Check out Rocky Mountain Specialty gear – they have a large selection of new and used traditional bows. Check out the archery events search and the club’s listed on this site – look for or ask about shoots/ events that show bowyers attending ie a vendors row.

in reply to: Broadhead sharpening ????? #144367Richard
I pretty much do what Steve mentioned. My tendency is to make them razor sharp and keep them that way – but carry and use will cause resharpening issues, especially In the field. I use a bow Quiver, so my broadheads stay sharp a little longer. I also carry a a file and stone for touch up on me ( like papa bear), and a complete sharpening kit in camp.
I have and use a lot of different broadheads, but I like tuffheads mostly anymore, especially on Big game. Although I have used zwickeys on Javelina and they worked fine.

in reply to: Brand new to Traditional Archery #144255Hi Adam
Welcome to the forum, sounds like you are jumping right in . I think getting a good inexpensive starter bow is the way to go . If you have any tradbow shops within reach or a local bowyer, I would go visit and try out some of the bows available. If there is an archery club in the area with tradbow folks, you can attend and handle/shoot some bows to see what you might prefer.
Let us know how it goes , always happy to chat about traditional archery here
Picking up a copy of the Traditional Bowhunters Handbook by TJ Conrads is also a good idea – loaded with tradbow info. Since you are interested in making your own longbow, I would also recommend The American Longbow by our own Stephen Graf.

I use to hunt with a flintlock myself – still primitive hunting – glad you got some winters meat.

What Stephen said—
It is mostly personal preference —
When I started the majority of archers went left wing , ie it was most common ( I think because this is what most shops / Co. sold feathers and fetching gear wise) . Probably still that way. This thread gives the arguments pro and con. I still shoot left wing, not because i think it is better, its how i started. Too lazy to change, and I try to keep my tradbow stuff simple.

Ditto what smiley1 said – I think 400spine is probably too stiff for your bow with 145grs up front .

Amazing and interesting story. I am glad your friend was able to recover the deer.
Just proves one should always investigate every shot , just to be sure. Great lesson, and an excellent reminder.

Haha –never tried the bottles with pressurized air as tgts. After your experiments i think if i do, I will fill them with only 40 psi or less — balloons may be the way to go for most of us, to stay within safety parameters .

in reply to: Longbow vs Recurve #143011Ronald
I own and shoot longbows, recurves and R/D (my current go to bows )- love them all. I have always thought the longbow a little more difficult to learn to shoot than the recurve, with R/D somewhere in the middle. I have found tuning to be easy or difficult dependent on the individual bow, rather than type. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I have always thought recurves to be more exotic / artistic in their design style variations – imho.

in reply to: More on "how to carry a deer." #142919Nowadays i am ( like David) in the cut em up and pack out my game in parts mode myself . Especially if i am having to haul it any distance . Although this might be real handy for small deer in grizzly country —

I enjoyed the article also. Good reminder of striving to be ” in the moment”, focus, ” the concept of “empty mind” ( mushin) — especially helpful while bowhunting —
