in reply to: 2019-20 season updates #143839
I got to spend sundown in a stand today, the last day of rifle deer season. On the mend from a nasty cold, then the rain came. Went out a couple hours before sundown in a drizzle and eventually it actually got kinda nice out. Some squirrels and turkey gave me hope that deer might move around, too. No brown fur to be seen but dang glad to have a chance to get into the woods.
Next opportunity will be December 26.in reply to: 2019-20 season updates #143731Keep us posted on this new found stand. Sounds like a winner. I always love finding the next best place. All part of hunting. Dc
in reply to: Persistence #143730Ha! I thought I had the deck cleared to hunt Saturday and ended up with a bear of a cold. Still coughing but on the mend, I hope to out this weekend. Then I have a couple weeks of late season after Christmas. Fortunately, the Pa Dept of Trans has kept me in supply of fresh venison. I’d still like to tag one this year!
in reply to: Longbow vs Recurve #143729Ron, I believe you hit the mark. We live our bows but the performance is in the arrow. I’m not not bad mouthing the value of a good bow, but I bet a cheap bow with good arrow tuning will out shoot a great bow without attention paid to the arrow. Oh yeah, then there’s that form thing…..
in reply to: Bear shaft tuning #143726- Steve, i miss your witty retort and eyeball my wood shafts now and then. I have to start over as my shafts I used for my recurve shoot far left with my longbow. I’m too cheap, but maybe next summer I’ll feel flush enough to spring for a test kit.
Scout, I usually leave that glob of glue on my target arrows, too. It sure doesn’t seem to effect my accuracy! Dwc
in reply to: Persistence #143724in reply to: 2019-20 season updates #143295Well, I finished a final project for a broker course yesterday to give me a green light to hunt this weekend and then ended up with a cold that had be in bed almost all day. So I’ll see what tomorrow brings..
in reply to: 2019-20 season updates #143191Two weeks ago was the last Pa regular archery in my parts. Had a doe race past me about 40 yards to my left. She was like a blur charging down the hill. Perhaps she got a whiff of my aroma as nothing seemed to be chasing her. Later just before dark, on another stand, I spotted a doe coming up the hill toward me. When I walked to my stand I made the mistake of going through the trees instead of the opening near the stand. It always seems the deer will pause at my entrance trail so I like to put it where I’ll have a shot. Sure enough tgat doe hung up about 15 yards away but with way too many limbs between us. Meanwhile, three smaller doe came up the hill straight to me. The first stopped head on in a nice lane about 6-7 in front. I adjusted my stance for this one and just had to wait for it to turn. Then the two others came right up and stood literally touching ribs with the first on either side. Still all facing me head on. The first one couldn’t have turned if it wanted to. After a couple of minutes of nibbling on a downed hemlock branch they strolled right under me with one directly beneath me. I had to lean out yo see her. The one to the left made a hasty dash through the opening I should have entered through and was then in the brush.
I was left with a pounding heart and a smile.
Now it’s rifle season. I hope to get in my stand for an afternoon bow hunt tomorrow if this ice storm passes through in time.in reply to: Longbow vs Recurve #143148When I started shooting again several years ago it was with my Browning Wasp at #45. Then I got my Stewart Slammer #46 and have been shooting that since. For me the longbow is easier but that could easily be because just when I was getting the knack of the recurve I switched and the Slammer gets all the credit. Howard Hill and Byron Ferguson used longbows and all olympians and now barebow shooters use recurves. Somebody other than me has the answer. Dwc
in reply to: What ya got goin'? 2 #143147Happy thanksgiving from one turkey to the others! Enjoy a peaceful day, dwc
in reply to: 2019-20 season updates #142886I’ve been seeing a lot of deer, but mostly with no bow in my hands. I did get to hunt for a few hours yesterday morning. Beautiful, cold, sunny morning. Watched a nice buck walk near, but not close enough, to my buddy. Saw a Winter Wren up close and didn’t even know there was such a critter. Saw an owl of some sort fly by in the afternoon while walking the dog. Coming up short on exciting hunting tales for ya though. One more week of fall archery in my parts. Best, dwc
in reply to: More on "how to carry a deer." #142748Kees, I think I might have better luck getting the deer to give me a ride back to my suv. It’s an interesting method for someone with strong back and good legs. I’m getting to where I’m going to start cutting and packing out. Heck, last year I had to call my buddy to get the deer loaded. The deer are getting bigger in these parts and that’s true but I’m also less interested in a sore back.
Post a photo or two of your method. I’m interested to see it in action. Thanks! Dcin reply to: Bear shaft tuning #142657Scout, a funny thing about those compressed bales. A buddy got a few. He shoots a selfbow with wood arrows. I’m shooting an r/d longbow with heavy front end, high foc. Dang if I have a heck of a time pulling my arrows out of those things. I even lost a head or two in the bales. Dwc
in reply to: Don Thomas Health Issues #142656Don & Lori, wishing you great health and speedy recovery, not to mention revenge on those laughing pheasants. Dang invasive species anyway! Cheers to you! dwc
