R2, if you and Diana come to Eastern Pa, I’ll show you a spot where prickly pear cactus grows naturally with a view of New Jersey. Dwc
in reply to: Open stance or conventional ? #10532I’m enjoying this thread. Better shooting has been a mission for me since I started several years ago. I read G. Fred’s book on shooting for the bowhunter and it helped a lot. While Fred writes of the open stance, he’ll have you twist at the waist to line up the shot. I’m enjoying improved accuracy with a more squared stance. I also find that if my stance is somewhat open, my waist pivots and my shoulders square up as I pull into full draw to get back tension.
It’s interesting to read what works best for individuals and for their particular intentions. I’m grateful for the sharing of information you all provide.
I just watched a Joel Turner video on blind bale. The one thing that I got from it was that while it is important to remember how a shot feels, it’s also important to remember what you are thinking during the shot. There’s visual focus and there’s mental focus. While they go hand in hand they are they are aspects of their own. Best, dwc

I hope your wife is recovering well. Sorry to hear that news. Happy to hear about the robins, though. We’ll probably be seeing them here soon, too. Good luck with the new bow. best, dwc
in reply to: What ya got goin? #19494I have not had much chance to go stumpin’ of late, so with the nice sun shining, today I made time. I only got out for an hour or so, but it sure felt good. All the best to you all, dwc
in reply to: Aluminium and high foc? #10094I haven’t shot aluminum for a few years now. I went to carbon because in my opinion they are actually cheaper than aluminum. When I could get old lots and used shafts for little money on the auction it was fine, but then the prices started climbing. I was going through shafts pretty regular, getting banged up stumping and running into one another target shooting. I’m using Beman ICS Bowhunters, which are only a few bucks more than aluminum and way more durable. These shafts were very easy to tune. I’ve built them up so my stumpers, target and hunters are all close to the same. I just weighed a brodhead tipped at 635 gr, a target at 625 and a stumper at 650. The hunters come in just shy of 29% FOC. On the stumper I have aluminum collars fore and aft, plus copious amounts of hot glue. With this set-up they hold up really well. I might break one about 4 inches back from the head now and then when I bounce it off the side of a sapling, but I only have to build about four stumpers a year. Overall, I’d say they’re a good deal. thanks, dwc
in reply to: What ya got goin? #49580I’m tempted to chip in for shipping if I could actually see someone trade a hat for a bow. 💡 dwc
in reply to: What ya got goin? #43262Steve, I look forward to a photo of your new dirty old hat. Grump it up!
Thanks for the offer on the bow. Mostly due to budget restraints, I’m a one longbow guy. Much appreciated! david
in reply to: Tuning issues #28603Learning while plowing through old habits stinks, but its the way most of us have to do it. Stack your bales high enough that you can shoot without bending down so you can develop your form squared away properly. If your arrows blow through the bales hang a horse stall matt behind them, a la Steve Graf. That works great. I do my blind bale work in the dark. It’s just easier for me than shooting with my eyes closed. Not only does it help your shooting, but it helps let the static of the day melt away. Moebow suggests months of this before any aiming! Have fun Dwc
in reply to: Tuning issues #25350If you are bare shafting well, then my guess is your form suffers in one way or another. I’m only speaking from my personal experience. I know that last year I had no problems in the 15-18 yard range, but things fell apart drastically out past 20 or so. I was happy to hit the bale at 35 yards.
I went back to form issues. See the Archery Anatomy thread. I try to blind bale practice frequently, if not every day. I closed my stance a bit too which helped me get into my back more. I’m no ace at the longer distances, but this work has already tightened things up considerably.
Keep watching Jeff Kavanagh and Moebow and Jimmy Blackmon. It’ll come. Best of luck, dwc
in reply to: Tuning issues #20010Do a search for Troy Breeding in the forum. His posts and advice really helped me learn to tune properly. Dwc
in reply to: What ya got goin? #18490Alex, that’s a great photo. Beautifully posed, full of gentle respect. That’s a freezer full of deer, too! I had to look up the Black Widow to see what the PL was. Actually not a bad price and comparably little extra for take down. I look forward to seeing photos of the new bow. Thanks for posting this photo. Yes, Mr. Petersen is a treasure. best, dwc
in reply to: What ya got goin? #61844Last weekend found us in a sweet spot of a blizzard that messed with parts south and west of us. We got about 10 inches and then stayed cold. Shoveling done, pain in the neck gone and we still have a nice blanket of snow on the ground.
Making pancakes and baking cookies and doing laundry. Don’t get better than this. Dwc
