in reply to: How Often Do You Practice? #21431
I shoot almost every day unless it’s a downpour. I’m lucky, my dog has to have a nice walk in the woods early before the rest of the family wakes, so I’m out stumping along the way. Physically, I’m getting more consistent. My shots are tighter. The big hurdle for me it more mental. Picking a spot, a really small spot, and sticking with it. It’s much easier to think, shoot the center of that stump, and let it fly. It’ll hit near the center, but not necessarily the spot I didn’t pick. The more I concentrate on a point, the better I shoot. But that’s the hard work of archery, at least for me. dwcphoto
in reply to: Nugent, redux #56465Obviously, the Fever man still has quite a bit of power, in his ability to draw a crowd. Pat mentioned Hilton and Kardashian as two more examples of people who can get plenty of media (not to be confused with news) just by showing up. If you have this kind of power, lots of folks will turn their heads to let him act as host so their events book solid. A full house might be more important than who is sitting in the seats. It’s interesting alright.
It goes to show you the depth of the NRA and what their real interests are, which my guess is making money. It’s not an easy time to be an optimist, but there is still some peace in the woods. dwcphoto
in reply to: where are the heavier bows at??? #53353I tired of the TV sports a while back. It just wasn’t that interesting. When you’re standing in a tree in snow at 20 degrees, it just isn’t something that can be had on a video.
As far as compounds go, to each his own. It’s not different than anything else we’ve been sold or tried to be sold. Looking at the price of one of those things makes a nice custom traditional bow look like even more of a value. enjoy, dwc
in reply to: Right Wing Fletching #52871I wanted to add one thing. I was using a right wing helical and switched to a straight clamp, still with right wing feathers. I might have a little offset, but very little, and the arrows still spin nicely and fly straight. dwc
in reply to: Right Wing Fletching #51289From reading your note, it seems like you have everything you need. I’d say putting an arrow together and see what you get. The first time I fletched, it all seemed a little odd, but it came out just fine. With a little care you can remove the feathers and start over. Remember to lightly scrub the finish of the shaft where you are going to put the feather to break the finish. I use a plastic scouring pad and some folks use fine sand paper. Wipe the arrow off with alcohol and keep it clean while you fletch. It’s fun to see you own arrows fly right. Enjoy, dwc
in reply to: Big Stumpin' #49906Hey SmithH,
I was speaking mainly of location of impact. I do notice better penetration and impact on stumps and branches. I actually had more problems with arrow damage before I started messing with the FOC, but shooting aluminum would account for that.
I bought the collars, but then didn’t use them at first. A split shaft got me to put one on the front. I had to see a nock split to believe that little plastic thing could damage a carbon shaft, but now I put them on the back of the stumping arrows, too. dwc
in reply to: Big Stumpin' #49701Hey Smith,
I’m putting collars on both end of my stumping arrows and getting great mileage out of them. I used to use the O rings to keep the heads from unscrewing, but found that I was bending the adapters often. That was with aluminum, but I have bent a steel adapter, just once, and I think maybe it wasn’t screwed in tight.
All of this is just a little more than splitting hairs I think. In actual hunting range I see little, if any, difference in impact on the target between heavy and lighter arrows. thanks, dwc
in reply to: Big Stumpin' #49660Hi Smith,
They do look solid. I tried some hex heads for stumping a couple of years ago and after about three shots I gave them up. I think a head like this would be excellent for shooting game, but not so much for stumping. The problem was that the hex head didn’t penetrate at all and resulted in smashed arrows. The judos penetrate a little bit, helping to scrub off some of the energy.
That thumper looks like it would easily take care of a squirrel or rabbit though. Thanks, dwc
in reply to: Leon Stewarts Bows #48601This bow is really quiet. I shoot quite a bit, not necessarily volume, but usually at least once a day. Whenever I walk the dog, the bow goes along. It’s a real pleasure. Leon has helped me a lot also with shooting. Simple things, like adjusting my grip on the bow, have made a difference. My bad days are getting closer to my good days. dwc
in reply to: Leon Stewarts Bows #48582Thanks! You know, I can’t tell you, as I can’t read what’s on the receipt. I know the limbs are AAA curly maple with a bamboo core. As for the riser, I’m not sure, although I suppose I should know that. When I talked to Leon about the bow, I picked the curly maple and he recommended the bamboo. I wanted something pretty, but understated and simple and I got a beauty. My arrows are shooting quite well, so I’m happy to stick with what I have if needed, but I’m getting ready to glue on some 225 Tuffheads and see how they shoot. I have a few arrows that I managed to split the tips on, so I’ll saw them off to tune the heavier heads. Fall’s coming! dwc
in reply to: help gold tips #48571Wahoo,
Check out the thread in the Friends of FOC forum called Tying the Threads Together. Good stuff. dwc
in reply to: help gold tips #48560I only tried the wraps once and they got scratched in the fletching jig. Otherwise, they just don’t appeal to me, but that’s only a matter of taste, of course.
You should check of the links to tuning on this site. The arrows might be fine, maybe not tuned right. Others on this site can be of much greater help than I can. Reading the EFOC threads really helped me a lot. Best of luck, dwc
in reply to: help gold tips #48411Hi,
I lightly scrub the ends of the shafts with a dishwashing scrubber and whip them clean with alcohol. I use fletching tape with a drop of Beyond Bond on the front and back of the feather. I rarely had a feather come off. Good luck, dwc
in reply to: Leon Stewarts Bows #46969One more. thanks, dwc
PS. With Troy’s guidance, I’ve been working on better FOC. I’m shooting a 46# bow, Stewart Slammer Special, with Beman 400 arrows, 50 gr brass inserts, 125 grain adapters and 135 grain points (judos and grizzlies). I just got some 225 grain Tuffheads to try, too. Point is, this bow has no problem shooting a heavier arrow. My arrows are up to about 600 grain total now and they fly really nice from this bow. Thanks, dwc
in reply to: Leon Stewarts Bows #46967Here’s another, thanks, dwc
