m thinking about it and would like to do it with all hand tools. Maybe a self-bow backed with rawhide or something like that in the future.
Thanks, dwc
in reply to: Arrow Speed/Weight Set Up-Opinions #33336I’m adding to this with ery limited experience, but heavy on opinion! I’m in the sort of heavy arrow camp, 46# r/d longbow with 630 gr arrow. With this set up, it shoots fast enough to give good trajectory in my effective or accurate range. I’ve seen videos of deer ducking super fast arrows out of compound bows and have a friend that shoots four or five deer a year with a self bow. I think confidence in your gear through tuning and accuracy is paramount.
Steve, I’d love to see photos of your bow and maybe a bit of how you built it. Sounds sweet! Thanks, dwc
in reply to: What ya got goin? #29370A story in the NYTimes told of a team of Chinese scientists heading to Antartic to find evidence that climate change is not man made. Dwc
Fact check. I believe I misread that part. I’ll take another look at this when I’m not so bleary eyed! Misinformation is no good. Thanks. Dwc
in reply to: What ya got goin? #29126Beautiful day here. It pretended to rain last night and we really need it.
Trying to get my form back. I’m hitting pretty well, but the bow makes noises when my form is off.
Doc, sorry to play opposition, but climate change is real. And what is really real is not natural climate change, but Global warming, which is man made climate change. The outcome is not good, even for us optimistic types. A story in the NYTimes told of a team of Chinese scientists heading to Antartic to find evidence that climate change is not man made. China and India have huge coal reserves and now they want to have their turn. Hard to blame them, but it ain’t gonna help the cause. Wish I had some answers. Dwc
