Congratulations on your self-promotion, Cottonwood! I hope that longbow shoots as pretty as she looks. But was it necessary for you to have such a negative influence on your son in the deal? :P:lol: But maybe he’s still of training-wheel age?:lol: It’s all good. Enjoy, dave

Golly friends, 3 days later and still you’re making my day. Deeply touching and valued, and the appreciation is mutual, believe me. Now I’m off for my semi-annual VA physical check-up where they’ll predictably tell me I’m in fantastic shape for an old fart but should quit smoking and drinking. 🙄 I always respond, “Moderation in all things … including the pleasures I give up.”:lol: Thanks guys, and gal. dave

Twohairs — if we’re talking the top of the skull, you have two more than me! :P:roll::oops: Saves a fortune on haircuts.

I’m 64 Chris, and indeed I can run circles around anyone of any age … so long as they’re standing still in one spot!:P Thanks again to all for the good wishes. No hate mail so far. Slow day at home — typing, working in the garden, dreaming of my new Shrew now in the mail. Elk steaks and gin-tonic tonight. Wife finally remembered it was my BD at a little past noon when the topics of VA benefits and Social Security came up. Ho-ho, and she’s still in diapers at only 55. Never too old to rob the cradle, I always say. 😉 dave

Nice fish, Chris. And it’s refreshing to see one “field dressed” for the table. I’m a life member of TU but don’t fish anymore as often as I should. Figure I’ll get back to it when I’m too old to hunt. 😀

Worst turkey year ever here. Long winter, deep snow, birds widely dispersed, bad winterkill esp. on toms and I haven’t seen a jake here in two years (my target of choice as they eat so much better than big toms). Been out several times a week since early April and had only one tom in shotgun range and he wouldn’t offer a longbow shot. Now the hens are on nest and no gobbling whatsoever. But the exercise and time alone in the woods has been good medicine and I’ll keep slugging through Sunday with the season ends. Ron LeClair shipped my new Shrew longbow today so with good performance from the USPS I’ll have it to close the season with. If you get tired of eating trout, try smoking ’em. Hard to get lit but great flavor!:P dave

in reply to: Heavy Judo points #46170

For wood arrows the WoodyWeights might do the trick, depending on how hard your “stumps” are and at what angle they impact. I testing I’ve intentionally shots WWs into thick-barked ponderosa pine from an angle and had the WW’s break from the points at the glue joint, and also had the shaft break behind the head/WW at a higher percentage than without WWs. But then, I’ve also had some of them hold together fine. Worth a try. Cleaning out the male and female contact points with acetone is critically important before gluing. Without checking I’m think you can now by some fairly heavy HexPoints, which are my pref for stumping and small game over Judos, and a lot cheaper. dp

Well much thanks to you all. As one “friend” recently quipped, everyone is happy to see my birthdays come, thinking they’re another year closer to getting rid of me! Don’t count on it. The running joke here so far today is that my wife has totally spaced that today is my BD. I think it’s funny. She doesn’t think much at all.:roll::D Bless you all, dave

Moderation in all things … except buying new Shrews! No, she doesn’t yet know. Please don’t tell. 8) anon

Steve Mc– We’d love to visit our mutual hunting buddy and your neighbor Alex at his digs someday, so it could happen. Never toured New England and we could start there and eat our way up to Canada through tons of crab and lobster. Someday …

Ah yes, health first and foremost. But how about the possibility of engaging your passion — in Ed’s case, his passion is to try to help us all be the most efficient and humane killers possible — as part of the healing thereapy? Best of both worlds. 😀 But perhaps that’s selfish thinking on my part. In any event it’s GREAT to hear from you here, Ed, even if just a few words. This is definitely an arena where your direct mentorship inspires. Dave:roll:

OK Paddy, let’s try this again with a few self-edits:

What we’re really looking forward to is not your “first second bow,” but your “second first bow.” Not as easy as it sounds! :P:P

Meanwhile while building the shooting muscles, be careful not to blow out a shoulder, as I did by over-practicing several years ago with a bow that wasn’t too heavy for normal practice and hunting but tore me up when I got carried away … and I never got close to 100 shots a day. Forced me to drop 10 pounds forever. When I was a runner, I ran too much and too fast and ruined a knee. When I was a weight lifter (the good old iron kind), I lifted too much too often and blew out a shoulder. When I was a whitewater kayaker (aged mid-40s when I took it up,) I did 100 Eskimo rolls nonstop to show off (to whom, I have no idea) … and there went the other shoulder. Now all I have left is walking and archery in the mid-50# category. Point is, through life we either tend to not do enough and then suffer the pains and losses of softness and premature decay … or we try to do too much too fast and hear things in our body go “Pop! Snap!” and are crippled in that way. The wise person of exercises regularly but modestly is the rare being who is able to keep going late into life (barring bad genes). Ah, but as “they” say, “Moderation in all things.” I’ve always taken the “all” part to include moderation itself. :(:oops: “dave2old” (Whoever invented the original happy face and all the rest since, should be shot with a dull broadhead from a weak bow at a great distance. Mia culpas)

I really wanted to go but it didn’t work out so I bought myself a third Shrew to ease the pain. 🙄 More on that soon. There are several new friends from this site I’d love to meet, while also seeing again “old” friends I’ve met at Kalamazoo and several state banquets but never see otherwise. Here is what I’ll do for you who are going: A secret ceremonial anti-rain dance every day! Lucky bums. dave :D8)

Chris — haven’t seen you here lately with the normal regularity. You been gone hunting I hope.

Pothunter — thanks for the great historical calendar! It’s always amazing how much folks here know about a wide variety of issues aside from archery and hunting . I used to think I knew a lot about bowhunting, if nothing else, but right now the turkeys are proving me wrong (again). dave 😛

No problem, George! That’s why I don’t wear knickers! 😀 I just came back from trying to kill/harvest/euthenize a turkey but as usual they have me outsmarted. Doesn’t take much. Dave
