in reply to: What motivates us to do what we do? #62693I watched Clay’s movie Sunday morning with a late breakfast. I had carried a stand and gear to hide it all over the woods looking for another best spot in the world. I ended up bringing it home anyway feeling quite content with the stands I already have up for the time left in the season. Plus, two4 got me inspired to spend a little more time on the ground. Anyway, back to the film… As Clay said in the end, it’s the mystery that takes me back. Trying to figure it out, trying to find something that might not really be lost and trying to feel like I’m the first one walking that trail looking…
Best to you all, dwc
in reply to: New member from NJ #50252Arthur, congratulations on having a plan that worked really well, just short of perfect. It was a great plan in that you’ll never forget that hunt. Best, dwc
in reply to: How do you keep warm? #46589Grumpy, Steve’s taking the easy way. Cold temps cut out the riffraff, at least that’s what I tell myself when I’m shivering. I bought my Gallatin Range pants big so I can put on a pair of Swiss army wool pants underneath. A ragg sweater over a couple merino layers under my wool coat and a scarf and I’m pretty good. The weak link is the toes. I hear that Uggs or the Bearpaw version are the ticket. My Sorel pack boots work well until it gets in the low teens, then it’s tough to last long. I use glomitts with pop tops with good success for my fingers.
By the way, Grumpy, how can anyone who watches South Park be grumpy? Dwc
in reply to: New member from NJ #38422Arthur, that sounds all too familiar, except for the shopping for crossbow part. Look up anything you can find from Moebow aka Arne. He’s a great online coach if you can’t get one in person. You’re off and running! Dwc
in reply to: New member from NJ #35060Welcome Arthur, I’m just over the big creek in the Poconos. Probably ran into you in the past at the Stanhope House!
All the best to you, david
in reply to: What motivates us to do what we do? #22489Happy Birthday Two4,
Enjoy your time in the woods. Perhaps the weather will get really nasty and you’ll have the place to your self! Good for you to be stretching it out. Enjoy, dwc
I never thought I’d find out that Fargo was related to archery, but I’m quite pleased. It’ll keep me smiling in the stand …
Yep, somehow it’s all related. Dwc
Love it. Must have been lost in some local dialect all these years. dwc
in reply to: Making sure they are sharp #36295Two4,
Thank you for your response. Given your experience, which seems extensive, I appreciate your views. You’ve been through much of the stuff we discuss here. I have resisted the urge to buy a mechanical sharpener and still sharpen by hand, even if it takes me some time. For myself, I’d just as soon so to the woods with a shaving sharp head. If I need to resharpen in the woods, I can do that with a file and actually feel pretty confident in my abilities to do that.
Thanks again for taking time to respond. You views a valuable to a guy like me, so fell off the turnip truck a long time ago, but is still relatively new to bowhunting. best, dwc
in reply to: Blood Trails #34945J, congratulations on your deer! Thanks for posting how it went. I appreciate it. best, david
in reply to: Making sure they are sharp #24690I suppose sharp enough is in the eye of the archer, but I doubt you’ll find anyone to say an edge is too sharp. I can get mine to slice paper and shave hair, but I have not gotten them to shave hair right to the skin like a razor blade will. I’ll keep on the path toward that. Whether or not it matters much slicing through the animal, it’s a journey I wish to continue for myself.
I will say that after reading a some of the Ashby studies, file sharp won’t suit my personal taste. I shot a small deer a few weeks ago and dug the arrow out of the dirt. When I washed the broadhead, a Tuffhead, it would still cut hair off my arm. That one got stropped and put in the number one position in my quiver.

in reply to: Where the Bucks Go!? #24618Wojo, nice photo of a nice runway. I hope you see that buck. I will also be hunting with my bow during rifle season this year. I’m interested to know if the deer change their paths much, heading for denser woods around here. I moved one stand into tighter, darker woods. The other stand is along a bit of a ridge where I found a nice trail this fall. We’ll see. Good luck out there! dwc
in reply to: Re-Thinking old Thoughts on Woodies #21535Grumpy said… Remember that if I wore pants with a 36″ inseam, I would do a face plant before I got out of the kitchen.
Cheers to guys who go get their coffee before putting their pants on! Best, dwc
