in reply to: Broadhead Edge #9872
Thanks for your comments. This is interesting stuff.
I used to be pretty good at getting a very sharp edge on a knife, but got away from being so picky for a while. Now, with broadheads, I’m getting the knack again, with file, stone and strop. It takes a little patience, but it’s worth it. This is with a straight edge Eskimo. I think I’d need a bit more practice with a radius edge, but they sure do look nice.in reply to: How do you find your arrows? #60673After seeing a buddy’s pooch at work, I started to train my lab to find arrows. My pup is about 4 1/2 months now and found his first real hidden arrow yesterday. I carry a pouch of dog food kernels and hold one next to an arrow to get him used to the idea. It’s working and the best part about it is it’s fun.
There’s one other trick I know for finding arrows. It’s being too dang cheap to give up. As far as I can remember I have three arrows still in the woods. One I’m pretty sure I’ll find when the snow melts, one is from last summer and one if from winter of 09. I’m pretty sure I know within a twenty foot circle of where they are and I’m still looking for them. Last Spring I found four when the snow melted. They needed feathers, but otherwise were fine.in reply to: Broadhead Edge #60483Looking forward to do my own testing, but September is oh so far away…
in reply to: Broadhead Edge #60220Very good. I’ve read a few places that straight edge has the edge, but it sure seems like the Eclipse is so well made that they must have looked into it.
I’ll check out the Werewolf when they are available.
Thank you very much for your answer.in reply to: Leon Stewart Longbow LSS #53789Hi Homer,
I think the Wasp might have a very slight twist, as the string does not come exactly down the middle of limb on the top.
The Slammer is a deflex-reflex. Once I got the hang of holding onto the bow with a tighter grip with a bit of palm-heel pressure I started shooting better with it. It was awkward to leave the high wrist hold I was used to with the recurve. When I picked up the bow Leon told me how to hold it and sure enough that’s the way. He also told me how to hold my recurve and it helped a lot with that, too.
Thanks for tuning in. dwcin reply to: 3D deer recommendations #47352The screen idea sounds pretty cool. Where did you get the screen material?
I bought a few feed bags from the feed store and stuffed them with plastic. The largest bag was 65 cents. The ones I stuffed with shopping bags turned into a mess quickly, as the light bags get dragged out by the points. The one I stuffed with an old worn out tarp is holding up very nicely. I just put two more together stuffed with the big plastic bags mattresses come in. I think they’ll work pretty well.
I have not used these with broadheads.in reply to: Browning Wasp #47350You’re quite welcome. Let me know how you make out. I’m in the process of setting up a new bow, too. It’s a process, but a fun one.
in reply to: Browning Wasp #47259Hey,
I have a Browning Wasp in 45#. Very nice bow. I got it for Christmas around “73. After some trials I ended up keeping it braced at about 7 5/8”.
Best of luck. dwcin reply to: Thoughts from a Luddite #45111Ireland,
Maybe you can find a way to insult me, too. I would love an Iowa whitetail hunt.
Keep writing folks, I’ll keep reading. dwcin reply to: Thoughts from a Luddite #43908Ireland, Homer,
Thanks for your words. I’m having a blast with it all, learning a lot. That’s what it’s all about.
peace, dwcin reply to: Thoughts from a Luddite #43726Hi Guys,
I’m pretty new at this archery stuff, but happy to say I’m pretty excited about it. I like to read and I find a lot of this new information from Dr. Ashby and others very interesting. I like to read what works for others so I don’t have to reinvent the wheel on my own path. I also look around and see some very successful hunters using basically the same stuff that have been available for half a century.
The most important thing is that we all choose our own path within the parameters of a safe and ethical hunt. The last thing I want to read in these columns is someone’s opinion about how others are wrong for their choice of weapon and broadhead, especially when they take the attitude of superiority in their choice.
We all have to find what brings us success, in terms of how we define that ourselves, again as long as it’s safe and ethical to the hunt and to the animal. For almost all my hunting, short of really cold days, I have two pair of Red Wind 914s. They are high top and gore-tex, one pair is insulated. I wear merino wool socks and I’m cozy. They are fine for walking, maybe not for real stalking, but comfortable, and very good for standing long stretches. Made in the USA, too.
in reply to: short longbow recommendation #36499Hi Folks,
I saw this thread looking for info on short longbows. I just picked up a Stewart Slammer yesterday. Mine is longer than you are interested, but he brought a 56 incher to the club shoot last night. They are beauties. Light, fast, tremendously well made. Leon’s a great guy and very well respected. http://www.stewartsarchery.comI’ve hiked, backpacked, and snowshoed in Vasque Sundowners for many years. I also had a pair of custom Limmers, but I ended up selling them on ebay. I have to say I’m probably the only person on the planet who had Limmer’s that didn’t work out. They have a stellar reputation. If you want a really rugged boot, I’d give them a call and even make time to travel to their shop in New Hampshire. It’s would be worth the trip.
For right out of the box comfort, I do love the Sundowners.in reply to: Browning Wasp #12680Hi,
I’m shooting a 45# Wasp that I got for Christmas about 1973. It’s a beauty. I’m using 155 gr heads and 27″ 2016 shafts. I have the brace set at about 7 1/2″. It’s pretty quiet with cat whiskers. I’ve been shooting it steady for about a year and a half, but it spent many years waiting in the attic. It’s a beautiful bow and has held up well.
It’ll be going back into retirement soon, as I’m picking up one of Leon Stewart’s Slammers in the next week or so. -
