in reply to: Fletching Tool? #51837
I had a jo-jan six fletch and it worked fine. I sold it and bought a BPE. That’s been just fine also. Unlike some of the old timers… I’m impatient. I use fletch tape and don’t have any problems as long as I do my part. That includes making sure I break the finish on the carbon, clean them well and put a bit of glue fore and aft on the feather. I can get about five done in an hour in front of the tube after the kids go to bed and still get some sleep. Then the arrows are ready for the early woods walk the the dog. We can stalk a mean stump… dwc
in reply to: Aluminum Arrows #49709I was using 2016s for a while and really loved them. I was buying them on the auction for pretty cheap in odd lots. Then it seemed the bargains we over and I was running out of shafts. I like to do a lot of stumping and the bent aluminums were really piling up. I switched to Beaman Bowhunter ICS, which is about the cheapest carbon shaft. They’ve been great. Pretty tough, though not indestructible. They are easy to tune and give really good FOC.
If I were buying new aluminums for anything but hunting and soft targets, they would be much for expensive in the long run than carbons. dwc
in reply to: long shots #48419Interesting post. I met a few and know another fellow who is active in long range hunting, so called, out in the north-central PA area. These guys shoot heavy, I mean 75-100 pound, rifles mounted on a heavy bench and they are moved with the turns of knobs. These guys set up on one side of a ridge and shoot to the other ridge, usually 1500 or so yards away. One guy on the rifle, one or two spotters, and a crew on the other ridge to move deer or bear into the field of fire and track down the hit and wounded ones. I asked one of these guys, “just what exactly are you aiming at?” “Center mass,” was the answer. How’s that for precise?
I do have a great respect for precision and the skill it takes to build such a rifle and hit a target at a great distance, but to use animals for your target in this case is truly repulsive. dwc
in reply to: Gettin' Out… #47137Thanks for showing these nice photos. They make a great story. I’d love to see some rabbits, but they’re hard to come by around here these days. dwc
in reply to: Fast arrows #47116As far as speed goes, I’m of the opinion that all things equal more speed would be better. Straight flight, sharp broadhead, high FOC and heavy arrow, first, then whatever speed you can gain will probably help you.
If you need to hit something to stop it, a heavy brick might be the answer, but the brick has to be delivered and speed is an aspect of that delivery.
All that said, my hunting buddy who uses a hickory stick he carved himself always gets more deer than the rest of us in the circle. He’s just a better hunter using the straight, sharp, heavy path. Less speed does not seem to hurt a bit. dwc
in reply to: Cliff Zwickey Head #46725Yes, I’m looking at the barbed design, not the screw in aspect. I’m sure they would kill fine with a good hit, but it seems a less than good hit would result in an animal walking around with this thing sticking in. I have seen photos of older heads like that, but perhaps designs have improved, eg. the newer Zwickeys, Grizzlies, Tuffheads, and many others. dwc
in reply to: Fast arrows #46208When I shot my doe this year, I released the string and had time to walk over and drag her back a little by the tail to make the perfect shot.
in reply to: Humidity in new shop (new bow pics added) #46203There would be nothing like a small wood or coal stove to dry things out. Even a pellet stove if you don’t mind buying pellets. They are a bit neater than the other stoves. Once you dry it out you’ll be adding water to the air to keep it moist enough. dwc
in reply to: Cliff Zwickey Head #45866I looked in the book for PA and thought I remembered a no barbs rule, but found nothing of the sort. dwc
in reply to: New Low in archery Hi Tech ! #38933Alright, with all the crazy stuff out there, this is messed up. dwc
in reply to: What if …? #37494I just reread this thread top to bottom. I thought I was going to have something to add, but I think you guys pretty well covered. The only thing that makes me somewhat uncomfortable is the grouping of different hunters by what they choose to hunt with. That said, some of my favorite humor had to do with stereotypes, because it’s making fun of stereotypes.
So the only thing I really have to add is… great discussion. I appreciate the entries in this thread and truly admire the lot of you for having such convictions. Keep your sticks bent and your arrows straight. best, dwc
in reply to: witch is beter #32619This is a tough time of year to be shooting. I love the cold and love the walk in the woods, but those nice soft logs and stumps are hard as marble this time of year. When I was shooting aluminum I lost a lot of arrows in the dead of winter. dwc

in reply to: Smithhammer in print!!! #31812Smithhammer, I’ll have to look for the reviews. I always enjoy reading them. What product was it?
I hope you can find a way to balance earning a living and making time for the rest of it. When you do, write a good story about it to fill in the rest of us.
All the best, dwc
