in reply to: Rattlesnake skin camouflage… #13415
The cottonmouths here in SwampEast, MO are very aggressive and will try to get a boat with you. Copperheads also have a beautiful piece of camouflage, I don’t think it’s as good as the rattler, but it’s good.
The summer between my 11th and 12th grade, I not only got bit once by a copperhead, but twice that summer, different snakes. We lived down a long driveway and one early evening I went walking to the mailbox, barefooted and stepped on a copperhead, he hit me in the top of the left foot…not a good strike, but he got one fang through the skin…my dad drove me to the hospital, after about 5 hours the doc sent me home, my foot was swolled but not life threatening. About a month later, I was kicking down a gravel road in Jesus boots (leather sandals) and I stepped on another copperhead, he got me better that time…I spent the night and was fairly sick, but no lasting damage. The doc told me to start wearing boots.

in reply to: is the new Traditional Bowhunter mag out yet? #12379It came today, I still haven’t read it yet, due to my brother being over here. And that was an interesting conversation as I was scanning the new magazine while he played with his cellphone..he said, “You always liked those bows, I never did.” and I (being the typical big brother) said, “Thats because you never could hit anything with yours….”:D
The new magazine looks like it has some good articles, as usual.
in reply to: is the new Traditional Bowhunter mag out yet? #11824I’m sure it will get here…I’m just anxious.
BTW, the wife and I used the recipe for turkey legs in one of the issues and it was great…

in reply to: Working on my inner gadfly.. #36315Our Conservation Department is funded entirely by a small sales tax on (1/8 of 1%) on sporting goods. They are relatively free of the influence of politicians, however, there is a fairly vocal group of pols in Jefferson City who don’t like it. I voted for 3 of these men and I’ve told everyone of them to leave MODoC alone…they’ve done a fairly good job so far.
The funny thing about that sales tax is it has allowed the state to buy land for hiking, etc,,that us hunters can’t hunt on, something I remind folks of when they go off about hunting poor innocent animals.
in reply to: Bear hair rest won't stay on bow.. #34165A local hardware store had Barge cement, so I bought it there and it is currently holding the bear hair down, with some assist from some duct tape and I’ll shoot tomorrow..Hopefully it works..

in reply to: Using pecan for a selfbow? #22564I stripped the bark already and have it in a barn on the rafters. Maybe I should put it in the garage.
I found my draw knives. There is supposed to be a bowyer in our area putting on a demonstration of techniques this fall. I plan to attend to see how much I don’t know. Which is probably considerable.
Yew is not native to our area. Too bad, I always wanted a yew bow just like Robin Hoods.
