in reply to: Merino wool pants #57405
I have a pair of Columbia Gallatin Range pants that I like a lot, but they are sure not merino. I’m seeing a lot more merino clothing than a few years ago, so maybe something of this sort is in the works. Somebody posted a link to some merino wool cloths recently and it didn’t seem like the prices were outrageous. I don’t remember that link, though. Maybe someone can pull that up. I sent a note to Woolrich, who used to be the king of wool. Maybe they’ll have something to offer. Let us know what you find out. thanks,d
in reply to: How’s the outlook for deer in your area? #56182Right around my place, I’m seeing a few here and there. I got some new property to hunt this year and saw about 15 in the four hours I was in the stand. A close encounter, but no shot. Busted.
in reply to: Whats you FOC? #56178No, she busted me before I got a shot. 😀 But it’s great seeing deer in the woods. A pileated wood pecker, a red belly, a brown creeper and too many tree rats to count. Nice day in the woods.
in reply to: Whats you FOC? #55957Troy,
I tuned my arrows to shoot straight and I got a pretty good FOC (25%), so how come that doe spooked out from under me yesterday??? dwcin reply to: A Few Pics From the Evening Hunt #55171Nice photos. Beautiful country. You remark about walking out in the dark being interesting reminded me of the hike back to camp in the dark after fly fishing a lake in Glacier National Park. There were bear signs (the printed variety) all over the place and I think it was working on my nerves. Mind you, I’m from Eastern PA where nothing eats you until you’re dead anyway…
Great post. dwcin reply to: Just saying hello #53381Hi Moe,
I also want to say thanks for posting those YouTube videos. They’re very helpful. Let us know when you post any more. Thanks! dwcin reply to: Whats you FOC? #51868Beman ICS Bowhunter 400, 50 grain brass insert, 100 grain steel adapter with a 130 grain Grizzly. 562 grain total with 25% FOC. Thanks and good luck! dwc
in reply to: Help with instinctive shooting #48619I’m new to this to, but I have to agree. Judos open a great door for learning to shoot. Use one arrow and carry a back up if you need to, but only shoot one arrow, pick it up and find another target. Shoot through holes in the brush, up hills and down hills. Read Asbell’s last book on instinctive shooting. It’s a great help to get the form in line. Then it’s all about practice and more practice. That’s the fun. You’ll get it. Good luck. dwc
in reply to: Finally got arrow problem fixed. #47480Yep,
It’s pretty cool. Watching the shafts, then arrows, work there way to center, bit by bit, is very rewarding. The whole time you also have to really pay attention to your form and consistency. The entire process makes you a better archer. I might not be the best, but I’m better than I was! thanks, din reply to: Plaid Shirts #46396Dave,
I found some heavy Swed military pants one time on http://www.sierratradingpost.com . I ended up buying two pair because they were only $20 each. I looked on there now and don’t see anything, but it’s a good place to check in now and then. They buy odd lots. They don’t seem to be the best deals all around as they once were, but they still have a gem now and then. dwcin reply to: looking for fletchings #45685I have to pipe in here to say I’ve had excellent luck with 3 Rivers and Kustom King. Brave Heart, also. I’m just in my third year of this trad bow stuff. I order everything online and have not been disappointed. 3Rivers has a great aspect in that they post reviews to get other archers perspectives. Good luck and enjoy! dwc
in reply to: Building the UEFOC Arrow #43998Troy,
I’ve read everything you’ve written on tradbow.com and I’ll be reading what makes it to the magazine, too. Thanks for sharing your years of insight. best of luck, dwcin reply to: Curious about numbers of deer most shoot. #43353Hi Steve,
I’m in Pennsylvania. With the purchase of the regular license we can take an antlered deer during rifle season. With an additional archery license, we can hunt earlier and later, but no additional deer. We can purchase up to three antlerless deer tags in most wildlife management areas. Some allow more if they’re really trying to knock down the numbers. Then there’s DMAP tags. They’re for specific properties that need a cull. Might be state forest areas, might be private land. I’m not sure, but I think you can get as many of those as you like, but only one at a time. Fill one, get another.
Short answer for most parts, one and with the extra antlerless tags, four. I might need correcting by guys in other parts of the state though.in reply to: Arrow Tuning is finally making sense #42875I just posted my update under a different thread, but this is familiar in some ways. I don’t have a saw. I’m using a Dremel with a cutoff blade. I’ve been edging the shaft into the face of the blade to sand off a little at a time and it does make a difference. Like you said, not so much for POI but for better flight.
I’m shooting at about 12 yards for the accuracy part of the tuning, as my groups widen up much beyond that. I’m chasing around a walnut pretty good at 20, but that’s not the consistency for the tuning. I do step back to about 30 yards to look at arrow flight, which is when I end up sanding off little bits at a time.
Again, Troy, thanks very much! dwcin reply to: Questions about my bareshaft tuning today. #42865I had to wait for some 100 gr. adapters to come in and fit them to my broadheads. My set-up is 46# Stewart Slammer Special longbow, a 135 Grizzly, 50 gr. insert, 100 gr. adapter, Beman 400 Bowhunters.
My bare shafts and field points flew pretty well. I put a broadhead on and it flew right down the line, but six inches high at about 12 yards. Second shot basically went into the same hole. A few more showed it still going high. I move the nock point up about 1/8 inch and bingo. Everything wants to go to center now. I’ll shoot this for a few days and see if it all holds true. Thanks! dwc -
