Best wishes for a speedy recovery. 😀
x2, get well soon Doc.
in reply to: Tapered Shaft Question #54188Thanks for all the replies. I think I’ll try one and see what happens. I wanted to try to make some 50-55 11/32s work in my 50 bows without going over 160gr on the tip. Cutting them longer is also a thought. My draw is 26″. and I used to shoot 55 and 60+ but not in few years.

Into the Wild was a great, sad, read. I enjoyed the movie, too. What I really love from all this is the sound track of the movie, by Eddy Vedder. Beautiful, sad, haunting stuff. thanks, dwc
I want to see the movie but also sort of don’t. May wait for it to hit Netflix.

Neither book is about archery or hunting but both are nonfiction accounts of intense life-altering experiences, just as trad bowhunting can be for the sensitive thinker.
I recently read Into the Wild. Fascinating but also very sad.
If you liked these you might also like Wild by Cheryl Strayed. Also not about archery but deals with addiction, dysfunction and loss. Literally at a fork in the road. I mentioned it because unfortunately Cheryl encountered bowhunters that were not representitive of all bow hunters. The problem was not that they were bowhunters but that they did not conduct themselves in a respectful manner and that was very disappointing. But the truth is that type of person exists.
And for another similar story set in the Colonial Dutch West Indies, try The Ten Thousand Things by Maria Dermout.
a tragic story with amazing descriptions of the sea and islands fauna and flora and a bit of animism in the customs of the islands.
I enjoy fiction and non-fiction alike. Probably my favorite fiction writer is Jim Harrison. Start with True North and go from there. If you like it you will only want more!

That is neat. Do you feed a square blank into it? I have a hand powered planing jig that is somewhat time consuming that starts with a 3/8″ square blank of whatever wood you want to use. Straight tight grain as you said earlier is most successful. .
Thanks for posting that

in reply to: Bow restoring #50724I have two older Bear bows and they both had those cracks in the glass when bought them used, one in 1978 and the other in 1982. They shoot fine. I consider them part of the “patina of age” 😀
in reply to: Last minute Arizona advice for Bruce and I #50712Hey Guys,
Don’t forget plenty of H2O, you’ll need it the next day after all that whiskey drinkin’!
I really hope you tote those sidearms around for nothing but you know the old adage. Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. And my favorite by my old friend A. Outlaw: “I’d rather get caught with it than get caught without it.”
Be safe in the desert good luck with the Javies. I’m looking forward to some pics!

Will the rabbit hunt be in the same place? Should I just check the website for the date and time?

Yea, but not that bad. Now that I know what I’m doing (sort of), it will go faster next time. All told, the arrows cost me about $0.40 (not counting point) to make. So that’s some consolidation, especially when I can’t find one after a really good shot 🙄
You can’t tell in the picture, but the yellow is really bright. I think it’s saved me a few lost arrows already. Hopefully the deer won’t mind it too much.
Steve, those are nice. Any tips on picking a board? Did you hand plane them or do you have dowel set up?
