Vitale — first and foremost, we’re glad you’re here! Thanks for posting. But alas, I’m left to wonder what’s wrong with the shelf? Is it particular bow, or rather than you’re not accustomed to shooting off the shelf? I’m sure there are folks here who will offer alternatives, but a vast majority of trad archers love shooting off the shelf. A bit part of the lovely simplicity of trad archery is that everything is solid and not to break, fall off or etc. That’s also why we mostly shoot feathers rather than plastic vanes — because they fold up going over the shelf and provide better accuracy. So my advice is to work with the shelf for a while and see if you can come to appreciate it. But then, maybe I totally misunderstand your question. In any event, welcome aboard. Dave

Welcome Bone! Always good to add new voices to our conversations, as we each have personal experience and opinions of value. Dave

Craig — I won’t be able to attend this year but this shoot comes highly recommended. Set among the aspens in prime CO elk country, very well organized, lots of nice folks. Only potential downsides are same for most outdoor shoots: most camping is in the open so it can get really hot during the days, mosquitoes and of course the chance or rain. But the courses wind through the woods and lots of fun. Wish I could be there. Dave

Limb — My opinion is based on years of using both 2- and 3-blade broadheads. With a bow that stout you can probably rely on good penetration on deer with just about any solid broadhead. For bigger game I definitely recommend 2-blades. And then there is heavy bone. On elk shoulders I’ve seen 3-blades literally bounce back out, and I’ve had two-blades bend and break off at the tip (and then bounce or fall out). I personally won’t shoot any broadhead that doesn’t have at least a Rockwell hardness of 50, and last I heard neither of the heads you mention is there. The easier a head is to sharpen, the softer the steel and thus the greater the likelihood of failure (to one degreeor another) on heavy bone hits. The way I view it, there are SO many heads available today that fly well, why settle for soft steel? The old problems with hard steel being brittle have largely been solved by thickening the blades, which was difficult in the days when we all wanted to shoot 125 grains, but is easily done now that we are learning the many benefits of heavier heads. Again, for deer you’re likely just fine with either of the heads you name. My opinion. dp

Arrow weight,FoC, broadhead choice and other arrow setup issues collectively have more to do with penetration than does bow poundage. But CO’s 35# rule is an unethical abomination and I remind them of that every chance I get. It’s the result of lobbying and politics and has nothing to do with reality. Disgusting. dp

Back Of Point shaft length, that is, the standard way of measuring a shaft, from bottom of nock to back of point.

Your 682 arrow setup has stats real close to my elk setup for last year. Indeed, they do hit with authority! Wish I could shoot that good. dave

The growing herd of “Outhouse Channel” hunting and fishing programs show outdoor sport at its worst to the nonhunting public. They feed and fire-up the antis, and lead young hunters down the wrong path. We should publicly disavow them at every opportunity. I for one, for years now, have boycotted all advertisers of these abominations. It’s not just the weapons they use but the way they go about hunting, where they hunt, and their macho attitudes toward the game. Good for you, Cottonwood. dave

Thanks for the alert, Rick. As I recall you out-shot me at last year’s rendezvous. Anyone interested, you find more info and maps at http://www.coloradobackcountryhunters.org Event runs today through Sunday morning. Dave p

                          John,

                          NO! I got that one!

Apparently there’s more than one “best looking, smartest, most understanding women that ever walked the planet.” 😀

                          Lucky us, eh? 😉

Steve — thanks for sharing your unfortunate fix with us. That takes courage! No need to say “goodbye,” but just “I’ll likely be out of touch for a while … looking forward to better times and will be back then.”

We too are looking forward to your better times! Everything passes … everything. Hang in. I’ve sent a PM. Best cheers, dave petersen

I like to scan through the new issues, ads, articles, photos, the minute they appear on this website — viewed on my office computer’s big screen. But I save the serious reading for the real magazine. I enjoy both. I don’t even see how you could read it on a tiny screen. dave

Unless you have a sloppy release, it seems to me the string should go where it feels most natural. For me, it’s just ahead of the crease, not in it. And while we’re on this topic — good one, Patrick, that I don’t recall seeing before — on releases when I know instantly it’s a sloppy release and the shot will be off, almsot every time, if I think about it in instant mental replay, it’s the bottom finger that hangs a bit and causes problems. So I’ve developed the habit, good or bad, of letting a bit of pressure off that finger at full draw, which puts most of the pressure on just the middle finger. Give me a cleaner release but I doubt it would work with a 70# bow. Also, I guess there are thinner and thicker finger pads, but all I’ve ever used, granted it was half a century ago almost, were fairly thick and stiff, like rawhide. The advantage was they protected your string fingers. The disadvantage was that they basically had no crease, that is no keen sense of feel between fingers and string. As always, whatever works, works (so long as you don’t get caught). dave

Mike — My bows are 55, 53 and 51# and I shoot the same 680 grains out of all three (and some even heavier woodies). Read Ashby’s latest update, posted here in the Ashby library, which shows (along with previous reports) that the lighter the bow draw weight, the more positive difference in penetration heavy arrows and high FoC make. Besides, it’s something fun to do, these experiments, when we can’t be hunting. dave
