in reply to: What type of bow does everyone shoot #58869
Browning always made lovely boys. George, how many bows at a time, on average, do you own? For those who can afford it, I think collecting older “classic” bows — all the ones I couldn’t afford when younger — would be a really fascinating hobby, as each model would have its own history. And it’s certainly cheaper than collecting classic guitars! dave
in reply to: Ultimate wood arrows #53849Mr. P — “making” arrows is cake. Start with good shafts. Buy a $50 fletcher (mine didn’t cost that much). Glue feathers and nock on the back, a point on the front … you got it! 😀
I love it. Of course you can do the same with carbons, but hey … 8)in reply to: Need a new hunting recurve any suggestions? #53822Shrew Li’l Favorite. It’s a short longbow that shoots better than most long longbows. My 2 scents. 😀 dave
in reply to: Ultimate wood arrows #53290T — I have met Rick and seen his work and can’t agree more with you: he’s a fine man, one of us, and a top-end arrowsmith artist. A career as an aeronautical engineer no doubt adds some insight to his designs. You have my thanks too, Fletcher. dave
in reply to: Grouse season starts tomorrow!!! #53285WS — thanks for the reminder, as grouse and fall turkey open here today also and I need to stick a blunt in my quiver when I go out tonight, and a turkey diaphragm in a pocket. We have only blue grouse here in the mountains and after all these years I’m still struggling against the urge to shoot at them sitting in trees after busting a bunch. Once I dead-centered one with a broadhead and even with that he managed to sail off into a canyon, never seen again. Usually I miss even when they’re on the ground, but once got two in a row that way. Very high arrow loss/cost for the meat, but it’s one more element of a great elk hunting. They’re already bugling here! 😀 dp
in reply to: HOW SHARP IS SHARP ENOUGH? #52137Watch for a pair of excellent articles by Doc Ed and Sharpster in an upcoming issue of TBM, covering why sharpness is important and how to attain it. Thanks Ed and Ron. 😉 dave
in reply to: In my woods…… #51180Steve — Is this sung to the tune of “In My Room” by the Bleachboys? 😀 dave
Konrad — I am no archery guru … more like a perpetual new-new. If your questions refers to target archery, I’d say whatever works. It’s easy and fun to experiment and find out your best stance in different situations. If for hunting, I do most of my practice kneeling or sitting, as that is how I almost always am positioned for shots on game. Sorry we seem short of guru’s here. Where is Mr. Ferguson when we need him? dp
in reply to: Elk season starts next week #47815Good luck to you, too, Bill. The CO seasons open tomorrow. I head to “deer camp” (the back of my pickup) this afternoon. There are elk up there also, but I really enjoy chasing those big bucks who look like 5×5 elk and run in bunches this time of year near timberline. The elk will start singing in a week or so and then all else is forgot and I have to fight the urge to urinate on myself and roll in the mud. 😛 One friend backpacked into the wilderness yesterday. Two more have their two-tent camp all set up and went in last night for no good reason other than “we can’t wait.” It’s all fun. dave
in reply to: El Grande flight tests #46668Smiley and Brett — You guys have a setup I sure wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of, even were I an elephant. By using wood shafts this year I am sacrificing FoC; way down in the teens. If I used a hundred-grain steel insert and stuck those same heads on a carbon I’d instantly be in the high 20s with you. I did that last year with Brown Bears, 26+%, and may do it this year for elk but I’m starting, tomorrow (!!:D!) on timberline muley bucks and crave some time with woodies, like in the old days. Should be more than accurate. I have the El Grandes down to a 23-degree edge bevel. dave
in reply to: Who makes a good pair of pants these days??? #45487Good question, Steve — I walked right into that one! 😯 While an examination of the sins of Walmart vs. Cabelas is a legitimate discussion, I have no desire to further such an off-topic and potentially “hot” topic on the public forums, here right before hunting seasons when we’re all hi-wired and happy. So I’ll send you a PM in response to your absolutely valid question. Dave
in reply to: Who makes a good pair of pants these days??? #44502Robin — My reason for baggy drawers (and shirts) isn’t so practical as Patrick’s … in a word, “comfort.” I just move bettter and seem to fatigue less rapidly when hunting and hiking (often the same) in loose garmentation. d
in reply to: Interview with Dave Peterson #44497Thanks, Nut … but what makes you think I’m not an aging rocker?:P If I could have hair, I would. If I could have Ted’s hair, complete with fresh scalp, even better! 😈
And thanks to everyone for your kind feedback. I especially enjoy folks who say, “Now, I don’t agree with you on everything, but …” That suggests that rather than just singing to the choir, or just annoying people who don’t agree with me on much of anything, rather, we are actually communicating. That’s a real compliment for a guy with my job description: trouble maker. 😛 Dave
in reply to: First group EVER with wood arrows #44490Patrick — if you’re buying shafts from a good supplier, you shouldn’t have many that need straightening. If you’re buying finished arrows from a good arrowsmith, there should be none that aren’t dead straight (at first, at least). But looks like you have enough feathers on there to cure most all ills, and are doing your best to get a Robin Hood so you have an excuse to make more arrows, or buy more as the case may be. Fun, ain’t it? Dave
