in reply to: Traditional Bow shops, Columbia/Jeff city MO? #15362
Must have hit the button twice…BTW, did ya’ll know that our capital is one of only a few in the country that is not served by an interstate highway? You cannot get there from the Bootheel.
in reply to: Traditional Bow shops, Columbia/Jeff city MO? #15361While I was there I went to a couple of nontraditional shops and asked…they didn’t know of any and they are locals…oh well…
in reply to: What is it's proper name? #34394Thanks everyone, those websites are perfect..thank you again.
in reply to: Nature is so entertaining…. #18833I grew up in Memphis next to Elmwood Cemetery. Many of my ancestors are buried there. My cousins and I played in that cemetery all the time, we were always reverent around the graves, but it’s really like big park in many respects.
We moved to the Ozarks in 1965 and I’m so glad we did. I took right to the woods and the rivers..
in reply to: The new magazine got here yesterday… #16559Well, I do like I did in college, w/o the beer. I skim it real good, then go back and re-read each article. Then a few days later I go back and do it again…
The article about the gentleman who likes to hunt in a kilt was interesting…they must not have chiggers up there…
However it inspired me to hunt in my green Glengarry this year….
in reply to: Noteable Quotes! #39112“Souls are like athletes, that need opponents worthy of them, if they are to be tried and extended and pushed to the full use of their powers, and rewarded according to their capacity.”

in reply to: Mitten's article in the current TBM #7763I can see Mr. Mitten’s points. I’ve found myself many times just enjoying being in the woods. I’m hunting, but I’m taking in the day.
When I was younger I would pretty much take anything that crossed my path, but as I’m older, I’m more selective, partially because I want to be sure it will be a good kill shot, partially because something better may come along.
in reply to: Stone Arrowheads #52117A local archeologist for Mizzou looked at both points. He said the green flint came from Eastern Kansas, the knife blade was very old, much older than the spear point.
Collections I’ve seen around here have lots of those knife blades. Arrowheads are far more common than the spear points.
We also have what we think may have been a bowl for mixing things. It’s a soft kind of rock and is hollowed out in the middle to the depth of maybe 2 inches. It’s obvious that someone hollowed it out. For what reason, who knows? I’m curious why someone would leave something that obviously took a lot of time and effort to make..My oldest son found that bowl in a steam in the higher Ozarks west of here.
Don’t ya wish you could step back in time and see the people who built and used these artifacts..?
in reply to: Stone Arrowheads #47591Down here where the Ozarks run into the Mississippi Delta we find them all the time. The Osage, Chickasaw and other tribes often camped on the slopes of the hills and trapped and netted fish in the numerous rivers in our area. A freshly plowed field near these little streams is a bonanza. My oldest son found a beautiful flint knife in our backyard while digging under an old stump, years later Our youngest son found a green flint spear point near the same spot. We find small arrowheads quite often near the Black River.
The Mississippian Culture centered near Cahokia, IL left items everywhere.
in reply to: Mass produced hickory longbows? #31451That does in fact look a lot like those bows….I’ve seen movies from the WWII era of the machine used at the Springfield Armory to make rifle stocks…very impressive. I just wondered how many hickory bows were made that way before fiberglass became as common…
in reply to: Let me introduce myself #60564I grew up in Doniphan and Van Buren on the Current River. Welcome, this is my favorite place on the net…
in reply to: Let me introduce myself #60556Welcome. Where ya from in Missouri? I’m down here in the Southern Ozarks.
in reply to: I'm back…. #52854I’m a Memphian by birth….but I just can’t stand large cities, so I live up here in the Ozarks….BTW, Memphian means we know next to nothing about the rest of Tennessee but we can tell you all about North Mississippi and Northeast Arkansas…You’re right, Ernie was lucky that I took my son home, otherwise Travis may not have noticed him…my son’s driveway is about 100 yards long, gravel and since he lives in the flat country east of Poplar Bluff, it’s muddy…I won’t live in the flatland…
in reply to: Shooting the Sage #52843I have a 45# Samick Sage and I have to concur with you, it’s a great bow. I ordered a Flemish string for mine and I shoot some wood arrows I got from RMS Gear…it draws smooth.
in reply to: Rattlesnake skin camouflage… #15715My experiences with pit vipers has made me almost paranoid about them…I am really careful now what I wear outside and where I walk.
I almost died of a case of the willies one afternoon many years ago. I was running a water line under our new house and it was very tight under the kitchen. My wife was in the crawlspace opening shining the flashlight so I could use both hands..all of a sudden, it seemed like hundreds of baby mice swarmed over me when I crawled up on their nest….I just about killed myself getting out from under there…she was laughing and said, “Well, there’s no snakes under there or we wouldn’t have the mice.” Not a word of sympathy mind you. 🙁
