Yep, there are lots of valid variations on the theme, depending on personal pref and circumstance. But in general, the idea of quartering without gutting is the useful point here, no matter how we individually handle bones and hide.

The most apt response I’ve heard so far, from a local friend I sent it to, is “Wow, that’s the perfect method for high-grading roadkill!” Yes, esp. if it’s illegal where you live — cut and run. 😛

Dennis — My personal top head right now is the Tuffhead, either 225 or 300 — I put a 225 plumb through a bull from a 54# longbow last fall. But it’s a glue-on so your friend would have to add an adapter, at least 75 grains for 300 total, which I can’t imagine any pulley shooter going along with. So I would agree with Scout on the 175 Brown Bear. Three years ago I killed an elk with one and it was still sharp after. And they are screw-in so a 175 is a 175. Since we’re talking big speed here, I’d definitely go with a long narrow head and avoid all fatties. Nor would I, personally, use a 4-blade on elk for fear of striking bone, esp. ribs going in, and loosing way too much horsepower. Whatever, and whatever it’s shot with, for elk it needs to be tough tough tough. IMHO

Scout and R2 — It would indeed appear that some entrepreneur has applied camo to medical stretch wrap to invent a “new” product. I have a new roll of the med stuff in the medicine cabinet and may just play around with it per your suggestions. Can you slip a strap-on bow quiver over it, or do you have to leave a bare spot on each limb for that? Thanks, dave

STeve — right after I posted that, for some reason the site “locked up.” Talked to the owner, Eric Temple, and he fixed it. You should be able to get it now.

Anthony — They’ve been talking about a Monkey WRench Gang flick for decades. Ed joked long before he died that “I’ll go broke if they ever make this film,” as he was getting a nice annual retainer “on option.” Countless scripts have been written and rejected, and at one time of another it has been under option by Rbt. Redford, Carroll Ballard (Never Cry Wolf) and last I heard, Woody Harrelson. I’m out of that loop now and haven’t a clue. But unless it’s done as a serious comedy-action flik it will suck. Ed wasn’t a hunter and really disliked a lot of what he saw down in AZ and in UT under the guise of hunting (so do it), yet loved to eat elk when visiting and called me “a gentleman elk hunter,” whatever that means.

Well, since we’re talking visual entertainment here in the boring deptsh of winter, some tradbow related and some not, I might as well pass this along since it’s easy enough to ignore it. Yesterday was Edward Abbey’s birthday, and in celebration a friend sent me this link to one of the better bio-films about him, with lots of gorgeous SW scenery, plenty of Abbey footage in various modes, and interviews with his friends, including a couple of bit parts by me, always embarrassing when I see it now. But it’s a good flick anyhow for Abbey fans and anyone interested in learning a bit more about this southwestern cult icon who changed so many livesand the West, for the better. http://vimeo.com/27417586

Gary — I’ll soon find out about the strap-on steps’ reliability and safety, as I’m slowly assembling a collection of used ones. From comments on this thread, personal notes, and general lack of their availability new, it would seem that they didn’t prove popular, for various reasons, and have largely faded away. One complaint is that they are not stable side to side and thus “wobbly.” From the ones I have so far it seems this is a problem of design, as they have a sort of bar at the bottom, whereas spikes, a toothy pattern, would make them more stable side to side. So I have some custom grinding to do. And my thanks to all who have contributed opinions, info and in a few cases, steps.

So far as reading on stand, for me boredom has never ever been a problem. Maybe because I mostly hunt in the woods where you can’t see very far so you have to be constantly on high alert, hunting largely by intense listening for sounds that could indicate approaching game. And there’s always something interesting going on out there with nongame species and birds. To me it’s like watching a slow-paced but spellbinding movie. And too, I wear magnifying glasses to read and would have to put the book down, take off the glasses, and pick up my bow, etc., when I frequently have only a split-second’s warning of approaching game. I can see circumstances where reading would not be a distraction from hunting, but that’s not the case with me. Though heaven knows I need and crave to spend more time reading. Lots of ways to enjoy the experience out there. Thanks, Dave

Scout — do you have an internet link for this stuff? Is it reusable? I’ve always been happy with the bow socks, the loose kind. No tape et cetera can provide the non-glare camo of cloth, it protects the finish of the bow, and can be washed, etc. I have also used spray-on camo paint, which came off easily with acetone. Lots of workable alternatives.

Hi Doug and welcome. Yes, PMs are the way to start, and from there you can always exchange personal emails and/or phones. Thanks for offering to help another hunter. I’ve never hunted the Flattops myself but have explored a bit around the “base” area and it’s gorgeous and loaded with wildlife. I hear good things about it so often, but almost always related to pack-in hunts in wilderness, where the motorized mobs can’t swarm you. Dave

Bruce — Do you mean Zombie Nation with Woody Harrelson? If so, I’m with you that it’s a hoot … right there on my list of favorite frivolous film entertainment with Arnie’s classic Predator and of course most of Cheech y Chong. If there is also a Zombieland, then I’ve missed something … or else you’ve already hopped a few pints today. 😛

Steve, indeed that unfortunate parallel of Neeson’s film and personal losses was brought out in the NPR interview.

To get more back toward bowhunting, a while back my wife watched a flick about some female assassin who used a bow, a stickbow I think. Anyone see that one? Any good, so far as being realistic in the archery arena? I wouldn’t watch such a movie, but I might speed through and hi-grade the “bowhunting” parts if they’re any good. Like our resident Hammersmith 😛 (many of my Danish ancesters also were horseshoe makers) points out, sort of, it’s winter and life is slow to the point of silliness.

                                Bruce — you are a show-off and braggart! :P:lol:

Seriously, that’s a lovely hunk of bow. How about a picture of it strung, and/or better yet a picture of you shooting it? My first custom bow, oh so long ago it now seems, was a simple Robertston Hill-style longbow, at the opposite extreme from this beauty of yours.

                                Congrats! Dave
