in reply to: American Leathers #30466
I’ll easily second the duraglove. I’m on my second one. I shoot quite a bit, almost always once or twice a day. The first one split a seam on the index finger, but it was still workable. I sewed that seam and put it in my quiver for a back-up. It’s a thinner glove and gives good feel of the string, which might not be good for heavy bow shooters. dwc
in reply to: Glove vs. tab #29517I bought and tried a cordovan tap a couple years ago. I didn’t care for it much so didn’t give it much attention. This makes me what to pull it out and give it a good run. I tried a traditional finger glove, but it’s very stiff. I’m on my second duraglove and I like it a lot. I wondered if shooting a lighter bow, 46#, is the reason I didn’t care for the tab, as it’s very stiff. dwc
in reply to: American Leathers #28402Alex,
XL? Big hands must help you reach across the keyboard. I understand Arthur Rubinstein had enormous hands. I use a duraglove and some of these elk gloves look attractive. I am concerned about messing up my form. I have a traditional style glove. It’s very stiff and I can’t shoot worth a dang with it. dwc
in reply to: Any Boker Knife guys out there? #26980I have a Boker that I bought in 89. It’s been one of my daily carry pocket knives, a small stockman style. It’s been a good knife. dwc
in reply to: Antler Hunting #25849It’s the best way to collect at least half a rack out of season.
in reply to: DVD ideas??? #25734There’s a great film by Dick Proenneke called Alone in the Wilderness. Not about archery, but about a man who moved to Alaska, built a cabin and lived alone for 30 years. He filmed the building of the cabin and his lifestyle with a 16 mm movie camera. PBS aired it as a promotion and you can purchase it through them. Neat stuff. dwc
Here’s a clip from one of his films.

in reply to: Minimum poundage to harvest whitetail #24741It’s inspiring to be sure. I’ll make sure I at least get a good stumping hike in the snow today. best, dwc
in reply to: Kalamazoo? #24738Yes, I’m feeling sorry for Alex, too. It’s supposed to be in the single digits next week here in the Poconos and I know you’re going to miss that.
in reply to: Antler Hunting #23602I’m in eastern PA. I’d agree that once the snow is melted is a good time, although the snow is not so reliable. I don’t find a lot of sheds, but get lucky once in a while. I’ve found them in real thick brush and right on a wide open trail. dwc
in reply to: Minimum poundage to harvest whitetail #23568I like that Rain Man system. Sounds like fun practice, too. Can you do this in your Harlem apartment? dwc
in reply to: Minimum poundage to harvest whitetail #23006Can’t imagine why not. In PA 35# is the minimum for deer and 45# is the minimum for elk. Most would say that’s too little, but it must work. I don’t think the power would be an issue at 25 yards, but accuracy for most of us would start to open up at that range. 15 to 20 seems to be a normally excepted maximum range. Have some fun, dwc
in reply to: And It Starts Again #22577Yep, I voted first, then spent the afternoon in the woods. Did my civic duty then got the heck away from the election buzz and into the zen of squirrel watching. I was lucky to have a small spike walk right under me within 20 minutes of being on the stand, then waited another 4 1/2 hours, just before dark to have the next, lucky one, walk by. Congrats on your biggest. That’s way cool. dwc
in reply to: new bow help #22534With the little actual experience I have, I’d say you’re both in luck and in for a challenge. This just might be a golden age of bow making. Seems like there are a lot of excellent makers out there.
I have a long bow made by Leon Stewart, of Coatesville, PA. http://www.stewartsarchery.com . He’s a great guy, excellent maker and a wealth of information. He’s also very active in his local club, West Caln Sportsman’s Club. He’s definitely made me a better archer. I love the bow. It does all the good stuff a great bow is supposed to do. Enjoy the search. dwc
in reply to: Javelina hunt #22499This reminds me of the classic recipe for shad caught on the Delaware River. Clean the shad, lay it on a pine board and bake it for twelve hours. Take it out of the oven, throw away the shad and eat the pine board. dwc
in reply to: And It Starts Again #22497It’s all good! Have fun during the next two weeks. I’ll be watching for a successful report, in whatever shape that comes.
Today is a snow day for the kids. Home from school, toboggan, snow man and a movie in the afternoon. Life is good. dwc
