in reply to: AZ Coues hunters? #52824
Dave,
My only desert experience was a visit to Fort Craig New Mexico where our ancestor Capt. Alexander MacRae was stationed at the time of his death in 1862. We were there researching and not hunting since my Dad is not a hunter but I quickly saw that walking up some rabbits or quail would be a possibility as there were lots of wildlife in the area. We walked on the game trails over by the Rio Grande at the Mesa de la Contedero or Black Mesa as it is also known. I was very nervous seeing those fresh bovine tracks but Dad was undaunted, not being a hunter, he had no idea how dangerous feral cattle in a thicket can be. But anyhow, I was quite mesmerized by the diverity of plants and animals and I hope to go back some day to hunt. Any time spent in the desert tops on my list!in reply to: Where is Steve Sr. #50877Being an older employee of a large corporation, I’m seeing more and more of new hires and student interns coming in with that style of speech. To me it sounds indecisive, but my generation would interpret it that way. It may not matter if they are communicating with others like them but as long as older folks are doing the hiring there could be a problem coming across as indecisive. I want to believe it is a fad that will eventually die off.
Well, we are getting off topic here. The main concern is what’s going on with Steve Sr.in reply to: Where is Steve Sr. #50087Hiram is back but still no posts from Steve Sr. Hope he is OK.
in reply to: Where has my season gone??? #50077Yep, and 2010 is almost here!
in reply to: Ideal Broadhead weight #48888125 gr or 145 gr is what I have used over the years. I still use the 100 gr per pound of draw weight that has been the standard forever. For instance the arrows I launch from my 45 pound recurve weight about 450 gr and they fly straight. Of course the largest game I have hunted is whitetail deer. If I were going for heavier game I would use a heavier bow and would seriously consider the new heavier arrow setup. I do believe tailoring your gear to the game you plan to hunt is good practice.

in reply to: Chasing Whitetails in the season's first snowfall! #45122Well, surprise, surprise, we got some weather here in NC! I’m not necessarily chasing whitetails in this since we got sleet on top of snow. Kind of crunchy. Its beginning to snow again as I’m writing this. However I’m thinking I might wait by a trail this evening. Who knows, I might get a shot at something?
in reply to: How Old is Too Old? #44028Steve,
It could go either way. I’ve had meat that old that looked and tasted fine and I’ve had some that was freezer burned and could not be salvaged. I guess it depends on the packaging and how well it was trimmed before packaging. I usually thaw some out and check for looks and smell. If it looks good and smells good I get the pan hot and start sauteeing an onion and some garlic because we all know that good things begin with sauteeing an onion and some garlic!!Duncan
in reply to: Arrow Selection #44023Sure I’ve bent a few XX75’s, even split some on rock. Will I stop using them? No. Have I broken any cedar shafts? Yes but I still shoot them too. As others have noted here, hickory is nearly indestructible, unless you shoot one into the campfire :D. The only wood shaft I have used that can equal hickory is natural viburnum. Very tough stuff. My go to stump shooting arrow.

in reply to: New Bow…but not THE bow… #38115Steve,
I think it looks good in the pics. It will look better once it is finished. The wood glue works on my selfbows because I’m just gluing straight to the wood. Is your fabric cotton or synthetic? I would definitely swap you some tree bark for some of your cloth.
Duncanin reply to: Good old string trackers #38085I’ve toyed with using them for rainy days, but all I have really done is test shoot them with good results. I would use it if conditions warranted but only at 10 -15 yards. Attaching the line to the arrow is a cinch with screw in points but I’m not sure how I would accomplish that with wood arrows and glue on points.
Duncanin reply to: longbow or recurve #35776Richie,
I own and shoot both, however I don’t switch around during the season. I pick one and stay with it through the season. Makes the other bows so jealous. My recurves are all commercially made. 2 Vintage Bears, 1 Hoyt, and one Samick. I have one custom longbow, a JD Berry, and the rest of my longbows I made myself and are selfbows.

in reply to: Group sizes? #35747Hey Rocks,
My groups look about like that most of the time out to 25 yards if I only get to shoot about once or twice a week. The more I can shoot the tighter they get. You’ll know when you are tightening up, you’ll be bustin’ knocks and arrows!
