you bring up a very good point of different game animals reaction to level of scent. Very dependent on their experience and frequency of exposure to our/other hunters threat.

Yes I use [scent free]baby wipes nowadays. I use a solar shower if I don’t have to pack it far [truck camping],or just bath in the creek [if available not too cold]. I wash all my clothes/gear with scent free soap and pack em in bags w/cedar chips.

The least you are heard/seen/and especially smelled the better off you are,and keeping your “nose in the wind” may be the best advise!imho ” The way of the Leopard”

            Mcuiska –
I totally concur — level and distance – I don’t know exactly what it is — – I was in The big bend of Texas for all of last month -at a large ranch with a lot of Javelinas [ no one lives here for months at a time] — a bunch of them jpigs – snuck into the back yard – I tried to run a stalk on them- wind in my face, forgot it would abutt against the lodge and reflect back. Just as I was closing [ 20yds – jpigs are small] they got the scent and were gone — haha – after all this time I should have known better/ or at least planned ahead !

I thought that most of our game would be similiar [and understand the training factor of the K9 — any other trained hunting dog] realistically in the field – what we have to work against in scenting ability. I have always heard Pigs were best with Bears a close second. I have been intriqued by this as I do not smell well but know people who can do it extremely well. it is probably the tactic we should be most carefull with.
Bears are most difficult Imho —

I also will continue and try to remain as odorless as posible – cut down the range of detection, hopefully. I started Bowhunting in 69/70 and one of the recomendations to cut our odor was Zinc tablets which I used. I don’t know if it did any good, made me feel more ghostlike —haha

I have hunted Rocky Mtn Elk many times, but not Roosevelts. Patrick Meitins – Bowhunting Modern elk [ compound guy – but says he is switching over to trad bow more now]. Pat’s book [has a chapter on roosevelts] is quite good and Honest! he say’s Hunting Roosevelt’s tactics are as Mentioned by Mr Borbon.

My sentiments exactly – but interesting to see a test. I would be curious to know what difference in acuity of dogs scenting ability vs deer/ elk ?

Great pix of the lion! Most of the time I have seen them, they are using concealment to full advantage, like in this photograph – it is as if they know where the camera is![ I think they do]Good thing they don’t hunt us very much or we would mostly get eaten. they are the best “stillhunter”.

I have always made my own [ learned in the service ] if you go to http://www.theghilliesuits.com/ghilliesuitkits.html they have directions and materials for you to do same. they work well as long as they blend with the terrain you are hunting in, and you bind/up or keep them short so as not to hamper the string. they are basically strips of burlap [ contrasting colors]sewn to backing – coat/pants/poncho-in their original format. They come in a 1000 variations now –

Looks kinda like a Grizzly “El Grande”. Which brings up my question — I can’t seem to find any. I used them years ago and would like to again. Tried 3rs and Kustom King, didn’t have any 160gr –up. Are they still being made?

I agree with Mr Graf, it has been many years since I hunted Ground “hogs”, but the small game heads did not work well at all. I eventually used Bear Razorheads {my Big Game BHead at the time}, which solved the problem.

Dave – I figured that might be the case, looking at the ser# set up. I have 2 {CH’s}, both starting with G — one built in mid 09 and one a year later. I like the way they look, feel, and shoot. On the list for another. In for a penny in for a pound.
                              Thanks

Dave – I buy used bows on occasion. How does an individual determine whether a shrew in question was built by Greg Coffey?

All the books you mention are excellent.
My “go to” book for all things Traditional is T. J. Conrads – Traditonal Bowhunter’s Handbook. Good chapters on shooting and practice. A similiar book [but a little dated] is Sam Fadala’s – Traditional Archery.
                                  Different but interesting is Timeless Bowhunting: The Art, The Science, & the Spirit by Roy S. Marlow. Although this book talks about all Bows -Tradbow [ quite a bit]and “Modern”, The discussion of Bow PBR {Point Blank Range – “Depth of Kill”}
                                  Is Intriquing.
