Alex, that sure is making the slice of pizza I’m having at the mall (don’t ask. ) seem pretty lame! Dwc
in reply to: 36" wool pants #46792I bought a set of Columbia Gallatin Range pant. Warm stuff and the pants came unhemmed, easily 36 inches. Dwc
in reply to: Oldest BowHunter #46786There’s hope that I might survive the learning curve/timeline!
in reply to: Re-Thinking old Thoughts on Woodies #46103Hi Tradboot, welcome to Tradbow! The bad news is, I don’t have a direct answer to your question. The good news is, you’ll probably have to figure most of it out on your own. You’ll get some terrific help here, but you’ll be doing lots of fine tuning to get your set-up just right for you. That’s lot of experimenting and lots of shooting and lots of fun.
Off the cuff, it sounds like your shafts are a little over spined or too stiff, points too light or some combination of that.
Try some heavier points to start out with and see it that brings it over some. The up and down part is just you learning and getting the feel of it. If you have not already, look up videos on youtube by Moebow, Jeff Kavanaugh and Jimmy Blackmon for some great help on shooting form.
Enjoy the ride! best, dwcphoto
in reply to: Archery Anatomy #44463Arne,
Thanks for the tip on the “Archery” by USA Archery. I have also found some helpful things in Shooting the Stickbow by Anthony Camera. One thing that helped me early on that I found in Shooting the Stickbow, was to work your form backward. Without or with the bow in hand, extend the bow arm. Put your string hand where it should end up, just behind the ear. In the position you can feel the correct tension in your back near the spine. I think it’s put better in the book, but that’s the gist and it was helpful to me.
This is a grand adventure. best, dwc
in reply to: Arrow weight #44380Hi Kiwi,
Check out the List Your FOC… thread a few down in this column. There’s some good info in there.
Here’s mine. I have a couple inches of shaft left over, so just maybe you could start here, depending on your draw length. If not, go up a spine and tear into it. Enjoy! dwc

in reply to: What ya got goin? #43859Had a very nice hour and a half in the woods this morning. Had a twenty minute standoff with 4 or 5 deer. Found a few acorns, a couple of nicely used trails and some of the smallest droppings I ever saw. Are these things actually from a fawn or is there some other critter that would put a pile down like this? best, dwc

in reply to: Archery Anatomy #43779I just finished Core Archery and plan to read it again right away. The author, Larry Wise, gets right to the point, so it’s a pretty quick book to go through, and go through again. As Arne suggested, don’t pay attention to the type of bow, listen to the information on back tension, the mechanics of shooting and the importance of exercising your mind in the shot.
There are portions that I did not read that were specific to release aids, but I might include those parts in the reread. After all, it’s back tension that makes the release aid work, so it can probably be applied to finger shooting.
You could easily couple this book with Arne’s videos and have some excellent lessons.
Maybe I’ll put Archery Anatomy on my winter reading list now. thanks, dwc
in reply to: Colorado '15 #43296Alex, great post from your journal. Thanks for putting up these words and the great photos. What a great time! Good luck with your shows. best wishes, david
in reply to: Soft Mast Crop #42792I’ve seen some amazing loads on some old apple trees around here in the Poconos. We were hit pretty hard with Gypsy Moth so I’m waiting to see what the acorn drop will be. Perhaps since I haven’t see a lot yet, that’s the answer. dwc
in reply to: What ya got goin? #42708Grumpy, some of your kielbasa drifted down our way the past couple of night, whoa!
in reply to: Measuring Up #41708Steve, that’s a great story of strong resolve. My hat’s off to you. Before I got addicted to archery, I got addicted to flintlock hunting. My plan, if you could call it that, was to fill only doe tags in the early and regular season. In PA, you can use your antlered deer tag to take a buck or doe in the winter flintlock season. Food on the table.
Enjoy the holiday weekend. Best wishes, dwc
in reply to: Too Noisey? #40977Mike, you have the back story?
in reply to: Let's See Your Fletching #39781Glue questions for you fletchers. I’m using carbon arrows and fletch tape. I put a drop of glue on each end of the feather. Nothing special, but it gets the job done. I’ve been using Fletch-Tite Platinum and it works pretty well. Anyone have a better suggestion? Thanks, dwc
