in reply to: Last Colorado Grizzly #36653
Dave –
I recall that wiseman story in the news at the time.
It made one wonder if their still might be a few Grizz running around the wilderness in the SW. Spiced up some of my wilderness adventures! especially in North western NM.

in reply to: new to archery too #36644Hi Gblue86-
Trad archery is great fun, and a shooting sport one can easily do in the yard [as your photos show].
To echo fattony77 feather fletch is best for tradbow arrows.
I would recommend the Traditional Bowhunter’s Handbook by TJ Conrads – great primer [ even if you don’t hunt] excellent reference for trad archery info.

I watched Am Sportsmen also – about the only Hunting [ sometimes] TV –haha — how times change
I imagine Fred shot everything [at one time or another]Bear Archery made.I always think of him with a Recurve usually a Super Kodiak. The reason I eventually got one [ still have it]

Thanks – It would be interesting to see what Fred actually used. My older books are all put away in storage. The two I have at hand are not very descriptive { equipment details}.

in the same book there is a quote from a true magazine art —
“Rifleman use big artillery to bring down a 4 ton elephant, but a man named Fred Bear said he would do it with a bow and a 2ounce arrow”
haha – now I am really confused–

in reply to: Thought you guys might like this #35662the problem with a lot of the older books – is they do not go into much detail —
the following is from Dick Latimer’s book “Hunt with Fred Bear” some of it is quoted and some not but it is written in a confusing way — as follows
The ARROW* that downed 4 tons of Elephant was a STANDARD* four blade broadhead, but weighed almost 2 ounces, about 75 % more than usual for {Fred got extra weight and stiffness by glueing a aluminum shaft inside one of fiberglass]The arrow with a draw of 28″inches penetrated 22inches of the bull’s liver and was retrieved intact.
this is the last book I read [ and was in my head]
* arrow – BH which one?
Is this similiar to your books rendition –I am just curious now?

sorry did not mean to seem argumentative { my original comment was just on the weight measurement [ got confused ] — I am sure it is whatever you said, I could not remember. sounds like a heck of an arrow – maybe Ol Fred made the first version of the king Kong/Godzilla/Fronkenstein! haha

in reply to: Thought you guys might like this #35588I have read a couple books on Fred and his elephant hunt don’t recall what the arrow weight was,[ if given]but I thought he shot his std Bear Razorhead which is aprox 150gr with insert [still have the last variation in the package]
but don’t know for sure —

in reply to: Thought you guys might like this #35565handirifle beat me to it — 2 ounces is 874 grains
my guess is a typo -might be entire weight of arrow?

I just got a new phone, need to try out it’s camera!? Yours surely works very well! I normally carry a small pocket Canon. might not need to carry both, if my phone/camera takes as good pix as yours.
The Ultraday has the same suspension { looking at both in the store} and almost the same capacity – just more pockets and straps on the outside – which suits my style.
thanks for the showing off your backyard -haha

Beautiful day on the montain –very clear pix– What camera did you use?
Guys, I use a Badlands Ultraday
[because of the suspension system] that model has the straps across the back for clothing, that I particularly like [and wanted]. Great day pack.

Don’t you wonder how many times they have seen you? vs the couple of times you’ve seen them —–
Mountain Lions – the ultimate still hunter, even in Dave’s camera pix the cat is using cover – how does it know? –haha

in reply to: Wisconsin deer politics #28687Now I have heard it all –to echo Wildschwein – public lands a form of Communism! wow –
The older I get the less I like any politician [ irregardless of party] I am afraid I end up voting for the ” lesser evil” any more.
I feel for wisconsinites, and the rest of us better stay on guard!

in reply to: "The Grey" #28134I see most of my movies on DVD —
I remembered the comments on this thread so watched “The Grey”
the other day much to my regret [ all the trad bow reviews were correct] horrid film.
But
I also picked up a Korean film titled “War of the Arrows”
Basically a period piece action adventure, with a lot of { Recurve }archery in it, with a well done “archery duel” in the last third. Don’t get me wrong it’s “Hollywood”. but no more so than Most of the “Robin Hood” pixs which I also enjoyed — after all — they are just Moving Pictures—

I will buy some of the heavier heads as soon as they are available.
I think it is great, that a Tradional Bowhunting Icon [imho]is returning to the field —
