If you like reading about how important being outdoors is try Last Child in the Woods. It’s about how being outside in “non-structured” play spurs the imagination and calms the spirit. It’s an interesting read. At the present my children only get 15 minutes of recess at school. Unbelievable. They get it at home for sure, which is my main interest. best, d
Looks like I’ll be the third PA archer to chime in. These past few years I’ve been doing a lot of this archery thing, but I got steered here by going more traditional with guns. Several years ago I built a flintlock out of a kit my neighbor gave me. Always loved shooting and hunting and the flinter gave it some new life.
My main hobby these days is spending time with my wife and kids and getting them outside, doing art, and just goofing around. I’m my son’s den leader, Webelos I, and having a good time with it. Birding, fishing, canoeing, all good. At the end of the day, watching a movie with my wife knowing the kids are resting peacefully tops it off.
The upside of a slow economy for a freelance photographer is more time with the family.
All the best to you. peace, dwc
in reply to: Please post Kzoo pics here! #55891Welcome back, Patrick. For professional reasons, I’m fairly glued to my computer a lot of the time, so I’ll be watching for your posts. All the best, david, ada dwcphoto
in reply to: Arrows???? #55734Happy Birthday! 72 is getting younger all the time. I hope to be walking as straight and strong as you, friend. You’ll be getting some great advice on this site, as well as some good wishes. dwc
in reply to: Use of Arm Guards-Pros and Cons #55731My bowyer, Leon Stewart, offered this when I talked to him about string slap. Hold the strung bow straight armed out in front of you. If the string is against your wrist, turn the bow in your hand so that the string is below your wrist. That’s where you grip the bow. I usually only wear an arm guard when my shirt or coat might get in the way. Even with a heavy wool coat I usually don’t have a problem. Give it a try. dwc
in reply to: Heavy Arrows #54963I’m shooting a 46# Leon Stewart longbow with Beman ICS Bowhunter 400 shafts, with 50 gr insert, 75 grain adapter, 225 grain Tuffhead, for 625 grain arrow. I’m getting about 28% FOC. I built up jodos with a 100 grain insert and 125 adapter to get me in range with my broadhead set-up.
I bought some easy pull 300 grain field tips for practice as they pull from my homemade targets easier than glue on field tips. Ain’t it a blast? dwc
in reply to: Off Season #54653The bow and arrow go with me on almost all walks with the dog. I love to hunt, but I just love to shoot. I don’t change any bows or arrow set-ups. I’ve been able to match my stumping set-up to my broadhead set-up. I have homemade bag targets and a short ladder stand that I can shoot from if I only have a few minutes to practice.
All year I’m involved in the hunt, practicing, looking for sign and clues in the woods. Just being in the woods is good for the body and mind. dwc
in reply to: Giving It Up #54642I actually like being in trees. I like the perspective and the ability to see around. This includes being able to see deer coming, but as important I just like the view. I’m a tree climber from way back. When I was a kid I climbed until the top was bending over with my scrawny weight. Now I only put stands up about 8 to 10 feet. 12 feet starts feeling too lofty for me. I love the feel of the tree swaying in a breeze. But then, I’ve been lucky. There have been no premature reports of my departing.
I think I enjoy the craft of putting up a stand as much as the actual hunt. It’s all hunting, the before, during and after. I’ve taken down a couple of stands and have already moved one to a new place for next year.
And, yep, I also like to hunt on the ground. It’s all good.
in reply to: Cliff Zwickey Head #53557Alex,
Not a problem. For me it was mainly for ethical aspects, as is pointed out here continually much of what is legal we, as traditional archers, don’t consider ethical. This head is found on the shelf of a traditional archery seller and a terrific one at that.
By the way, this post was not meant to single out 3Rivers, so my apologies if it has in a negative way. 3Rivers has been very good to me over the years.
I’m really pointing to a head offered for hunting and asking what do you think of this? I already know what I think and perhaps could get either verification or new information.
Thanks, Frogger! dwc
in reply to: Heavy Arrows #53530I’m using 625 grain arrows with my 46# longbow. I have cat whiskers cut short, as installed by the bowyer and it’s very quiet. I went to a heavier arrow for other reasons, but it’s quiet, too.
in reply to: How times change. #52299Steve,
Well said. thank you, dwc
in reply to: 4 x 3" Fletching #52284I started using some 4x3s and they seem to hold up fine. Sometimes I wonder if the tops of the larger feathers start to wear quicker. I’m still using some 3 x 4 ” along with the 4 x 3″ and they land right along side each other. dwc
in reply to: Cliff Zwickey Head #52254Dave,
Thanks for your post in this thread. I think it’s important to consider and honor our forefathers’ contributions. It’s also important to honor our sport, which the forefathers’ obviously loved, by continually improving the way we do things, not to fit in with our times, but attempting to make it truly better. Much of what this group is dedicated to is no passing fade. We look for a core understanding of what is good for nature and in that what is good for our sport.
I learned countless good things from my father, but he would be disappointed if I wouldn’t try to learn from his mistakes as well as from my own. best, dwc
