in reply to: Sites on a recurve? #52457
sights work just fine on a recurve…
in reply to: Making arrows out of dowels #40266if you REALLY wish to make your own from dowels, get/make a spine tester, shaft straightner and grain scale.
most hardware and lumber businesses have doweling. be selective and get the straightest and most consistant in grain dowels you can find.
“making your own” arrows can be very rewarding and a great deal of fun.
over the years, i’ve made some really nice, durable, accurate wooden arrows by hand both from purchased doweling and cutting and shaping from billets of select wood. i wanted to get a Shaft Shooter, but it’s price tag was prohibiting.
leave them at the length you got them, install the points of choice and shoot them to see how they perform. you may trim off as you so desire, as you go.
i suggest you trim them in 1/2″ increments until you get the desired performance.
the shorter the shaft…the stiffer the spine…
length of the shaft and weight of point combinations are two ways to ‘tune’ the arrow to your bow/preferences.
in reply to: trad vs. compound #35811IMO…FWIW…i believe ‘trad’ will stay as popular as it now and possibly grow.
the world of compounds is a fascinating one, indeed. many prefer the technology they offer; but that technology is something that “turns me off”. especially in the “looks” department. 😯
admiditly, they are without question, faster than recurves and longbows but the cost of the gain in the speed is the loss of simplicity, the gain of weight (in hand) with the old adage “the more there is, the more there is to go wrong” in effect. 😕
speaking for myself…gimme a recurve. 😀
very few things compare with a good shot made with a wooden arrow for some reason…however…i must cast some aspersions, too.
cost became an influencing factor for me to continue to shoot the woodies like i once did; the way i lost and broke wood arrows where i live it bacame an issue, mostly breakage.
in reply to: One piece or Takedown whats your favorite? #31240i prefer the one piece
HOWEVER…the two/three piece has it’s advantages
easier for traveling
extra sets of limbs if desired
attachment of bow quivers is normally much easier due
to “bolt” feature
heavier in mass weight in handle (normally)i have and like both…:roll::D
in reply to: Which bow? #31235wes wallace, bob lee…ford…chevy…vanilla…choclate
