Ah, so next time we go carp shooting if I could hide your glasses I would have a chance of out shooting you? 😀

in reply to: Grizzly hunt! #13778

I’m among those who would only attempt to kill a grizzly if in self defense. Otherwise I would rather watch them than pack them out. I have hunted and would entertain hunting black bears again if I had the oppotunity, although since I’m not very fond of the meat they are not high on the to do list. BTW the meat I had to eat was handled and processed by me and I know it was done right so my dislike is not due to mishandling the meat. The taste is not what bothers me but the richness of it. I prefer much leaner meats. My system just does not agree with greasy meats. I don’t mind if others want to hunt the grizzlies but I just wonder what they do with all that bear meat. Or did they just pack out the hide and skull. Hmmm. 😕

in reply to: Bod-Kin Broadheads #12854

3 Rivers used to have a Bodkin brand broadhead which I bought for small game hunting since the reviews of it were suggestive that they were good for that. I found them to be inconsistent in quality compared to other broadheads but for small game it was no matter. Last fall I saw the MA-3 advertised as the Bodkin and they looked better so I bought 2 sizes of those. The 130 gr heads were easy to align, were very uniform in quality and fly like darts from my 45# Hoyt Huntmaster. There are way better than the old Bodkin. The old bodkin was straight edged and as Dave mentioned the MA-3 is convex and the steel is somewhat softer but sharpens easily. I would use them for small game or deer sized game any day.

I have heard that the MA-3 has been the darling of broadhead tournament shoots everywhere because of their consistent accuracy even out to longer tournament ranges. did I say mine shoot like darts right out of the package? 😀

in reply to: Squirrel State #12843

            Wild,

Squirrels can be found just about anywhere but down here any game land with some hardwood ridges or a good pin oak swamp is going to have plenty of grays and down east there are a few fox squirrels but I leave them be since they struggle to survive with the demise of the Loblolly pine here in NC.

I have visited Illinois around the Peoria area and stayed at a home near the Illinois River. I was impressed with the plentyful and huge fox squirrels everywhere. I did not hunt them as I had come there for the ducks on the river but always wanted to go back and try it. I saw plenty of squirrels in Maryland’s eastern shore including the Delmarva Fox Squirrel which was protected at the time so we had to let them be. They were fun to watch while on the deer stand though. There used to be a population of white squirrels in Chickahominy Park in Va but I have not heard anything about them in years. I beleive this is a WMA and it has been touted for good small game hunting in the past. Well good luck with planning a hunt. If you ever get down here to NC during the season I can steer you to some good squirrel hunting on public land.

I did not mention in my last post that I do manage a winter garden down here in the hollow when the leaves are off and there is more daylight on the beds. spinach and turnip greens grew very well last winter and when I’m not too lazy I can get some really good lettuce going in Feb thru early April. Of course the salad bar is closed to all ungulates and stays covered with deer netting. An added benefit of the turnips if they bolt early is the bees love them since at that time they are about the only flowers in bloom. I left them blooming for weeks just for the bees.

Well since you offered, I could use a cabbage. Its just me and the missus now. Bob moved to Texas last summer and is now on his own.

I dream of leaving the rat race but off the grid permanently would be extreme for me though. I’m not familiar with the subject of the thread so I’ve got some catch up to do. The rat race comments made me think of something I saw recently. A quote, who said it (some wall street type)I can’t recall but it goes like this:

“You may be winning the rat race but you are still a rat!”

                  😀

The family garden, brings back memories of planting and all the hoeing and then going across the road and hoeing the neighbors garden too. I’ve tried everything here including raised beds but nothing does well down here in the hollow. The place I lived at before was great though. I could till 1/2 acre and not worry too much about what the critters ate. There was always plenty for us.

That looks like a great time. Love to catch those river robins. Heard of the Suwanee Bass but never been fishing where they live. Thanks for sharing.

BTW is that an aluminum canoe with vinyl wrap? Does it dampen bumps and thumps? Add much weight?

OK all you pig and deer hunters, are you looking for an easy recipe for the crock pot? You could actually get some backstrap going on HI while you’re cutting up the rest of the meat and it will be ready in just a couple of hours.

Sliced backstrap – enough to fill the pot 1/2 to 3/4

1 package of onion soup mix

1 bottle of Heinz Chili Sauce

                          1 medium to large onion

In a Standard Crock Pot lay backstraps in pot, cover with onion soup mix. Chop onion and throw in on top of meat. Pour contents of Chili Sauce over all the ingredients. Add a little fresh ground pepper. Set on Hi for at least 2 hours. You do not need to stir this at all.

I have not tried it but this might also work in the original slow cooker, the dutch oven.

Pods have always been illegal in NC. I hope these things are considered like pods and struck down as well but with our new legislature, who knows what could be made legal.:(

in reply to: What's in a Name? #17346

Duncan, my real name, descended from MacRaes is Scottish and gaelic in origin-“Donacaid” meaning “Browned Warrior” (may be some other spellings).

I’m from a long line of Scots mixed in with a few English, Irish, maybe some German and there is rumored that there may be a native Tuscarora in the wood pile somewhere. This occured after the first MacRaes arrived in the Cape Fear Valley in the late 1700’s here in NC. Before that the clan and various highland clans were made up of various invading tribes mixed with the indigenous peoples. The English side of me is made up of invading Norman that ruled England for a time and can be traced back to other Germanic tribes.

I’m no expert on this but it is interesting stuff and love to hear other peoples opinions on it.

I should update my bio here as I did not give much in my original post back in 2010.

I’m a lifelong native of The Old North State. I’ve spent the last 34 years in the natural gas distribution industry where I’ve worn a few different hats from hardhats and boots on the ground to the cube farm I’m now relegated to in our Engineering Dept. So yeah retirement from that is closer than it has been. Been married almost that long as well and would not change a thing.

During all this time I contiued to practice archery sometimes with clubs and friends but also on my own. I find it relaxing to just shoot a few rounds on my home butts.

Over the years I’ve taken squirrel, whitetail deer, birds, and various fish with my trad bows. I’ve tried for bear and have always wanted to go for hogs. Western hunts have always been a dream but family has always come first.

I sometimes seem absent from this site its true, I have another affliction, fishing. So I have to divide my time between this and a fishing forum or two.

That is pretty much it. Nothing gets me fired up like some crisp fall air and turning leaves unless it is the sweet smell of pollen on a misty springtime morning with every bird in the woods competing for a mate with his song at daybreak. Turkey season is almost upon us. Good Luck and Happy Trails!

                                  Duncan
