in reply to: How many times per week do you hunt? #24705
Five to six on average. Societal obligations are synthetic and overrated. Not to mention…a lot of people I know, family and otherwise, make good use of the venison (birds, small game, etc… Fish too, for that matter).
in reply to: Bare Fingers #40552I don’t wear an armguard except with loose sleeves. Then I wear the top of an old wool sock…
I try to shoot a few shots a week bare fingered, in the event that I forget or lose a glove I can confidently manage the one accurate (or one inaccurate and one accurate) shot that I might need. I like the idea of shooting only bare and toyed with it once, but punted it after a month or two. I expect that with a little more dedication it would be fine. Gloves are a relatively new thing in the archery world, mainly for we modern softies.
I did notice when I was bare fingering that, until I got sore at least, it did tighten up my group a good bit. Nothing wrong with that.
in reply to: No place like home #40385Strong work!! At least half my deer and more than that of my hunting comes from out the back door. I know that isn’t possible for everyone, but where it is possible, it makes good sense in every way.
in reply to: After the Harvest #36699Here in arKansas, I quarter mine and age the quarters in the fridge for a week +/- when it’s too hot (always) to hang them outside. And it keeps the stray dogs from fussing around in the yard all night.
in reply to: Warm Weather Whitetails #35313I am not a fan of hunting in the heat (at least for deer. Dove…different story.), but I will do it. Down here the past few years, if I waited for cold weather, they’d be all shot out and nocturnal before I ever set foot in the field. We haven’t had a winter to speak of since I moved back to arKansas. Pretty much skipped from late summer to mid Spring every year. It’s a little unsettling.
But in short, I will hunt in the heat, but it’s less than the ideal experience.

All it takes is time and money. 🙄
Actually, I do quite well with time overall with the relatively headache free job I have. But that time is all evenings and weekends. Not huge loose ended blocks. That’s the goal someday, but not there yet. I appreciate the offer and hope to use it someday.
in reply to: AR opener… #34182Heh heh…Yep. Lots of deer, mostly about the size of carry on luggage. But a lot of them, fun, and tasty. One of these days I would love to try some Couse though (as well as lots of other species.) But, for now, the home turf and the occasional trip to visit folks/hunt in Kansas is about all I can swing. It’s good though.
in reply to: Coffee on the Rocks #34092With scenery like that all coffee will be great. Nice basket quiver too. That needs to be one of my next projects.
I like the idea of this liquid coffee concentrate. I haven’t tried it yet but it sounds promising. Good tip.
in reply to: Coffee on the Rocks #34030Sounds great. I’m a coffee fiend myself. Not a connoisseur, but a fan. Good coffee is better than bad coffee, but bad coffee is better than no coffee.
Have you tried the coffee bags? It’s like tea, but it’s coffee. Heat water and let it steep/brew? I have used them quite a bit in the woods and weeds. I remain a little skeptical of instant, although they have really made some progress the past few years. Credit where it is due.
in reply to: AR opener… #33493Thanks all. Appreciate it.
Dave,
No Couse here, although I would LOVE to hunt them sometime. I think you’re thinking AZ (Arizona). Here in AR (arKansas -my personal spelling), we only have regular white tails. And I will admit to having some planted plots around. Not tiny focused ones, but food crops all the same. But yeah, I do make everything and try to sneak up on or at least ambush as many as I can. I usually get around one a year from a stand. This is my biggest ground buck with a bow though. And so far, he’s tasty. The tenderloins were great!
Well boiled down so far…
1) wind
2) sound. Stalk in or after rain when you can.
3) sight. Use cover, face paint, etc.
4) some good luck, karma, mojo… Whatever you call it.
5) keep practicing. Most still hunts/stalks with stic bows don’t kill game, but practice can help.
in reply to: Review–Trophy Ridge Fred Bear Razorhead #9507I don’t suppose they make a 200 grain two blade glue on? 😉
in reply to: Neat little story #27631Interesting and well done. I just like/shared it on my FB wall and, sadly, I was only the second Like that article has received. It isn’t getting a lot of play among the conventional hook-and-bullet crowd.

in reply to: Just finished new ERC longbow… #19576ERC is Easter Red Cedar. It’s actually a juniper species and makes a great bow when you can find a piece that will work.
