in reply to: How windy is too windy? #24509
I find you can get away with alot more movement while making a stalk in windy conditions but as Steve McD said too much wind can affect your arrows flight. Deer are more skittish in windy weather and safety can be factor especially if it is coupled with rain after a dry spell. Dead wood is bound fall so beware if hunting in the woods in windy weather.
GTA, I don’t think you made a bad call on that one but sometimes you can hunt late on a windy day and the wind will die just before dark. Keep your eyes peeled if that happens. Congrats to your Dad on his 6 point.
Duncanin reply to: Hoyt Recurves #23430I have a Hoyt Hunt Master TD that I have used since the late 80’s early 90’s and I like it for its veratility since I have more than one set of limbs for it. However, there alot of different models out there. You should go where you can shoot some different makes/models before deciding especially if the budget is limited. You want to be happy with your purchase. If your local shop has used bows you might find a good deal there too.
in reply to: Choosing the right feathers #23413I like the banana cut but they do make more noise than other cuts. I mostly use the 5-1/2″ shield but I have also used the 5″ parabolic. The parabolics work well with my recurves but my long bows seem to like the shield or banana cuts.

Still in all, to harvest an old doe with a traditional bow is a rare accomplishment, at least for me.
I absolutely beleive that older does and bucks have a sixth sense and that they can sense our presence in some cases. Could be as Steve Graf suggests, our personal aura that they can sense when by all other physical conditions they should not. And there is no doubt that the lead doe is the hardest whitetail to kill and the bravest. In constant flirtation with total disaster while teaching her troop how to survive. A trophy in my book.
Duncanin reply to: Wood Arrows???? #22292Patrick,
OK, maybe some of them did side step a little.Ralphs,
I usually use the rubber blunts. My flu flus have steel blunts but the rubber ones will work too.Duncan
in reply to: how to hunt mature does? #22284I agree with Steve. It is not wise to shoot at alarmed deer. Your arrow will not get to the target before they have dropped and turned to vamoose. Assuming you could draw, it likely would result in bad shot placement. There is plenty of video footage to prove this. Probably can find some on Youtube.
Duncanin reply to: Wood Arrows???? #21802Ralphs,
I had another thought about stump shooting arrows. You could fletch up some 4 fletch flu flus on cedar and the full length fletch will slow your arrow down enough to keep breakage to a minimum. Point of impact will change though. Noise won’t be a factor in stump shooting, have not had any stumps duck my flu flus 🙂
Duncanin reply to: yes I AM a deer hunter ! #21788Congratulations Steve!
Like many hunters I also got my first deer with a rifle. And I’m not above hunting with one from time to time.
Duncanin reply to: Wood Arrows???? #21059Welcome Ralphs!
Cedar will eventually break too. I’ve had good luck with hardwood shafts for stump shooting. I’ve used hardwood dowels in 11/32 and 5/16 and they are nearly indestructible. I’ve also made my own from ash which as a little lighter than hickory or oak dowels.
If you are looking to buy shafting you might try laminated birch, I hear that is pretty tough.

Duncanin reply to: How Time Flys…. #21046Steve,
I would consider your season thus far, successful, having seen all of that wildlife and made memories of the hunt.
Our deer season will draw to a close Jan 1 but the small game seasons continue through the end of Jan for squirrel and Feb for rabbits. Hope to have a hog hunt this spring so I have something to work toward. Hope everyone had a great Holiday!

in reply to: Im No Deerhunter #17398Steve,
Don’t give up because you think you need to spend more time at it. While pulling an all day hunt can sometimes be productive, I have taken many deer with only 2-3 hours or less spent in my stand. And some were taken only minutes after getting into my stand. Having been tied to a job all my life, hunting time was often after work catching the last 2-3 hour of daylight which can be the most productive time of day to see deer. So don’t give up, just work within your own comfort zone, identify a good area and try hitting it at “prime time” as I call it. Another approach in the morning is not going out early like everyone else. Try hunting from 9-12 and you might be surprised. Other hunters leaving for lunch will often stir the deer up in their movements.
Duncanin reply to: Get off me! #17381Bet the other deer won’t have nothing to do with him.
in reply to: A Confession and an Oath #17380While I do like a new bow now and then, I won’t switch back and forth between longbows and recurves during the season. Taking Fred Asbel’s advice from a past TradBow article, I pick the bow I want to hunt with I shoot only that bow until season’s end. As for my arrows, I like wood, cedar for target, hardwood for hunting. However I also use aluminum mostly because I have a supply left over from the compound days. And I like Zwickey heads but I also like the old Bear Razorheads. These things have worked for me so I don’t see a need to change.
