in reply to: How would we rate! #51679
It’s easy to imagine that paleolithic hunter-gatherer cultures had no sense of “ethics” as we know them, but… I have had the privilege of spending a lot of the with the Bushmen of the Kalahari who live that lifestyle as close to anyone on earth today. Remarkably, they have elaborately codified rituals regarding the “right” and “wrong” of hunting in various ways. From a Western point of view, analysis suggests that these boil down to ways of avoiding conflict, maintaining game populations, and so on… but perhaps that’s how “ethics” came to be in the first place? Interesting question… Don
in reply to: Kustom King #51672KK and 3R are excellent outfits and I have dealt with both for years. The USPS is another story. Let’s not assign blame where it doesn’t belong. Don
in reply to: Art with a Capital A #51665When a traditional bow makes it to MOMA, we have arrived! (No compounds, I presume.) Don
in reply to: Traditional Bowhunting Magazine #50599Thanks to all who chimed in to express their support. As I’ve said before, I write for a lot of magazines, but TBM is special. Nothing else like it out there. Don
in reply to: Nugent, redux #43858A brief response… Stay tuned for the editorial in the upcoming O/N issue. Don
in reply to: Is camo necessary? #17126Simple answer: No. I agree with Jason. I still wear some because quiet hunting clothing tends to come in camp, but I really couldn’t care less about it unless I’m hunting turkeys. The old style plaid hunting shirts work just fine. Filson still makes them I believe. That’s where i got my last shirts. Don
in reply to: How Often Do You Practice? #17122Not enough, to be honest. Used to be, it didn’t matter. Now it does. I’m turning over a new leaf. Don
in reply to: Wisconsin deer politics #33492Rather than get bogged down in state politics, I’d suggest taking a step back and looking at the big picture. As I believe I’ve pointed out here before, I’ve been fielding an ever increasing amount of hate mail labeling many of the principles we depend upon “socialism,” often with specific regard to something we’ve run in the magazine. Targets include public land, public hunting, and the North American Model. Many of these read as if they came out of the same copying machine. The fact is that many powerful interests see big $$$ to be made from the privatization of public resources, and they are using current anti-government sentiment to advance their cause. I would suggest that we all remain vigilant against these attempts by a few to profit from the destruction of hundreds of years of American tradition. Don
in reply to: Aerial Target Thrower Ideas? #33478I remember reviewing an article on this subject by someone who had designed just such a thing. This was some years ago, and I cannot remember the name or contact. The piece didn’t make it into the magazine. As I recall, he had a video and a website. You might try an Internet search. Sorry I can’t help you more. Don
in reply to: Hunting Bigfoot in Texas #29181Dave–As you may recall I once told you a story about an encounter I had with Texas law enforcement back in the day. (I think we were drinking Margaritas and sending the tab to TJ at the time.)Anyway, I’m pretty sure that was the arresting officer. Best as I can remember. It was during the 60s. Don
in reply to: My kind of bowhunting #29179Hate to tell you Darryl, but as a physician and your editor you are already well on your way down that slippery slope along with the rest of us. As for the plantar fasciitis, TJ is welcome to stop by for a free injection any time (even though the last one damn near killed him.) don
in reply to: "The Grey" #29177Come on, folks. Anyone who lives with a vegetarian who wishes him luck when he goes hunting deserves our full support. I know–my daughter is a “vegetarian” who loads up a cooler full of venison every time she comes home. Don
Dave raises a significant concern that I’ve heard before from other excellent bowhunters. While the name makes sense–look up the dictionary definition of “professional”– it still causes lots of confusion. I’ll suggest that the matter be reviewed. Of course, if a change is made there would be no more “PBS”. Then what? The “OFBS” (Old Farts Bowhunting Society)? Don
in reply to: Wisconsin deer politics #29164My oh my. Sounds like we need some facts. Can someone with boots on the ground in Wisconsin provide some input? Don
PBS is the only national bowhunting organization to which I belong. Although there is no official policy to that effect, PBS is overwhelmingly traditional, around 90% as Larry indicated. PBS has taken and continues to take principled positions on many issues of importance to all of us. It is a tremendous resource for anyone with a question to ask, or anyone planning a hunt in a new area. The level of “boots on the ground” experience is remarkable, and the biannual banquets feel like sitting around a campfire with old friends (and this opinion is from someone who really isn’t a “banquet” person.) Can’t recommend it highly enough. Don
