Thank you for this post. What a great reminder. I’m going to look up that book now. Thanks for the heads up. best, david
in reply to: Broadheads For Wood Arrows #47012I thought the Stos looks like it would be a great head. It’s got the angle and the tip. When it was time to build a carbon arrow from the ground up I had read much of the Ashby reports and found them rather convincing. I agree that there can be a lot of variables in hunting and far more than I’ve personally experienced. On top of Dr. Ed’s reports there were some other accounts on deer and elk that backed up his work. There is a lot of evidence there.
This being a personal choice I honor the testing you did, John, to make a confident selection. Probably one of the reasons Stos and the bowyers mentioned went out of business is that there is such a great selection of excellent products. It must be hard to compete and still end up with enough pay left over to pay the electric bill. It’s not always the least quality that goes the wayside. There are so many bows that deserve the attention and so few dollars to spread around.

in reply to: Home page article #43450I also have to open that article back up, but from the all too brief look I took the one thing that stands out for me personally is that hunting is such a holistic thing that I have a hard time cutting up into parcels. It’s a discipline, it’s a pleasure, it’s an adventure, it’s food, it’s exercise, it’s a large part of my spiritual expression, it’s our planet, it’s where we live.
I also get that there has to be a way to communicate what is important to save all this and putting it into something near and dear to all of us, food, might be the way.
I gotta take another look. I really do appreciate anyone who can speak to our issues with intelligence and eloquence.
All the best, david

in reply to: Scouting a new hunting spot #12454Great scouting photos! That does look like it requires further investigation, bow in hand. That rack could make a nice mobile over the crib. Go get em! Best, dwc

in reply to: Broadheads For Wood Arrows #18685That’s good math. With my itty bitty experience, I hit a leg bone with a Zwickey Eskimo and the tip curled back. I think filing it into a tanto style tip would be an improvement, but I have a supply of Tuffheads and have no reason to change from them. Can’t do better, I don’t think. Dwc
in reply to: black-tail backpack hunt 2 #18612How many chipmunks for a solid meal? Did you get pass throughs? You recommend single bevels for them? Really, that’s neat. A good way to spice up the camp supplies. Best, dwc
in reply to: ARE YOU READY? #57452Grumpy, you don’t have to be embarrassed around me. I can get turned around in the woods quicker than anybody I know. Somehow I don’t ever really get lost but I really have to pay attention. I trust the compass even when I KNOW it’s wrong. I walk back the same trail almost every morning and I still have a hard time seeing the sun rise where it does one place up the creek. Sure keeps it interesting. I’ve stinked up the woods more than once trying to find a stand in the dark that I hadn’t been to in awhile.
Back to the thread, like Steve, I’m pretty much packed from last year. Took my four broadheads out and stropped a nice edge on them a couple weeks ago. I’ll do the same with my hunting knifes soon. Compass is always in the pack. Dwc
in reply to: My new baby #34035Grumpy, just let Arwen read your posts here and she find everything she needs to know. She’ll find out that there is no straight answer, not that you’re holding back. D
