Hi Troy, about a month since you started this thread and I’m wondering how you’re coming along. I didn’t shoot much this winter after the season closed. Getting back in the swing makes me takes notice of what I’m up to. I’m reviewing all the step from how I put my fingers on the string to where the bow settles on my hand to anchor and back tension. One lousy gremlin for me has always been focus. Last night I shot a couple okay groups and then I realized I wasn’t really focusing. When I burned a hole on my mark the arrows flew right in. There’s a good article posted here recently on focus. For me, all the rest are the easy parts. Focus takes effort. That’s my One Thing to focus on…. focus. Dwc

in reply to: What ya got goin'? 2 #132055Yeah, nothing like 18 miles in the rain! I did that distance on time in North Central PA during a drought. All the springs were dry and we hiked to a creek. We put our packs down and then decided the best spot was on the other side of the stream. Never was putting a pack back on so much fun! Keep me posted when you’ll be heading through Delaware Water Gap. I want to get my book signed! dwc
in reply to: What ya got goin'? 2 #132051we had a fast and furious storm blow through yesterday. Knocked out power again for a few days and busted up a lot ot trees, mainly white pine. Didn’t get cleaned up from the last storm. At least it’s warm and there’s longer days.
in reply to: Unscented leather boot conditioner #132050I ran outta Montana pitch, which I like well enough. I used to use aquaseal on my Sundowners and that worked fine. I tried mink oil years ago and my boots stretched out. Don’t know if the mink oil was a fault ir not. I did a small bit of review reading and decided to try Huberds. It smells pretty mild , got rave reviews and was cheap. Haven’t applied it yet. I just opened the can to give it a sniff. My sniffer is pretty weak, but this is pretty mild stuff.
Hi Troy, great advice so far. Camera’s book is also helpful to me. Shooting a lot isn’t practice. Shooting and paying close attention is practice. I think that if a coach is available it would be a great help. I’ve gotten my coaching from these pages, from books and from some excellent videos from the likes of Clay Hayes, Arne Moe, Jimmy Blackmon and Joel Turner. I also like to listen to The Push archery podcast. It all helps to motivate and teach. Keep smiling and your bad days will get a lot like your good days. Best, dwc
in reply to: I'm back on the wagon (or is it off the wagon…) #131728Grumpy, get well soon! Good natured grumpiness is good, grumpiness due to poor health- not so good.
R2, the only thing similar to a range fire I ever got caught up in were Prairie Fires, tequila and tobasco…
in reply to: I'm back on the wagon (or is it off the wagon…) #131676Funny to read this thread. I dug out a box of 3rivers wood hunters that I bought when I first started several years ago. I pulled out a couple already cut to length and with 125 gr points. They shot about 15 inches to the left. I switch to a 225 gr point and it flew pretty much the same. I have a few full length arrows so I’ll start with them again and see if I can get them to tune. I got pretty spoiled shooting carbons. I bare shafted those and they’ve been on the mark since. Dwc
Steve, just had a chance to read David Tetzlaff ‘s review of your book. Great review and well deserved! I just might pick it up again for a second read tonight. All the best, dwc
in reply to: Chasing Solitude – moose film #131265Very cool. I look forward to seeing the entire film. Nice! Dwc
in reply to: What ya got goin'? 2 #131206Ralph, all the best to you with those fires. I’ll take a snow storm any day, although I’m not actually asking for one disaster instead of another. I watched a news program about guarding your home against wildfires and they had folk clear at least a 100 yard perimeter of anything flammable. I hope you get some rain soon. dwc
in reply to: carbon arrows #131188Hi MD,
I made made that transition a few years ago. At the same time I found myself in possession of some 225 gr tuffheads. I didn’t realize it at the time as I’m pretty new at this, but that’s the order of things. Choose your broadhead, then you’ll know your point weight. Then pick a shaft that fits. If you’re heading toward higher FOC, then look for a light gr per inch shaft. If you just want a heavy arrow, then there’s more to choose from. I use a 400 shaft on a 45lb bow. That’s stiff by the book, but works great with 350 total gr up front and left a little long. I got lucky and was able to tune the first shaft I bought. Good luck with the process! Dwc
Good question! On an iphone you use your podcasts app and using the search tool look for the one you are interested in. There is also a Featured button at the bottom where you can see some suggestions. For an android phone, you’ll have to look that up. I think Google has an app for that and there are others. It’s worth the wading. thanks, dwc
Ps. good deal. I didn’t see that and I’ll have to look for it. Thanks! dwc
