I wanted to post an update, but also move this thread back up. Good stuff here and there have been some new members joining us.
I’ve been blind baling almost every morning. I’m also squeezing in a little accuracy in the daylight. I really have to concentrate on the parts of form but the payoff has been worth it. Great stuff. Thanks to Steve and Arne. Best, david
in reply to: New member saying hello! #11248Ambush, welcome. I’ve been on this site for several years now, but am still a newby with so much to learn. This is a great community and a terrific cyber school to boot. Ask you will receive. Enjoy, david
in reply to: Traditional Question #45370John,
Welcome to the site. I appreciate your thoughts on using a sight and why. Best considerations for the animal.
If I restricted my range with a rifle to the 15 and under I do for a bow, I might be able to get away without sights!
Cheers to you, this Thanksgiving day. dwc
in reply to: Happy Thanksgiving #45348Happy Thanksgiving to you, too, Grumpy! I always enjoy your posts. Stay warm, until it’s time to get cold again, and don’t forget to eat too much today. peace, david
in reply to: Website Upgrade #16587Robin,
An early Thanksgiving to you and yours. I humbly offer my gratitude for making this community possible, or at least convenient in the days we live in. My thumb also thanks you. peace, david

in reply to: Mike Mitten's article "Redefining Success" #23857I finally got to read Mike’s article. Very good. It gave me another point of view on a so called trophy hunt. It wasn’t so much about the rack as it was trying to figure that wiley critter out. Very nice. Dwc
in reply to: What ya got goin? #23405Steve, bone stock, but with some meat left on the bones. Last time I left the legs more or less whole and this time i chopped them into sections.
The fat came two ways. When I made stock and cooled broth I took the fat hardened off the top. I also cooked some fat and fatty pieces to render the fat. That way made more of a mess. I’m wondering if I could cook the fatty bits in water and let it cool much like the stock. Ever tried that? I reheated it and strained it to make as clear as possible. Dwc
Ps. I’d hate to see the cookies get stale in the mail.
in reply to: What ya got goin? #20476Thanks, Alex. This was the first year I also rendered the fat. Good looking stuff. Hope to find many uses for it. best, david
A friend sent me a link to the Heterdyning Tip of the Week. I had tried it before with little success. I had recently adjusted my bace height, so this morning I slid the string scallops (I usually call the string slugs) into the 1/4 & 1/3 positions and it really did make a difference. Any little help to get dialed in is appreciated. Best, dwc
in reply to: Re-Thinking old Thoughts on Woodies #16688Steve, when I read “racketeering days as a child” I was really looking for a good story. Now you’re gonna have to make something up. Dwc
in reply to: What ya got goin? #16626Didn’t do a lick with venison last night, but I did make cookies. Tonight I put another 7 quarts of venison stock in the freezer for a total of 24 quart. Tomorrow I bag the geound meat, back straps, et cetera. All tasty, all good. Best, dwc
in reply to: Website Upgrade #61001I sure am enjoying this site. thanks! david
in reply to: Website Upgrade #60492Robin, on the computer it now works like it did with the newest post on the right. Not so on the iphone. I am lazy, too, in that I liked the way it automatically went to the last post. I guess since I’m not using my right thumb to shoot I might as well use it to scroll! Thanks! Dwc
Ps. I love the forum menu at the bottom now.
in reply to: Blood Trails #60447This thread started good and got better. Leave it where it is so we know where to find it.
With only two kills and one non lethal hit (best I could tell after tracking my best). The no lethal hit was with my old Shakespear Wasp, 2016 aluminum and Zwickey Eskomo up front. I only had a few inches of penetration. I believe it hit the femur. The arrow dropped out after 20 yards and I found the tip of the Eskomo curled back.
This all isn’t much in the way of data. For the time being, I’ll stick with my Tuffheads. I’m tuned well and they gave more than enough penetration. The doe of two years ago bled like a spigot. This years was decent, especially noting the less than ideal hit. Somehow I’m inclined to go with quick demise option. Some places I hunt are small wood lots surrounded by neighborhoods so I’d just as soon not have to track through back yards if I can help it.
Obviously to me, I need to work on picking the spot on my shot. That’s the main thing. All of this is personal thoughts, not meant as suggestion for anyone else.
Keep the conversation going. Thanks very much, dwc
