I totally agree with Dave [I do not have a smidgen of his literary knowledge or skills- but I read A LOT! haha] , and also recommend these 2 books – I read Dersu a long time ago [saw the movie in a college art theatre]excellent.

I found the Tiger very interesting! – the part about Russia’s “Wilderness Areas” set up by the Czar and still around thru all Russia’s turmoil to the present, very intriquing. Full of good info on the Land/people/nature in an exotic part of the world, all wrapped up in a Modern “Man Eating Tiger hunt” story!

          Tombow –

Yes I shoot a similar FP target and find the rear tapered FPs from 3Rs work best [Boat tailed Field pt] I hold near the hit and pull.

                Tombow-JP

I use a black Layered foam tgt that is narrow in the shooting center[the block]and less expensive than some. My arrows are trapped by it, but the heads protrude so I can unscrew them if of the type too difficult to pull back thru. There is a field point{3Rs} for Carbons that is tappered on the back as well as the front for easier removal.

Carbon collars work well in my stump/small game arrows to help keep them from splitting. When I miss in hard ground or hit fire hardened/dry stumps here in the SW.

                  Goosh –

                  “What Archer38 said”

Younger pigs are hard to tell apart in field situations, especially when you start out. No worry’s, anything under a 100lbs is great eating. Just less meat per successful shot.

Mature feral pigs [if they have been wild for a couple+ generations start looking very Russian Boar like / Dark/ long/mean looking]females the “teats” are more pronounced [and they are rounder from stem to stern],if lactating very pronounced and you’ll probably see piglets.I don’t take these, as I want pigs for future hunting –although this aggravates a lot of people who want them eliminated. Probably rightly so in some areas to keep the ecosystem in it’s original format. Big Boars [breeding age]are obvious; they are very heavy in the front[shoulders]usually larger head,a “sheath” you can spot from the side {unless in tall grass/brush}. Have tusks you can easily see! and they know how to use em!

                    Big Dave –

I figured that was the case,as I know you don’t hunt them [and I have not in some time].

That is the reason I rarely eat Game, I did not shoot or –most important– Take care of myself. A lot of hunters do not do it well IMHO.

                      Goosh –

                      Your welcome–

The Bison Book is one of the best books on the subject and a great pers hunting story sandwiched in.

When you go after feral pigs, and want great eating. Shoot a young Sow [dry]75-100lb best eating. Don’t shoot a big boar. You can still eat em, and I have — but it is a lot of extra work, and your family won’t join you as easy for Pork supper.

                              King-

sorry to get off track —

I like your CBH determination of subspecie —

I used to hunt BTails at ft Hunter Ligget and the Ventana Wilderness and those{your’s} are very nice, especially for that part of the coast! well done.Drew an X hunt once also.

I stay as clean and sent free as possible without very much in the way of “store Bought” scent products. Working the wind is uppermost in my mind for successful hunting.I also believe that scent will “pool” if waiting in ambush in a dead wind Condition [have seen this occur, mostly from ground blinds].

How the animals respond to levels of scent is also a matter of their current “alert status” IE Elk hanging out in town IMHO.
