That’s excellent! A good laugh. One thing I know is every tree is a good tree, it’s all about timing. Ha!
in reply to: What ya got goin'? 2 #128102Had a very nice 8+ buck come up the hill about 30 yards out. He was supposed to make a left but ignored the memo. I tried a couple of grunts and he ignored that too. I went out at first light and moved my stand over about a hundred yards. I’ll give that spot another go in a few days. Seeing some deer, including a few nice buck, but only forbidden spikies have come into range. Squirrel watching has been better than ever! Dwc
in reply to: Finger pain #128100EJK, for me it always seemed counterintuitive, but the deeper the hook the better. By that I mean first joint from the tip and a good curl. You might find the first knuckle a good anchor reference. For me, it’s a regular reminder. I get lazy and relax my fingers. Accuracy suffers and so do my fingers and then I remember to fix my hook. I started getting a sore finger tip on my middle finger. To take some pressure off I lowered my drawing elbow which also helped my back tension which also increased my accuracy. All good stuff.
Listen to Steve and Moebow and Jeff Kavanagh and Jimmy Blackmon. And keep having fun. Best, dwc
in reply to: What ya got goin'? 2 #127856Sounds delicious! Too bad, but glad, I don’t see too many rattlesnakes here. They’re around in a few areas, I just don’t see them. Enjoy, dwc
in reply to: What ya got goin'? 2 #127831We had our season opener in my section of PA a week and a half ago. First morning we had 7 deer come in. The only two that were in range for me were spikes, so no shot. I had two standing behind me in the brush eating acorns, crunching away at about 5 yards or so. They were making quite a racket just to tease me. Last Saturday I didn’t see deer while on the stand, but heading down the long driveway to my car I smelled that funky deer smell and there were two doe about 40 yards down through the woods. I wished them well and promised to connect with them next time. Fun stuff. best, dwc
in reply to: What ya got goin'? 2 #127830Ralph, do you have a good recipe for that shaker? Very nice, dwc
in reply to: Good Compass #127630Reading these posts illustrates how we need different tools for specific tasks. Where I hunt a button on compass would work just fine. The ranger compass just looks neat and probably wouldn’t serve me any better than my old scout baseplate compass I’ve had for 45 years. I also have two pocket transits, one a Bruton I got for a buck at a yard sale and another was said to be part of a mortor site. It had 300 degrees and I had that converted to 360. I still don’t know how to use those! Best, dc
in reply to: Dream Hunts #127513Hi Steve, all true. I think this was more of a project with spare parts laying on the bench. The heavy arrow part really is to match the rest of my arrows, although this ones a few gr heavier. I do have some old broadheads I’m willing to bounce off the rocks where the squirrels were. Mainly its a matter of time. One arrow for a few ounces of meat vs one arrow for many pounds. The curse of concurrent seasons!
in reply to: Good Compass #127447I don’t have a Ranger, but that’s probably my next compass. One thing I like about the mirror is being able to get bugs outta my eyes. In the meantime I’ll buy a cheap compact mirror to throw in my pack. Dwc
in reply to: Dream Hunts #127446That sounds like a great time. Someday I’d love to do something like that. I do feel very fortunate to be able to walk out the back door and hunt whitetail and squirrels. I built a heavy squirrel arrow with a hex head, about 650 gr. Mostly for fun as I’m usually consumed during squirrel season trying for something with more pounds of meat per shot. Have a great trip! Dwc
Hi Chris, you’re better getting elk specific advice from some of the others here. I’m just a wanna be elk hunter. Sounds like your accuracy is fine. The solid advice usually is continue to practice and get as close as you can. That goes for elk or squirrels and anything in between. You can find a lot of good advice in the Ashby section too. I look forward to many successes, which can mean meat and antlers or a great day in the woods. Best, dwc
I’ll be happy to do that. I’m expecting my copy to be in the mail when I return from vacation. Wish I’d had it a few days ago, but I’ll fit it in soon. All the best, David
in reply to: What ya got goin'? 2 #126885Yes, after reading you post a couple days ago I looked that up and started watching it. I’ve seen all of the series that I coukd find a few years ago. Good stuff. It was good for you to make that pilgrimage. Best, dwc
in reply to: What ya got goin'? 2 #126880That’s a good film. I never heard of these guys before. Love the shooting from the hip style. Nothing like being exposed to the right influence to push you ahead. Have you seen you shooting improve since the workshop? Dwc
