Cool, very detailed.
Maybe I missed it but how did you come out on your hog hunt with the homemade trade points?

Does your school have archery as a course? I’ve known several students who took archery as a filler course once other credit requirements had been met. If so, they might need some help and might welcome someone who has some experience. Also look for local archery clubs, they might give a student a break on fees.
Where I am, the local wildlife club has 100 field targets and a 28 target 3d course. Non-members can use it on weekends for a very modest fee and they have loaner bows of all types and wts. Maybe there is something like this near you, you just have not found it yet.
in reply to: How were your Coues' deer hunts,Mr. Petersen? #55806Dave,
You are one tough Hombre! And as Coues deer go that looks like a trophy to me. Hope to see the rest of the story in TBM soon.
PS – Does the Missus know about your tumble?

in reply to: A true custom bow #54763Another reason to stick with a proven design (unless you have $$ to spare) is custom building can get expensive. I know if I’m going to drop alot of cash on a custom I don’t want it to end up in a pile of splinters after a short time. I think you could add custom touches as long as it does not interfere with the bow physics of a proven design.
I’m with Dave, let’s hear your list of wants, there may be a bowyer out there that already makes what you want.

There are a few folks here that make bows. I occasionally make myself a selfbow out of hickory. Been thinking about making one soon out of the one stave i have left. I need to cut some more staves but it has not got cold enough.
If you like laminated bows some of those guys should chime in soon.
You can search the forum and find some of the buildalongs.
in reply to: Side Quiver #53545I have my homemade version of the GFA and it is OK but I also have trouble with its awkwardness. It does solve the problem of carrying arrows with hex heads or other similar small game heads.
I have also been looking at the one you posted a link to that is all leather and I’ve been considering making something similer.
As far as side stalker type quivers, you could easily make one your self.

in reply to: I missed you guys! #53534Love the racoon pic. LOL, “whopped” is the only word to describe blunting or judoing a critter!:D
So, where did you run across the little bandit?
in reply to: New Member #52209Welcome! We love to see bow pics. 😀
in reply to: I missed you guys! #47197Just squirrels for me. I’ve been leaving the deer be for now. Squirrels are easier to drag 😀
But hey, I hope school is going well.

in reply to: Personal Philosophies #44794Paleo,
You said it, “Less is more”. If I could condense it down, those three words would describe it for me. My short experimentation with compounds only revealed to me that growing merchandising machine that is today’s outdoor industry and it turned me off completely. Between that and what Smithammer described as that frenetic “look at me” culture that has developed, aside from hunting, but has completely infiltrated and become an intergral part of commercial outdoor sports, hunting included, Traditional was somewhere I could escape to and become grounded again. Like returning home after being away fro awhile. Maybe I’m just getting old and anything new is suspect, but I know what I like and I’ve been Trad longer than I’ve been anything else.

I know it ain’t “traditional” but it is smart. I’d rather spend my traditional time doing something else, like getting upity on this forum 😆
Steve is there any special technique you use when using the grinder on 2 blades. Do you use a jig? A certain wheel grit?

in reply to: Need some advice #43420I’d do what Troy suggests but in the mean time, while you are taking your time pondering which bow to get, there are some things you can do to quieten that Shakepeare.
First make sure you have the right length string on it, then make sure your brace height is correct (it could be between 7-1/4″ and 8″). Twist the string tighter or loser to change the brace height. Next add some string silencers, catwiskers or wooly puffs can do wonders. Start with the silencers about one hand span from each limb tip then try adjusting them in or out as needed. Another benefit of having all of this as correct as possible is improved arrow flight.
Hope this helps
