Woodchuck, keep at it. I think one of the best things this traditional archery is teaching me is patience. I used to joke that going to church as a kid probably made me a better fisherman because I had to sit still for an hour once a week. Good luck! dwc

Thanks, guys. I’m lucky to have an excellent teacher here to hunt with and I’m also fortunate to have you guys offering advice along the way.

I ground a good bit of burger and fed a fresh tender loin to my family tonight. I’ll be packaging meat before work tomorrow and hope to get out a little more before the first season closes here on Monday. I wish you all the best. peace, dwc

            Alex,

I bought my first jig on the auction and it was right wing, so I’ve been shooting right wing since. It works just fine and there seems to be plenty of choices in feathers, too. Have fun! dwc

I see that Lancaster has parabolic feathers down to 1 7/8. Interesting.

                  Troy,

This time of year, especially with severe weather activity you can see “accidentals” or birds outside of their normal range. Let us know if you id it. I’d love to hear about it. dwc

A flintlock was the first step toward traditional archery some years ago. I built one from an old CVA kit, but with an K&R lock. That was a turning point for me. When it came to archery, a compound was only fleeting interest. I wanted to dig out the old recurve and get started again.

                      Really nice deer. Congratulations! dwc

I don’t know about the barbs, but as stated in PA it’s no more than 3″, which also makes a Tuffhead illegal. That does not make sense. Perhaps all broadheads were shorter when the rules were written and they just didn’t want spears. Anyway, it’s worth writing to the commission and asking for an update. dwc

As a beginner I try to practice a lot, usually with jodos for stumping and field points for my bag targets stuffed with old billboard material and tarps.

When I throw in broadheads it must have created some anxiety. I think I expected them to fly differently and they did. So I decided just to shoot broadheads more until the ghost went away. I’ve eaten up a couple of foam targets and they are expensive. Having enough Scots blood in me and a couple of crumb snatchers in the house, I want to spend as little as possible and still get a good result.

Out of the recycling came a cardboard box. I loaded it with my favorite catalogs that get tossed before opened.. you know the ones..and duct taped it tight.

This thing cost me nothing besides the tape and a few minutes and stops the broadheads easily. Usually they don’t penetrate the entire head, depending on the density where they land. They pull out easy and don’t seem to do any damage whatsoever. I’ve dedicated one head for target practice, but it only takes a few strokes on a stone and strop to get it hunting sharp.

The downside is that it is not weather proof, so I bring it in when I’m done.

                          That’s my trash target.

I’m in Eastern PA and I have to say I don’t mind being able to walk around and not be afraid of being eaten. It’s not me so much, but the kids.

Great shots. Nice surprise. Congrats on the elk, too. dwc

Nice view, George. I think perhaps we’re the silliest when we’re taking ourselves to seriously. Love the venison and glad to have some chicken in the freezer. dwc

A couple years ago there was a lad at Whittingham shooting at another rabbit-type, moving target range. He was pegging them. He had forgotten his glove and was shooting away, three bloody fingers under with band aids on his finger tips.
