I have carried a firearm/s most of my adult life, due to my Job/s, and still do. That being said I sometimes do not take one when Bowhunting { carry a BIG knife though -haha}. Mostly to maintain the More primitive mindset of that endeavor [IE, I am not the senior predator in the woods without my modern ordinance]. One has a tendancy to “Slink” about more without.

In some places and situations I still do – Mr Petersons 1st post is spot on! Having a firearm allows one to handle “Dicey situations” with the confidence not to have to resort to their use.

Mostly I carry a light 38/357 w/ ammo that has suffecient penetration to handle bigger critters. If in the North Country [ grizz ] I carry a S&W Mountain Gun 44 Mag.

Like Mr Thomas says — the only “Dicey Situation” [ with wild critters] I have run into in the woods was with a Black Bear.

I was scouting for elk west of “Jewet Gap”* in the Gila SW NM [ leopold country]. I was working towards a saddle going thru a narrow canyon that looked “Beary”. 2 cubs scrambled up a pine and their mother “false charged” me popping her teeth. She stopped 10yds out. I talked to her in a LOUD calm voice and slowly worked away and uphill – she was slightly downhill from me. I was Carrying a Colt SAA 45 with heavy handloads which definitely helped my demeanor thru that “dicey situation”.

I am like most posts here. I generally hunt alone. I currently have a good friend who sometimes can make the hunts and it is great fun. He is similiar in style and outlook to me. Of course there are others of whom that cannot be said, that are no longer invited.

My Father is probably my best hunting compadre. Over the years we have learned to move in concert, and have many times successfully accomplished short pushes [ slow drives / movements]to include my first Wt Buck many yrs ago. He is now unable to shoot much/well due to shoulder problems {86}but still loves to go to the woods. He drops me off on one end of roadless areas and I work my way to a pick up point. Allows me to check a lot of ground without backtracking. we still do pushes with him as the driver —

Won’t be the same when he moves on. The interesting part of this is he was not a hunter to start, became one because I was—-

I also get cut on my bow hand if I get too close to the shelf with right wing. Why, I mostly shoot left wing – although I have and still shoot rt wg – just reminds me to position my bow hand correctly. I have seen no difference in how they shoot [for me anyway]

                  Great post guys –thanks–

Brings Back fond memories. I visited and hunted there a number of times and enjoyed it immensely! Thought about living there when I was younger — but life got in the way.

Need to go back to fish and hunt again.

                    Doesn’t bore me any { hunted there late 80s}

                    — love to hear stories of the last Frontier. Did you all go there as a group? 60s “back to the Land” or just for the fun of it?

It was my understanding[from local explanation] wherever there was a lot of “Grizz” “Brownies” there were not many Black Bear and Vice versa. This seemed to hold true in my limited experience. [ Grizz ran the black Bear off —]

I had thought about living there also, but unfortunately didn’t go for it. Should have done it –Just for the experience!

                      Dave & Sagebrush —

Good video for folks not familiar with the technique { looks like he is using a “leatherman type tool” which at least with the one’s I have had, can be made quite sharp}. I also do, as you both do, in lightening the load further for pack out { deboning specifically}. I first heard of this as “Alaskan Quartering” { while hunting there}, I would presume to keep the great bears from finding you while in the process,as it is quick and skips the mess & smell of gutting. A good technique anywhere, but especially in “Grizz” country.

If you have Med friends who could give you some [ med stretch tape] you can probably dye or color it. I have only seen the med stuff in blue. You can strap a bow quiver to it no problem.

I really like the protection / and noise dampening [ hit the bow against blind/stand]

as you say most “bow tape” is still “shiny”. I have used bow sleeves which are better [ less reflective ].

I really like this Camo form Protective Camoflage wrap – it protects the bow and is trully nonreflective. It is a wrap, not Tape as it is stretchy and adhers to itself [ sort of like velcro without the noise]. It looks to me like it was developed from the current e room bandages. It is semi -reusable [ I imagine it will eventually lose it’s elasticity]I have not tried to wash it.

Google up — McNett Camo Form Protective Camoflage Wrap.

I have seen it at Gibsons [hardware] Sportsmans Warehouse – Amazon etc.

I mentioned this on the other thread — this stuff works great and is not “tape” [ IE sticky ]it is a camo version of the self adhering bandages used by hospitals. It is called Camo Form — comes in about 25 variations of camo. I’ve used it on my expensive bows w/ no problems

Absolutely Gorgeous bow — great poundage — I wish I had seen it, I would have bought it myself – haha

I really like Juniper limbs [ have it in a Centaur] Who would have thought such an ubiquitus tree [ in our neck of the woods NM for me ] could be such a beautiful bow wood! I like the thought of hunting in my area with wood from a tree that grows there ——–
